Wisconsin among winningest college football programs without national championship

Wisconsin among most wins of any college football program without national championship

The Wisconsin football program has been the model of consistent success over the last few decades.

The program has qualified for 22 consecutive bowl games, the third-longest active streak behind only Georgia and Oklahoma. It has experienced only two losing seasons (2001, 1995) since Barry Alvarez’s initial breakthrough in 1993.

Wisconsin has achieved that consistent success with a few peak seasons including a 12-1 mark in 2006, 11-2 in 2010, 11-3 in 2011 and 13-1 in 2017. But none of those breakthrough years have included a College Football Playoff appearance.

The Badgers have been either good or really-good in nearly every season over the last 30 years. The program has not, however, had a truly ‘great’ season. It has been unable to reach national title contention.

That leads us into a look at the context surrounding Wisconsin’s steady success but lack of top-end breakthrough. The Badgers are toward the top of the list of FBS programs with the most all-time wins without a claimed national championship (all win numbers via Wikipedia):

Wisconsin hockey great Joe Pavelski enters the final round of the 2024 American Century Championship in second place, trailing former professional tennis player Mardy Fish.

The golf tournament is held on the south course at the Edgewood Tahoe Resort in Lake Tahoe. It includes a star-studded field of current and former athletes, musical artists, actors and more.

Pavelsi enters Sunday’s final round with 50 points in the modified Stableford scoring format. Instead of scoring in relation to par, this format rewards 10 points for an albatross, eight points for a hole-in-one, six points for an eagle, three for a birdie, one for a par, zero for a bogey and -2 for a double bogey or worse.

He trails Fish’s 57 points and leads NFL wide receiver Adam Thielen (45 points), former MLB pitchers Derek Lowe (42) and Mark Mulder (42), LPGA legend Annika Sorenstam (41) and NBA legend Ray Allen (38).

Pavelski is currently a free agent after playing the last six years with the Dallas Stars. He has played in the NHL since 2006 after spending two seasons at Wisconsin. The veteran, who leads the NHL in all-time playoff goals by an American-born player, did recently announce that he does not intend to play this upcoming season — though did not use the word ‘retire.’

He will look to chase down Fish when the leaders tee off on Sunday.

Wisconsin football’s all-time leading receivers

How many can you name?

The Wisconsin football program, believe it or not, is not commonly known for its production of wide receivers.

Tight ends are a different story. Wisconsin has sent Jake Ferguson, Troy Fumagalli, Owen Daniels, Travis Beckum and others on to the NFL level.

But Wisconsin is traditionally known for running the football and stopping the run, not necessarily for its high-level passing attack. That may change shortly with Phil Longo running the offense. But as of now, the Badgers are not a wide-receiver factory.

Still, there are some recent updates to the program’s all-time receiving yard leaderboard.

If you missed it, here is our updated list of Wisconsin’s all-time leading rushers and passers.

Now, Wisconsin’s all-time leaders in receiving yards:

Former Badger T.J. Watt joins J.J. Watt and Reggie White on an all-time leaderboard

Former Badger T.J. Watt joins J.J. Watt and Reggie White on an all-time leaderboard:

Former Wisconsin Badger T.J. Watt is up to his usual tricks today against the Green Bay Packers. The perennial NFL All-Pro has five tackles, one tackle-for-loss, one sack and two quarterback hits…at halftime.

His sack today was No. 88 in his career, that tally coming only 100 games into his NFL career. With the sack, he passed his brother J.J. Watt, who had 87.5 sacks in his first 100 games.

The leaderboard now reads:

  1. NFL Hall Of Famer Reggie White: 105 sacks in first 100 games
  2. T.J. Watt: 88
  3. J.J. Watt: 87.5

Chiefs DE Frank Clark can ascend sack leaderboard, hit contract incentive vs. Bengals

#Chiefs DE Frank Clark has $500K, a spot on the all-time playoff sack leaderboard and a trip to the Super Bowl on the line vs. the #Bengals. | from @TheJohnDillon

Frank Clark has been an enigmatic part of the Kansas City Chiefs defense during the regular season but always seems to find an extra gear in the playoffs. He managed to bring down Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence last week in the Chiefs’ first playoff win of the postseason and will need to find his way into the Cincinnati Bengals’ backfield with regularity to lift Kansas City to another Super Bowl berth.

With a sack of Joe Burrow in Sunday’s AFC Championship Game, Clark could improve his position on the NFL’s all-time playoff sack leaderboard. He would pass both Reggie White, who he’s currently tied with, and one-time Chiefs player Terrell Suggs, who has a half-sack advantage over Clark heading into the matchup.

It is also worth noting that Clark has incentives in his contract that would pay him a hefty sum if the Chiefs manage to pull out a win on Sunday. CBS Sports salary cap wizard Joel Corry has the details:

As if the prospect of a Super Bowl berth wasn’t enough reason to play hard, the amount of pride and money on the line should provide Clark plenty of motivation to be a game-wrecker on Kansas City’s defensive line. Against a Bengals offense whose only weakness is their ailing offensive front, the veteran pass rusher seems primed to do something special.

Jaire Alexander tied for fourth place in NFL for interceptions ahead of Week 15 matchup vs. Rams

Alexander will look to climb the NFL’s interceptions leaderboard with a big game against the #Rams in Week 15

Jaire Alexander has had a phenomenal 2022 season in the Green Bay Packers secondary and is looking to add to his list of achievements with a big game against the Los Angeles Rams in Week 15. He is currently tied for fourth place on the NFL’s list of players with the most interceptions this season and could climb higher with a few more picks before the season comes to a close.

