Commanders land pass rusher in new mock draft

Probably the last thing fans want is another first-round defensive lineman.

In looking at the remainder of the Washington Commanders’ 2023 schedule, it’s difficult to see many wins remaining. Currently 4-8, Washington has the Dolphins, Rams, Jets, 49ers and Cowboys on the schedule.

Sure, the Rams and Jets aren’t very good, but New York has an excellent defense, while the Rams will be playing at home, which means a West Coast trip for the Commanders.

You could make the case Washington is playing worse than anyone at the current moment.

There will be lots of changes for the Commanders next season. Washington already fired defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio and secondary coach Brent Vieselmeyer. At the end of the season, new owner Josh Harris will likely clean house.

Those changes will be on the roster, too. Washington traded edge rushers Chase Young and Montez Sweat ahead of the NFL trade deadline. Outside of the anomaly against the Giants in Week 11, the Commanders have struggled to sack opposing quarterbacks.

That means Washington will look to add pass-rush help in 2024. Will that come via free agency or the 2024 NFL draft? The Commanders will have five picks in the first three rounds, and they’ll almost certainly be selecting in the top 10, perhaps higher.

Washington currently holds the No. 7 overall pick if the draft were held today. In a new mock draft from Curt Popejoy of Draft Wire, he has the Commanders finding pass-rush help in UCLA edge Laiatu Latu.

The Commanders could be in dire need of pass rushers next season and Latu is one of the best.

Latu is 6-foot-5, 265 pounds with elite production. As a junior in 2022, Latu was an All-Pac-12 selection with 10.5 sacks. He’s been even better in 2023, with 13 sacks.

Here’s what ESPN draft analyst Jordan Reid thinks of Latu:

Washington could use a game-wrecker. Sweat was a reliable player for four-plus seasons but could never be called a game-wrecker. Same for Young.

However, there are concerns with Latu. He began his career at Washington in 2019, and he was medically retired due to a neck injury. He transferred to UCLA before 2022 and was cleared. So that doesn’t appear to be a concern, but NFL teams will have him under the microscope ahead of the draft.

Selecting another defensive lineman will not excite Washington fans. It’s tough to predict what the Commanders will do until we see who the new general manager and coach are in January.

Tampa Bay gets EDGE help in new PFF mock draft

Tampa Bay’s draft position for 2024 is volatile at the moment, but this is one position the Bucs could certainly improve at.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers don’t exactly know where they’re picking yet — the NFC South is volatile, after all — but there’s one position the team could certainly use to upgrade at.

Pro Football Focus released its latest mock draft for the 2024 season, and had the Bucs picking inside the Top 10 at eight. With that pick, writer Trevor Sikkema had the Bucs taking UCLA EDGE Laiatu Latu, one of the draft’s premier edge rushing prospects.

Here is what Sikkema had to say about the proposed pick:

The Buccaneers could entertain picking a quarterback if they end up with a top-10 selection. Washington’s Michael Penix Jr. would be the most likely next signal-caller off the board. He’s also from Tampa Bay, so it would be a homecoming if they went that direction.

But right now, the Buccaneers’ defensive line unit ranks in the bottom 10 in sacks, total pressures and pass-rush win percentage. Their defense has been disappointing this season, and fixing that starts up front. Latu has been the most productive pass-rusher in the country over the past two seasons, notching pash-rush win percentages above 20% in each of those campaigns.

Latu would certainly help Tampa Bay’s struggling pass rush. He’s had a 10-sack season his last two years in college football with the Bruins and is currently at 11 with two games to go, making him one of the more vaunted pass rushers in college football. If he’s available when the Bucs pick, they could be remiss not to take him. The Bucs have (arguably) missed on some of their defensive line picks in recent years, but hitting on a young edge rusher would be big for this Tampa Bay team.

2024 mock draft: 2-round projections prior to NFL Week 10

The second edition of the 2024 NFL mock draft from Draft Wire’s Jeff Risdon

It’s time to update the two-round mock draft ahead of one of the last big weekends of college football.

My first edition of the 2024 mock draft came out after Week 4. There has been quite a bit of football, both college and NFL, to impact the projections.

The draft order here is based on the current NFL standings entering Week 10. We’re still in the “presenting ideas and possibilities” phase of draft projections, too.

2024 mock draft: Updated projections after NFL Week 4

2024 mock draft: Updated projections for NFL Week 5 from Draft Wire’s Jeff Risdon

For the first few weeks of the college football season, Curt Popejoy has handled the mock draft projection duties here at Draft Wire. This week, it’s my turn to crank out my very first set of 2024 projections.

As with all of the mock drafts I do with one exception every year, these projections represent what I think the team might do with the pick at each selection. It does not necessarily reflect the choices I would make.

The draft order here is the current NFL draft order after the conclusion of Week 4. There are some players included who are underclassmen that might not declare, most notably QBs Caleb Williams and Shedeur Sanders.

Week 4 Scouting Notebook: A look at potential Chargers prospects in 2024 NFL draft

Here are a handful of prospects for Chargers fans to watch in Week 4.

The fourth week of college football is here, which means we are back with another edition of the Scouting Notebook.

The Scouting Notebook will feature prospects to keep an eye on throughout the day. While some may think it’s too early to start talking about the 2024 NFL draft, there’s never a bad time to talk about the future of the Chargers.

With that being said, here are a handful of prospects to watch for in Week 4.

Top 50 prospects for the 2024 NFL draft for the beginning of fall

Updating the top 50 prospects for the 2024 NFL draft for the beginning of fall

Summer is falling into autumn on the calendar. While it might not feel like it in many places, the autumnal equinox will take place early Saturday morning.

That means summer football is over for the vast majority of college teams and 2024 NFL draft prospects. It’s a good time to take stock and re-rank the top 50 prospects on the overall 2024 big board.

These rankings are based on current observational grades and do not necessarily reflect the order in which they will be taken. That’s what mock drafts are for…
