Texas Football Recruiting: Longhorns lose out on two top in-state recruits

Recruiting blows are going to happen, no matter how big of momentum a program has. For Texas, they lost out on two 2022 targets this week.

Recruiting success has taken a significant bump under Steve Sarkisian’s short time in Austin. Five players have committed to Texas’ 2022 class, including four-star wide receivers Evan Stewart and Armani Winfield.

However, you cannot win them all. Two of the Longhorns’ targets, Landon Hullaby and Phaizon Wilson, have gone different ways.

Starting with Wilson, he was once a member of the 2022 class but decommitted when the on-the-field performances did not go well. The wide receiver hinted at an announcement on Friday night and released a top three school list. Alabama, Arkansas, and Ole Miss are the three programs still in the running for Wilson.

The new staff had been sending out re-offers to 2022 prospects throughout the first two months on the job. Wilson never reported one and was it was thought that the Longhorns moved on from him. Now, Wilson is heading to the SEC.

Moving to the defensive side of the ball with Hullaby — Texas was considered the favorite for the four-star safety. His younger brother, Jaden Hullaby, is currently on the Longhorns’ roster.

Landon shocked many on Saturday afternoon when he committed to Oregon over Texas. Blake Giddeon and Terry Joseph have had early recruiting momentum with the secondary being a position of need in the class. Losing out on Hullaby to a west coast program was surprising.

Texas still has plenty of prospects with other players at the positions. Recruiting blows are going to happen, no matter how big of momentum a program has. Sarkisian and his staff will be able to respond in the upcoming months.
