Rewards are only available for players who are at least Honor Rank 2. Riot will begin distributing rewards through the mission system on Nov. 15, 2022, and all rewards should be available by Dec. 14, 2022, at the latest.

Anyone who reached gold rank in solo, duo, or flex will automatically receive the Victorious Sejuani skin, even if they don’t have the champion.

High School Esports Rankings: Most ‘League of Legends’ wins of all time

The high school esports teams with the most League of Legends wins since 2019

League of Legends, the battle arena game that pits teams against each other in a strategy-based test of takeover and Nexus destruction, has been a significant part of PlayVS‘ high school esports record book since the online platform’s inception.

Like Rocket League, high school esports teams have squared off in Legends matchups for seven seasons so far, with a few programs rising to the top as the best in the country—all of which are officially recognized by the NFHS Network and state associations.

Until then, here’s a look at the 25 all-time winningest League of Legends teams, according to PlayVS’ official stats.

High School Esports Rankings: Top teams since 2019

The top esports teams in the country since 2019, according to PlayVS

Ahead of the Fall 2022 high school esports rankings, USA TODAY High School Sports is looking back at the best esports teams since 2019 based on overall data tallied by PlayVS.

With games such as Madden NFLRocket League and League of Legends, PlayVS has grown to include high school students across the country, providing opportunities to be part of a team environment and even presenting the possibility of scholarships at the college level.

The esports platform is also recognized by the NFHS and state associations, with individual states able to crown a new official champion every season (fall and spring).

That official distinction includes tracking stats for the high school esports leagues, too, which helps highlight the best programs of all time.

Q&A with esports scholarship athlete Darlene Pineda

The growing popularity of esports has not been confined to just one gender. Meet an esports athlete who is making the most of it.

As we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the passage of Title IX, we can reflect on how the legislation has helped promote equality and change in sports at all levels. The impacts are continued to be felt, both in traditional sports and new.

The growing popularity of esports has not been confined to just one gender. There are scholarship opportunities for all in this rising sport.

Darlene Pineda is one woman in the most recent graduating class to receive a scholarship to play esports at the next level.

The Portales (N.M) High School alumnae will play League of Legends at New Mexico State University, with the goal of broadening her scope and playing more games, if the opportunity presents itself.

For there are countless opportunities now for people to play esports competitively and monetize their talents. Livestream tech such as YouTube, Instagram and Twitch have allowed people to play games with audiences tuning in for the competition.

PlayVS is part of the efforts to arrange these games into varsity-level, competitive, organized sports. Their mission, which helps students like Pineda get scholarships at the collegiate level, has outcomes that make high school sports all the more interesting.

Pineda shared her story in an email interview exchange with USA High School Sports. The following is the transcript of the conversation:

Q: When you started playing esports as a sophomore, did you ever think that you’d be able to get a college scholarship for playing?

Darlene: When I started playing esports as a sophomore, I remembered my coach telling me that there were people out there handing out scholarships for playing. With that, I kept it in my mind and played as much as I could so I could get better and be recognized for a scholarship. I definitely had some doubts that I wasn’t good enough for anyone to ever recognize me, but our head director of our esports program had definitely helped us get to that point.

Q: Over the last few years, how have you seen high school esports progress and grow?

Darlene: In my small town, when we first started not that many people joined; I would say about 15 people joined. Now, there’s so much more people joining and people who are committing. I volunteered at the esports camp at the high school this summer and taught new members joining about the game I played and told them about the scholarship I was getting. With my friends and I getting scholarships to play video games for a college, I feel that it has opened more opportunities for those who love playing video games to get into a college and play for them.

Q: What is your greatest memory/moment from your time playing in high school?

Darlene: My greatest memory from my time playing in high school would probably be finding out about us getting scholarships to play esports. It was our very last time playing for our high school and we wouldn’t have thought about getting signed into college esports. I thought I would have to go to college and try to get into the program the hard way, and it scared me because I always doubt myself and always think I would never be good enough to get into any of that. I’m also shy and quiet and it would have been really hard for me to find my way in.

Q: As a kid, what video games did you play and how did these moments contribute to your high school career?

Darlene: When I was a kid, I played almost everything. I had a Nintendo DS, PSP, a Wii, a PS2 and Xbox 360 I shared with my brother, a PS4, and now a PC. I played games from Pokemon to GTA to COD and Modern Warfare games. I used video games as an escape from everything that was going on. I’m glad I never got tired of playing video games, because I got a big opportunity from doing something I loved doing.

Q: How did playing esports in high school helped shape you as a person and your growth into your next chapter?

Darlene: Video games, for me, were almost another world I lived in. It was another way to let out my creativity and keep my inner child. Who wouldn’t love playing video games as part of their career? I hope to continue playing and making more memories by doing something I love as a part of the next chapter in my life.

Q: Why did you choose to play League of Legends? What other games do you hope to be able to play in college?

Darlene: I chose League of Legends because I had already been playing it beforehand and my school didn’t offer any other games at the time besides Rocket League and Smite, which many people were already playing and no one really played League of Legends. In college, I hope to play Valorant, Rainbow Six Siege and Call of Duty along with playing League of Legends, even though I probably won’t get on those teams.

Q: How do you foresee the high school esports landscape changing in five years?

Darlene: I see high school esports encouraging kids to keep doing what they love and prove that playing video games is more than just sitting in front of a screen with pretty colors.

Meet Bel’Veth, the void empress coming to League of Legends

A stunning cinematic trailer introduces the latest champion.

