Late Weah assist sends Juventus to Coppa Italia final at Lazio’s expense

Weah’s 2023-24 hasn’t been ideal, but the USMNT winger helped Juventus advance to a cup final

Juventus is going through to the Coppa Italia final, and they have Tim Weah to thank for the opportunity.

The U.S. men’s national team winger came off the bench to produce a late assist on Arkadiusz Milik’s 83rd minute goal, which was just enough to get Juve past Lazio 3-2 on aggregate.

A 2-0 first-leg win earlier this month had set Juve up well, but Valentín Castellanos’ brace on Tuesday had levelled the tie at the Stadio Olimpico.

However, Massimiliano Allegri’s substitutions proved critical. Weah’s entry in the 70th minute was key, with the USMNT man fizzing a low cross in for Milik, who finished off a tap-in with what was his first touch.

Lazio would push for a late equalizer, but Juve held strong, clinching a place in May 15’s one-off final. That match will be held at the Stadio Olimpico, with either Fiorentina or Atalanta as Juventus’ opponent. I Viola holds a 1-0 edge after the first leg, with the second leg taking place on Wednesday at the Gewiss Stadium.

The assist may be Weah’s biggest moment of what has been a difficult season with Juventus. After toggling between Weah and Andrea Cambiaso for the starting job at right wingback, Allegri has generally preferred to start the Italian in recent months. Despite appearing in 29 of Juve’s 36 matches this season, Weah has just one goal and two assists.

Juventus confirms McKennie racially abused by Lazio fans

The USMNT midfielder confirmed the incident during Tuesday’s Coppa Italia match

Juventus has said it will “take all necessary measures” after Weston McKennie confirmed he was racially abused by Lazio fans during Tuesday’s Coppa Italia match.

Video emerged on social media showing the American midfielder being targeted as he walked on the side of the pitch following his late substitution in a 2-0 Juventus win.

On Thursday, Juventus released a statement saying McKennie confirmed he had been subject to discriminatory chants from visiting Lazio fans at Allianz Stadium.

“Juventus Football Club takes note of the video circulated on social networks and reported by some media from which the intonation of discriminatory chants emerged coming from the visiting section, and directed at Weston McKennie during his substitution in the Juventus-Lazio semifinal first leg of the Italian Cup, played on April 2,” the statement said.

“Following confirmation of the incident by the player, the club communicates that it has activated all procedures aimed at verifying what happened and will fully cooperate in order to identify the persons responsible and, consequently, take all necessary measures in this regard.”

McKennie assisted Dušan Vlahović during the semifinal first leg, as Juve took a major step toward next month’s final.

The incident involving McKennie is far from the first time Lazio fans have been accused of racism recently. The club was hit with a partial stadium ban in January for racist chants toward Roma’s Romelu Lukaku, while fans brought Lecce’s Samuel Umtiti to tears early last year.

The club also has a recent history of run-ins with USMNT players, as its fans targeted Christian Pulisic with death threats last month after a game in which the American drew red cards from two Lazio players.

McKennie reaches 10 assists as Juventus takes big step toward Coppa Italia final

The USMNT midfielder continued his standout campaign in the cup on Tuesday

Weston McKennie’s incredible season of assists continued on Tuesday, as the Juventus midfielder helped his side take a major step toward the Coppa Italia final.

Juventus defeated Lazio 2-0 in the first leg of the semifinal, with McKennie and Dušan Vlahović teaming up for the all-important second goal midway through the second half.

With Juve already up a goal, McKennie quickly helped the ball on with a one-touch pass for the striker, who carried the ball into the box before cutting onto his left foot and firing a shot into the far corner.

McKennie is tied for second in the Serie A assist chart with seven in league play, and the U.S. national team star has added three more in the Italian cup to reach double figures on the season — easily a career high for the 25-year-old.

Juventus will now take a two-goal advantage into the second leg, which will take place in Rome on April 23. The winner of the tie will face either Atalanta or Fiorentina in the final on May 15.

Pulisic strikes again as Milan beats Lazio 2-0

Pulisic was in top form as the Rossoneri picked up three points in a tough Serie A clash

Christian Pulisic is really embracing la dolce vita.

The U.S. men’s national team star opened the scoring for AC Milan in a 2-0 win over Lazio, capping off a superb performance for himself by striking his side’s opening goal on the half-volley.

After an uneventful first half that was only really punctuated by an injury for Ruben Loftus-Cheek — Yunus Musah entered in the England midfielder’s stead in the 29th minute — Milan began pressing more aggressively, eventually setting the stage for Pulisic to give his side the lead on the hour mark.

With Olivier Giroud occupying multiple defenders amid some slick one-touch passing, Pulisic ghosted in towards the penalty spot to fire Rafael Leão’s clipped cross past Ivan Provedel.

