Fantasy football: Where to draft Las Vegas Raiders TE Darren Waller

Analyzing Las Vegas Raiders TE Darren Waller’s 2022 fantasy football ADP and where you should target him in your drafts.

It seems as though every couple of years, a new player emerges to take his place among elite fantasy football tight ends. In 2019, that was Las Vegas Raiders TE Darren Waller, who became an immediate impact player with the Raiders after 3 years of obscurity in Baltimore.

Below, we look at Darren Waller‘s 2022 fantasy football average draft position (ADP) and where you should draft him.

In 32 games in 2019-20, Waller caught 197 passes for 2,341 yards and 12 touchdowns — pushing Travis Kelce and Mark Andrews to be the top fantasy tight ends in the league. An injury-marred 2021 season and the arrival of Davante Adams have some questioning if Waller’s target share will take a hit from what made him a star.

Darren Waller’s ADP: 49.58

(ADP data courtesy of MyFantasyLeague.com; last updated Sunday 12:01 p.m. ET; ADPs continually change as more drafts occur)

Waller played in just 11 games last season, but what was more troubling was not only did his yards per game drop by more than 15, his catch percentage dropped from 75.4 percent to 59.1 percent.

Despite concerns about a production drop, much of that has been attributed to injuries and turmoil in the Raiders offense when Jon Gruden got fired and everything changed. It hasn’t impacted his fantasy value. His ADP places him as the clear-cut No. 4 tight end — behind Kyle Pitts (Atlanta Falcons) and ahead of George Kittle (50.16).

Where should you draft Waller?

I tend to agree that Waller’s production dip last year was the result of outside factors, not his role in the offense. The arrival of Adams shouldn’t have a huge impact on Waller’s role because Las Vegas throws a lot of passes and Adams is filling the role that was expected for Henry Ruggs III before his tragic fall from grace.

I tend to rank receivers who are viewed as on the same level by who that team has as its quarterback. Both Atlanta and San Francisco are making a change at quarterback while the Raiders are solid with Derek Carr.

While I would consider pushing Kittle ahead of him and I have my reservations about the supporting cast for Pitts, if you take Waller, and if he stays healthy a season of 90 catches for more than 1,000 yards and 8 TDs or so seems about right, he’ll be deserving of being drafted where he’s being projected.

Fantasy football: Where to draft Las Vegas Raiders WR Davante Adams

Analyzing Las Vegas Raiders WR Davante Adams’ 2022 fantasy football ADP and where you should target him in your drafts.

In his 8-year NFL career, Las Vegas Raiders wide receiver Davante Adams has been as dominant as anyone at his position. Over the last 4 seasons covering 57 games, he has caught 432 passes for 5,310 yards and 47 touchdowns — averaging 93.2 yards per game.

Below, we look at Davante Adams‘ 2022 fantasy football average draft position (ADP) and where you should draft him.

Adams spent his entire career groomed to be the main threat for Aaron Rodgers. Now he moves on to play with Derek Carr and prove that the success he had in Green Bay was as much the result of his ability as it was Rodgers’.

Davante Adams’ ADP: 13.62

(ADP data courtesy of MyFantasyLeague.com; last updated at time of this publishing – ADPs continually change as more drafts occur)

In the last 2 seasons (30 games) Adams has caught 238 passes for 2,927 yards a league-best 29 touchdowns. Yet, he is ranked 4th among wide receivers for ADP and has 2 others chasing him down as 2nd-round fantasy draft picks.

There are 3 players routinely coming off the board in the 1st round ahead of Adams — Cooper Kupp (Los Angeles Rams) at 5.14, Justin Jefferson (Minnesota Vikings) at 5.79 and Ja’Marr Chase (Cincinnati Bengals) at 8.88. Adams leads the list of 2nd-round picks, ahead of Stefon Diggs (Buffalo Bills) at 16.24 and CeeDee Lamb (Dallas Cowboys) at 18.86.

Receiving touchdowns: 11

Where should you draft Adams?

He is coming to the Raiders with a lot of expectations and is being viewed as the passing game Messiah that will bring Vegas to a higher level.

To expect the kind of numbers he produced with Rodgers is not rational. They combined for off-the-charts production. Coming to the AFC, opponents have limited experience against him, but what made Rodgers and Adams such a lethal tandem was that Rodgers would throw passes to Adams that Carr won’t even try. Those numbers add up quickly to padding a player’s stats.

I would rank Diggs ahead of Adams because he has Josh Allen, but 100 catches, 1,300 yards and 10 touchdowns for Adams are baseline numbers he should be able to reach.

Fantasy football: Where to draft Las Vegas Raiders QB Derek Carr

Analyzing Las Vegas Raiders QB Derek Carr’s 2022 fantasy football ADP and where you should target him in your drafts.

All eyes in the fantasy football world are going to be on Derek Carr of the Las Vegas Raiders. Despite posting solid yardage numbers and decent touchdown production, he has never been afforded fantasy football respect – and it appears that continues despite the arrival of Davante Adams.

Below, we look at Derek Carr‘s 2022 fantasy football average draft position (ADP) and where you should draft him.

Carr has been an iron man and should be acknowledged. For any fantasy player, your best ability is your availability. He has missed just 2 of 129 games, has thrown more than 500 passes every year of his career and set career highs for attempts, completions and passing yards last season. Still, he is mired in the Friend Zone of fantasy quarterbacks as a quality QB2.

Derek Carr’s ADP: 90.77

(ADP data courtesy of MyFantasyLeague.com; last updated at time of this publishing – ADPs continually change as more drafts occur)

There seems to be a clear cut-line when Carr is coming off draft boards in proportion to those in front of him and those behind him. He’s closing ground on those in front and distancing himself from those behind.

Carr has an ADP at 90.77 — a 9th or 10th round pick and the high end of the QB2 grouping. In front of him are Trey Lance (San Francisco 49ers) at 82.97 and Matthew Stafford (Los Angeles Rams) at 89.21 and behind him are Kirk Cousins (Minnesota Vikings) at 100.19 and Tua Tagovailoa (Miami Dolphins) at 116.80.

As the 14th ranked QB, if Carr moves the dial in any direction, it is much more likely to be moving up rather than moving down.

Completions | attempts: 428 | 626

Passing touchdowns: 23

Interceptions: 14

Carries | rushing yards: 40 | 108

Rushing touchdowns: 0

Where should you draft Carr?

When you make the decision to draft Carr, you understand that he is going to give fantasy points only with his arm, not his legs. He’s never been a rusher and, if he hasn’t been by now, he never will be.

While I’m not willing to push him past Stafford, despite concerns about his throwing elbow, I would definitely be much more inclined to take him over Lance — a very raw prospect on a team that is going run as many times as it throws and will have defenses in attack mode to rattle him from the first play.

In his current positioning, Carr has the chance to be a QB1B rather than a QB2. Paired up with someone like Aaron Rodgers — who gained a lot of fantasy football fame throwing to Adams — fantasy owners have the option to mix and match based on matchup. His ranking makes Carr a very strong value pick and one that should be grabbed as a tag team partner for whoever was taken as QB1 for a fantasy roster.
