UFC 283 medical suspensions: 5 main card fighters suffer fractures, receive 6-month terms

UFC 283 wasn’t short on violence and injuries.

The UFC 283 main card wasn’t short on violence as five fighters suffered fractures and received six-month medical suspensions.

Headliners [autotag]Jamahal Hill[/autotag] and [autotag]Glover Teixeira[/autotag], along with [autotag]Lauren Murphy[/autotag] and [autotag]Paul Craig[/autotag], suffered nasal fractures, while co-headliner [autotag]Deiveson Figueiredo[/autotag] suffered an orbital fracture.

MMA Junkie on Monday obtained a list of suspensions from the Comissao Atletica Brasileira de MMA (CABMMA), which oversaw UFC 283 this past Saturday at Jeunesse Arena in Rio de Janeiro.

Hill dominated Teixeira to claim the vacant light heavyweight title by unanimous decision; Figueiredo lost his flyweight title to Brandon Moreno after the bout was stopped following three rounds because of his injury; Murphy lost a lopsided unanimous decision to Jessica Andrade; and Craig lost to Johnny Walker by first-round TKO.

Scroll below to see the medical suspensions handed out to each fighter. It’s important to note that fighters can return to competition sooner than the allotted suspension if they are cleared by a doctor.

Lauren Murphy lauds corner for not stopping fight in loss to Andrade at UFC 283

After a one-sided decision loss to former champion Jessica Andrade at UFC 283, Lauren Murphy said she’s ready to take some time off.

After a one-sided decision loss to former champion Jessica Andrade, [autotag]Lauren Murphy[/autotag] said she’s ready to take some time off.

Murphy (16-6 MMA, 8-6 UFC), who will turn 40 in July, was largely dominated from bell to bell by Andrade (24-9 MMA, 15-7 UFC), who swept the scorecards with two 10-8 rounds from two judges and one 10-8 frame from the third. Their women’s flyweight fight was part of the UFC 283 main card at Jeunesse Arena in Rio de Janeiro.

Murphy had been on one of the best runs in the 125-pound division. Heading into the fight with former women’s strawweight champ Andrade, Murphy had won six of seven fights. Her lone loss in that stretch was a fourth-round TKO to dominant champ Valentina Shevchenko in a September 2021 title fight.

Murphy followed that loss up with a decision win over former women’s bantamweight titleholder Miesha Tate in Tate’s flyweight debut to get back on track, and along with Andrade was hopeful for a potential title shot with a win in Brazil.

Now, she posted on Instagram on Sunday, she’ll step back to rest, heal and assess what should be next. She also said she’s grateful to her corner for not stopping the fight – which is something the broadcast crew of Jon Anik, Daniel Cormier and Paul Felder mentioned multiple times during the fight.

“The fight was a beat down but not the way I imagined it 🙄,” Murphy posted. “Sometimes shit goes down and you just gotta learn from it and get better. Jessica is an insanely tough opponent and I will learn a lot from her. All these experiences – the good ones and bad ones – make me a better athlete and human. Thankfully I’m all good, nose is a little busted up and my head needs rest, but I’ll be fine in a few days.

“I’m glad my corner didn’t stop the fight. Tbh I thought the ref was going to stop it in the second round but the bell rang before he decided to. Either way, I was grateful for the chance to keep fighting. My head and nose will heal with rest, and my heart will heal with time. My adult life has been a dream, and sometimes I have to pay for that dream. I’ll be back sometime, but for now I’m just gonna lick my wounds and rest a bit.”

Andrade’s win was her third straight, though a submission of Amanda Lemos in April 2022 was at strawweight. She won the 115-pound title in 2019 with a knockout of Rose Namajunas, but lost the belt later that year in 42 seconds to Zhang Weili. Then she lost a rematch to Namajunas and moved up to flyweight. After a win over Katlyn Chookagian, she got a 2021 title shot with Shevchenko, but was knocked out in the second round.

UFC 283: Murphy vs. Andrade picks and predictions

Records: Murphy (16-5-0) | Andrade (23-9-0)

Fight result (2-way line or moneyline)

Andrade (-525) will cost you over 5 times your potential return, and that’s way too expensive to play on the 2-way line. But there is very little chance of the upset here, as Murphy (+390) should knuckle under facing the quick finisher Andrade and a pro-Brazilian crowd.

PASS.

Over/Under (O/U)

UNDER 2.5 ROUNDS (-125) is a decent play. Murphy is a veteran who will make Andrade work, but Andrade hasn’t gone past 3:19 of round 2 in six of her past 8 fights. To be safe you could play NO: WILL THE FIGHT GO THE DISTANCE (-135) but the payout will be a bit lower.

The UFC is on the road for its first pay-per-view of the year, and a pair of title fights top the lineup in Brazil.

UFC 283 takes place Saturday at Jeunesse Arena in Rio de Janeiro. The main card airs on pay-per-view following prelims on ABC and early prelims on ESPN+.

(Click here to open a PDF of the staff picks grid in a separate window.)

In the main event, former light heavyweight champion [autotag]Glover Teixeira[/autotag] (33-8 MMA, 16-6 UFC) takes on [autotag]Jamahal Hill[/autotag] (11-1 MMA, 5-1 UFC) for the belt that was vacated by Jiri Prochazka, who beat Teixeira to win the title in 2022.