The goal is Pulisic’s third in eight appearances since making a €22 million summer move to Serie A. It also follows up the Hershey, Pa. native’s assist mid-week, when Pulisic set Loftus-Cheek up for Milan’s final goal in a 3-1 victory over Cagliari.

14 minutes after opening the scoring on Saturday, Pulisic set Musah up for what would have been a magical second. Unfortunately for the Rossoneri, Musah’s spinning volley was denied brilliantly by Ivan Provedel. Noah Okafor would end up tacking on a late second to seal the win for Stefano Pioli’s side.

The victory moved Milan top of the Serie A table for a few hours, only for city rivals Inter to vault back ahead with a rout of Salernitana later on Saturday.

“From the first half we put a lot of pressure on them, we pushed hard and the goal was only a matter of time,” Pulisic told DAZN after the match. “We finally scored it, from then on it was a great performance.”

Pulisic added that Milan must “take it one game at a time” to have a shot at staying atop the table by season’s end. “If we do this we have a good chance of winning. Today went well, we’re already thinking about the next game.”

AC Milan vs. Lazio: How to watch Serie A clash

Milan is looking to keep pace in Serie A, while Lazio needs points to turn its season around

Two of Serie A’s best teams from last season meet on Saturday, with AC Milan hosting Lazio at the San Siro.

Both clubs finished their 2022-23 campaigns in the Champions League places in Italy, but have started out this season going in different directions. Milan, having added U.S. men’s national team stars Christian Pulisic and Yunus Musah, will take the field tied for first with city rivals Inter, trailing only on goal difference.

Still, things have not been entirely positive for the Rossoneri. While Stefano Pioli’s side has won its last two matches, there is still a sense of nerviness around the club after a heavy loss to Inter was followed by an aggravating home draw with Newcastle in the Champions League.

Lazio, meanwhile, should be feeling some urgency. The Rome-based club has lost three of its six matches in Serie A this term, and sits a disappointing 12th in the standings. Goals have been hard to come by: Lazio has just seven goals in the league this season.

Here is everything you need to know to watch Milan battle Lazio.

Lazio goalkeeper Provedel scores stoppage-time equalizer in Champions League like seasoned striker

Provedel looks like the best goalscoring goalkeeper in the Champions League

Are we sure Ivan Provedel is a goalkeeper?

The Lazio man looked for all the world like a natural striker as he came up to score an amazing stoppage-time equalizer for the Roman side in a 1-1 Champions League draw with Atlético Madrid on Tuesday.

The stunning late show earned Lazio a potentially crucial point in Group E, while also denying group favorites Atléti the chance to start running away with things from matchday one.

It was also, you know, a goalkeeper goal, in stoppage time, in the Champions League, so it obviously got people talking. Provedel is the first goalkeeper to score in the Champions League since Vincent Enyeama in 2010, and only the second to score from something other than other than a penalty kick. He joins Sinan Bolat, who did it for Standard Liège in 2009.

Here are the best of the reactions.

Jose Mourinho apparently took out his frustration on some Lazio children

This was some totally normal coach behavior

José Mourinho has had a rough week.

On Tuesday, Mourinho’s Roma side somehow lost to Cremonese, a team that had managed to not win any of its first 23 Serie A matches this season.

Mourinho was red carded in that game, after which he threatened to take legal action against the fourth official.

In another example of totally normal coach behavior, it has now emerged that two days prior to that Cremonese defeat, Mourinho engaged in some questionable behavior during Roma’s U-14 derby match against Lazio.

Did Mourinho sit and politely cheer on his club’s squad of barely-teens? You probably know the answer to that already.

According to Il Messaggero, Mourinho jeered Lazio’s Alexandru Milou from the stands when he was taking a penalty. Late in the match, he encouraged Roma players to throw themselves to the ground and feign cramps when they were up by a goal.

The coach’s behavior drew a sharp rebuke from Lazio coach Tobia Assumma, who reportedly told him: “That’s not how you coach.”

Roma would go on to win the match 2-1, after which the Giallorossi players showed appreciation for their lesson in the dark arts by posing for pictures with the legendary coach.

Lazio goalkeeper Thomas Strakosha really might have allowed the worst own goal ever

Just stunningly bad.

Serie A side Lazio has been a mainstay in the Europa League in recent years, but the 2021 campaign couldn’t have gotten off to a more embarrassing start for The Eagles.

Goalkeeper Thomas Strakosha had the start for Thursday’s Group E opener at Galatasaray in Istanbul, and for much of the match, Strakosha looked poised to have Lazio leave Turkey with a hard-earned point and clean sheet.

That all fell apart in the 66th minute with perhaps the worst own goal you’ll see in high-level European soccer.

About midway through the second half, Olimpiu Vasile Morutan sent an innocent cross into the box with no Galatasaray players around for support. At the very worst, it should have been a conceded corner with Strakosha tapping the ball over the bar. But, uh, that went horribly wrong.