Matched up against the Rams’ struggling offense, Alexander will have to compete against the likes of wide receivers Cooper Kupp and Van Jefferson to ensure that Green Bay maintains an edge over Los Angeles’ air attack. The 5-8 Packers cannot afford to let quarterback Baker Mayfield keep this game within striking distance after he orchestrated an outstanding comeback against the Las Vegas Raiders last week.

Though Alexander will have his work cut out for him against the defending Super Bowl champions, it isn’t out of the question that he could make an outsized impact on the final outcome of this crucial tilt. Los Angeles has struggled to move the ball on the ground all season, and will likely resort to a pass-first strategy as they pursue their fifth win of the year.

Green Bay is sure to be hard at work studying the Rams’ offensive tendencies and readying themselves for the challenge of playing an exceptionally well-coached team that will never be an easy out on Sunday. Even without Matthew Stafford, Los Angeles has shown grit and tenacity in 2022 that any team or fanbase would be envious of, and the Packers would be wise to not overlook their opponent, despite their losing record.

If last week’s comeback win by the Rams was any indication, Green Bay is in for an exceptionally demanding game that should give Alexander plenty of chances to make a difference on the outcome.

Jalen Pitre climbing Texans’ rookie interceptions leaderboard

With his interception against the #Browns, Pitre took over third place on the #Texans’ all-time rookie interceptions leaderboard

Safety Jalen Pitre has been among the Houston Texans’ most valuable contributors on defense and is climbing the team leaderboard for most interceptions in a rookie season after picking off the Cleveland Browns quarterback on Sunday. He is currently in third place on the list and marked the third interception of the season with the exceptional play against Cleveland.

It is also worth noting that he managed to get involved in 16 total tackles in the matchup, which made him the first Texans rookie to break the 15-tackle threshold since Demeco Ryans in 2006. This feat is an example of the exceptional abilities that Pitre brings to the table for Houston, and is an indication that he will continue to improve his game as he matures in the Texans’ defensive system.

Head coach Lovie Smith would be wise to feature Pitre in his game plans, and once fellow rookie Derek Stingley Jr. returns from injury, the team’s secondary should be a force to be reckoned with through the end of the season. Houston will still look to add talent wherever possible in the coming offseason but has a solid group of young defensive backs to buoy the defense and provide continuity on the roster through the Texans’ rebuild in 2023.

Once the team secures the services of a capable quarterback, whether through free agency or the draft, they’ll be able to leverage the young talent they’ve assembled on defense to compete for relevance in the loaded AFC. Pitre will look to play a key part in bringing the Texans back from the dead next season and should be expected to continue building on his strong 2022 campaign to turn heads around the league.

If he can, Houston may become a premier destination for free agents who want to have a hand in helping a team come back from the brink of total collapse.

Notre Dame’s unofficial record holder at The Masters

You may not think of Notre Dame as a golf powerhouse but a former Irish golfer is an unofficial record holder at The Masters.

Usually The Masters is reserved for April when spring is upon us and warmer weather is right around the corner.

But because of the COVID-19 pandemic we saw the world’s most famous golf tournament moved to the second weekend of November in a year none of us will quickly forget.

With it being Masters weekend, why not take a minute to learn a bit more about Notre Dame’s holder of multiple records at the famed tournament?

Notre Dame may not have Tiger Woods or Dustin Johnson in their golf record books, but but they do have 1970 Masters Champion, Billy Casper.

Casper was one of the best golfers in the world as he won 51 times on the PGA Tour, the seventh most of any golfer ever.Β  27 of those victories came between 1964 and 1970 which were two more than Jack Nicklaus during that time and six more than Arnold Palmer and Gary Player combined to win in that window.

Casper was also a short-lived Notre Dame athlete, attending the University for one semester on a golf scholarship.Β  He chose to leave college and pursue a career as a professional golfer and as you know by now, that certainly was a wise choice by him.

Casper won that 1970 Masters in a playoff over Gene Littler which led to his record performance at Augusta 35 years later.

How so?

Remember with The Masters, when you win you get a lifelong invitation to keep playing in the tournament regardless of your age of skill-set, even if some are encouraged to stop doing so on occasion.

Casper continued to play in the tournament up until 2005 when he played his final round of competitive golf at Augusta.

Let’s just say Casper was more than a little bit past his prime.

Related:Β  Current leaderboard at The Masters 2020

You won’t find it in any record book because he never actually turned in his first round scorecard in 2005, but Casper shot what would be a record-high for a single round at The Masters with a first round score of 106.

His scorecard that round read as follows:
6-5-5-5-6-5-5-6-6-7-7-3-6-4-6-14-5-5=106

If you’re familiar with Augusta you’re aware that the 16th hole is a par 3 and you’ll notice his 14 on that hole alone and as you could probably guess, had it been an official round Casper would also hold the record for the highest score on a single hole.Β  Since it wasn’t three other golfers are tied for the record high by scoring a 13 on various holes over the years.

Casper never turned in his scorecard on that April afternoon back in 2005 so you won’t find his score recorded in any official Masters record book.

Now who said Notre Dame didn’t have a rich history in golf that’s worthy of celebration?

Remember that when you’re watching the next champion get handed the green jacket on Sunday afternoon.