Riot has been teasing that an evil, all-powerful force will arrive in League of Legends soon. At long last, we get to meet the big bad.

Empress Bel’Veth is officially the latest champion in League of Legends. The so-called “God of Oblivion” hails from Runeterra’s void, where she rules with the cruelest fist. Like an even meaner (and more purple) version of Maleficent.

Sadly, there’s no information on Bel’Veth’s abilities or skills yet. However, Riot will undoubtedly reveal her kit soon enough, as Bel’Veth will release on June 9, 2022.

Coinciding with the unveiling of Bel’Veth is All That Will Ever Be, the latest cinematic teaser for League of Legends. Check it out for yourself below.

There’s certainly an eldritch vibe in this trailer. Or, at the very least, much less upbeat than other League of Legends cinematics. Not that you’d expect much else from the arrival of an otherworldly malevolent goddess, right? Maybe she just needs a hug.

If you’re just getting into League of Legends, GLHF recently broke down the best champions for beginners.

The next League of Legends champion gets two bizarre teasers

Someone is slithering out of the void.

Riot often does flashy, extravagant trailers whenever another League of Legends champion is about to come out. This time, though, the details are far more mysterious.

On Tuesday, two teasers went up on the official League of Legends YouTube channel. The videos titled “To the Eye of the void” and “To the Prophet of the Void” address existing void champions Vel’Koz and Malzahar, respectively (Thanks, Dot Esports). A disembodied voice narrates each, suggesting that end-times are coming to Runeterra. Most fans believe this is the queen of the void speaking, and we’ll learn her true identity soon — May 20, 2022, at 12:00 P.M. PDT // 3:00 P.M. EDT // 7:00 P.M. GMT if the video description is any indication.

Curiously, fans also noticed that the champion page for Kai’Sa recently changed. Specifically, the character artwork now contains some sort of tendrils that weren’t there before. Check out the comparison screenshots below to see what I mean.

Kind of spooky, isn’t it? Her left eye now matches one seen in both teasers too.

Kai’Sa is known as the “daughter of the void,” the next champion is likely her mother. At least, that’s what everyone is assuming. We’ll surely find out what’s going on rather soon.

League of Legends team forced to replay matches they won after technical fault

In a post, Riot explained that the consistent 35 ping from Shanghai was meant to be matched in Busan for teams playing against RNG. Unfortunately, the emulation of this ping level in Busan was not consistent, leading to teams having variable ping against RNG.

The League of Legends Mid-Season Invitational is ongoing this week as teams from around the world compete to be the best. It’s not as prestigious as the World Championship at the end of each season, but it’s still a serious tournament which sees all the best teams competing. It’s an odd one this year as the games take place in Busan, South Korea, the international English broadcast happens from Germany, and the Chinese team, Royal Never Give Up, play from Shanghai.

That’s all down to COVID, with restrictions in China being heavy enough that were the team to travel to Korea, they wouldn’t be able to get back into the country and be ready to play in time for the next split of competition post-MSI. It means that various technologies have been implemented by Riot so that RNG can compete on a fair playing field with those in Busan.

Unfortunately, it didn’t work. In a post, Riot explained that the consistent 35 ping from Shanghai was meant to be matched in Busan for teams playing against RNG. Unfortunately, the emulation of this ping level in Busan was not consistent, leading to teams having variable ping against RNG. This was determined to be unfair, and the games are now being replayed. RNG originally won all three, and look set to do so again.

Responses have been varied. Most neutral fans believe it is the only fair thing to do, and gave props to Riot for admitting their mistake and fixing it the best way they can. RNG and their fans, on the other hand, are less impressed. Rough translations are available on the League subreddit – fans say RNG should quit the tournament, and their manager is annoyed about all the additional effort they’re having to go to.

The MSI group stage is due to end on Sunday, and so far the tournament hasn’t had any big surprises – teams from major, large regions have beaten those from smaller, less skilled regions almost universally. It’s likely that NA, Korean, Chinese, and European teams will all advance, alongside PSG Talon from the Pacific Region (South-East Asian countries not already included above) and Vietnamese Saigon Buffalo. Favorites remain T1 from South Korea, who have so far lost all of eight games and zero matches this entire year.

There’s ‘no guarantee’ the League of Legends MMORPG will come out, says dev

Executive Producer Greg Street is optimistic, but nothing is for sure.

The League of Legends MMORPG may not ever come out, according to executive producer Greg Street. However, development is going well for the time being.

As first spotted by MassivelyOP, Street spoke plainly about the status of the League of Legends MMORPG on Saturday, which has yet to receive any reliable information since its loose announcement in 2020.

“There is no guarantee this game will ship,” Street said on Twitter. “We are optimistic, but you just never know until it does. However, assuming it does, this will be the fourth major franchise I have worked on, and likely the last.”

Despite the somewhat ominous tone in Street’s message, he clarified that the project isn’t in trouble.

“Things are going super well. I am just being honest that Riot’s game standards are high, and so are the expectations of players,” Street explains on Twitter. “We won’t ship a disappointing game.”

Street also claims that Riot doesn’t want the League of Legends MMORPG to be something that disappoints and disappears from everyone’s rear-view mirror shortly after launch. So in that context, his proclamation is far less dire.

Whatever the case might be, Riot likely won’t show the game off until everything is up to its standards. There’s no shortage of fantastic MMORPGs, especially with another World of Warcraft expansion looming and Final Fantasy 14: Endwalker being a massive success.