Hill is a slight favorite at -140 at Tipico Sportsbook; the comeback on ex-champ Teixeira is +120 in front of his home-country fans. But Our 11 editors, writers, radio hosts and videographers have Hill with the lead at 7-4 in the picks.

In the co-feature, flyweight champion [autotag]Deiveson Figueiredo[/autotag] (21-2-1 MMA, 10-2-1 UFC) takes on former champion and current interim titleholder [autotag]Brandon Moreno[/autotag] (20-6-2 MMA, 8-3-2 UFC) for the fourth time with title unification at stake. Their series is knotted at 1-1-1. Moreno is a -125 favorite at the betting window, but it’s Figueiredo with the slimmest possible lead at 6-5 from our pickers.

Also on the main card, [autotag]Gilbert Burns[/autotag] (20-5 MMA, 13-5 UFC) takes on [autotag]Neil Magny[/autotag] (27-9 MMA, 20-8 UFC) at welterweight. Burns is a heavy favorite at nearly 5-1 at the sportsbook, and he’s one of our two unanimous picks at 11-0. Magny only has been this big of a betting underdog one other time in his career, and that was his loss to Shavkat Rakhmonov in June 2022.

Our other unanimous pick is former women’s strawweight champion [autotag]Jessica Andrade[/autotag] (23-9 MMA, 14-7 UFC), who will be looking to keep her momentum at flyweight when she takes on [autotag]Lauren Murphy[/autotag] (16-5 MMA, 8-5 UFC). Like Burns, Andrade is a -475 favorite in front of her home fans and she has a shutout in our picks at 11-0.

And to open the main card, comeback submission specialist [autotag]Paul Craig[/autotag] (16-5-1 MMA, 8-5-1 UFC) meets Brazilian fan favorite [autotag]Johnny Walker[/autotag] (19-7 MMA, 5-4 UFC) at light heavyweight. Walker nearly is a 2-1 favorite and has a 7-4 lead in the picks.

In the MMA Junkie reader consensus picks, Teixeira (59 percent), Moreno (67 percent), Burns (88 percent), Andrade (84 percent) and Craig (57 percent) are the choices.

Check out all the picks above.

UFC 283’s Lauren Murphy thinks Valentina Shevchenko won’t win forever

Lauren Murphy thinks the idea of beating UFC champ Valentina Shevchenko isn’t as inconceivable as it once was.

RIO DE JANEIRO – [autotag]Lauren Murphy[/autotag] thinks the idea of beating [autotag]Valentina Shevchenko[/autotag] isn’t as inconceivable as it once was.

Murphy (16-5 MMA, 8-5 UFC), who returns to action against Jessica Andrade (23-9 MMA, 14-7 UFC) in a key women’s flyweight bout on Saturday at UFC 283, already had her crack at dominant divisional titleholder Shevchenko (23-3 MMA, 12-2 UFC), but to no avail.

Shevchenko earned a fourth-round TKO over Murphy at UFC 266 in September 2021, but in her next fight nearly lost the belt. She edged out a split decision over Taila Santos at UFC 275 in June 2022 and went down to the wire in a bout many fans, fighters and media think she lost.

It’s Murphy’s ultimate goal to get back to another title shot, and while Shevchenko looked untouchable going into their first encounter, Murphy has a different perspective now.

“I thought Taila won that fight,” Murphy told MMA Junkie and other reporters at Wednesday’s UFC 283 media day. “I think it definitely showed she’s human. But everyone is beatable. Everyone has good days and bad days. Nobody wins forever in this sport. Nobody stays undefeated. Nobody wins forever. There’s a couple guys that retired on top, but I just don’t think Valentina’s different from any other human being on the planet. She’s not going to win forever. She’s not going to be the champ forever. She definitely faced some adversity in her last fight, and I think everybody noticed.”

Murphy meets Andrade on the main card of UFC 283, which airs on pay-per-view following prelims on ABC and ESPN+. It’s a critical fight for the 125-pound weight class, especially with Shevchenko recently calling upon contenders to come for her belt.

The upside of a potential win over Andrade is significant, but Murphy said it’s important for her to keep focus on completing the mission, and not what the fallout could be.

“I don’t see why not,” Murphy said of a potential title shot with a win. “I haven’t even thought about it. We’ll have to see what the fight goes and what’s going to happen before we start talking about what’s going to happen afterward.”

UFC 283 pre-event facts: Deiveson Figueiredo, Brandon Moreno make history with fourth fight

Deiveson Figueiredo will become the first in history to face the same man four straight times when he meets Brandon Moreno at UFC 283.

The UFC returns to Brazil for the first time since March 2020 on Saturday with UFC 283, which takes place at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas with a main card that airs on pay-per-view following prelims on ABC and ESPN+.

A championship doubleheader will close out the promotion’s first numbered event of the year. In the main event, [autotag]Glover Teixeira[/autotag] (33-8 MMA, 16-6 UFC) and [autotag]Jamahal Hill[/autotag] (11-1 MMA, 5-1 UFC) will attempt to decide a new light heavyweight champion when they meet for vacant gold.

The co-headliner, meanwhile, will see flyweight champion [autotag]Deiveson Figueiredo[/autotag] (21-2-1 MMA, 10-2-1 UFC) and interim titleholder [autotag]Brandon Moreno[/autotag] (20-5-2 MMA, 8-2-2 UFC) meet once again in a historic contest. They will unify 125-pound gold in the fourth octagon meeting between them, which has never happened before in company history.
