Lady Vols golf team takes sixth in Starkville

Recapping Tennessee’s performance in fall golf tournament.

STARKVILLE — The University of Tennessee women’s golf team finished sixth at The Ally at Old Waverly Golf Club.

The three-day event concluded Wednesday and was hosted by Mississippi State.

Lady Vols’ junior Mikayla Bardwell took third in the individual standings, despite struggling on the tournament’s final day.

She shot 2-over 74 on Wednesday and finished 6-under for the tournament.

South Carolina won the event with a team score of 852. LSU was second (857) followed by Auburn (861), Ole Miss (863), Georgia (868), Tennessee (870), Florida (870), Alabama (874), Arkansas (879), Vanderbilt (879), Mississippi State (883), Kentucky (892), Texas A&M (894), Missouri (915) and Southern Miss (939).

Individuals for Tennessee: Bardwell (210,) Vanessa Gilley (214), Michaela Williams (219), Nicole Whitson (232) and Waverly Whitson (232).

Lady Vols soccer ties Kentucky

A recap of the Lady Vols’ soccer match at Kentucky Saturday

LEXINGTON — The University of Tennessee women’s soccer team played Kentucky to a 1-1 draw Sunday at the Wendell and Vickie Bell Soccer Complex.

The Lady Vols (2-2-1, 2-2-1 SEC) scored first when junior defender Abbey Burdette tallied in the second minute of the match.

Claudia Dupasupil picked up an assist on Tennessee’s marker.

The Wildcats (0-3-2, 0-3-2) pulled even in the sixth minute on a goal by Julia Grosso. That marker was unassisted.

After that, the two respective goalkeepers took center stage.

Tennessee’s Lindsey Romig, the reigning Southeastern Conference Player of the Week, made seven saves in the match.

Kentucky’s Brooke Litman made made six stops. The Lady Vols outshot Kentucky, 22-16, in the match.

Next up for Tennessee is a showdown with Texas A&M Friday at the Regal Soccer Complex. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. EDT.

LEXINGTON — The University of Tennessee volleyball team had a tall order in its first Southeastern Conference series of the 2020 season.

The Lady Vols opened the campaign against No. 3 Kentucky and were swept in their first match Friday night.

Tennessee and the Wildcats returned to the floor Saturday night and Kentucky (2-0, 2-0 SEC) captured a four-set victory over the Lady Vols, prevailing 24-26, 25-23, 25-22, 25-13.

Junior outside hitter Danielle Mahaffey had 17 kills in the match for the Lady Vols (0-2, 0-2) and middle blocker Raquel Perinar, another junior, had a career-high six blocks for UT.

Junior Lily Felts, a local product from Berean Christian School in Knoxville, had two solo blocks and assisted on another.

Despite the loss Saturday, senior Madison Coulter reached a milestone with her 1,000th career dig.

Coulter played her prep volleyball at Maryville High School.

Tennessee volleyball swept in opener at Kentucky

UT falls to Kentucky in volleyball in season opener.

LEXINGTON — The University of Tennessee volleyball team opened its 2020 season on a losing note Friday night.

The Lady Vols were swept by No. 3 Kentucky, 25-15, 25-16, 25-15 at Memorial Coliseum.

Tennessee (0-1, 0-1 SEC) received a solid performance from Ava Bell, who hit .353 in her return to the Lady Vols’ lineup after an injury cut her 2019 campaign short.

Raquel Perinar led Tennessee with eight kills against the Wildcats (1-0, 1-0). She also had two blocks while hitting .545.

Sophomore and one-time Knoxville area high school standout Kailey Keeble had the second double-double of her collegiate career as she had 13 assists and 10 digs.

Keeble, a native of Walland, Tennessee, played her high school volleyball at Heritage High School in Maryville.

Lady Vols open volleyball season Friday

LEXINGTON — The University of Tennessee volleyball team will open its 2020 season at Kentucky this weekend.

Kentucky begins the campaign ranked No. 3 in the country.

Tennessee and Kentucky will play twice this weekend with the series getting underway Friday at 7 p.m. EDT.

The two rivals will meet again Saturday at 7 p.m. EDT.

Friday night’s season opener will be televised on the SEC Network. Saturday’s match will be aired on SEC Network+.

This season, Southeastern Conference teams will each play a conference-only schedule. Each team will have eight matches, which will be played over six weeks.

Teams will also play two-match series on back-to-back nights.

The format will permit teams to be flexible as they monitor developments related to the coronavirus pandemic.

The Lady Vols will host its first home series Oct. 28-29 when they entertain Georgia.

That series follows a BYE week.

 

Mac Midgley commits to Tennessee

KNOXVILLE — The Tennessee Lady Vols soccer team and head coach Brian Pensky received a verbal commitment from a midfielder for the class of 2022.

Macaira “Mac” Midgely committed to the Lady Vols soccer team.

She announced her decision on social media via Twitter on Tuesday.

She Tweeted:

“Beyond blessed to announce that I have verbally committed to play soccer at The University of Tennessee. A huge special thank you to my family, friends, coaches, teammates and the Michigan Hawks for all the love and support along this crazy ride. GO VOLS BABYYY.”

Midgely plays her club soccer for the Michigan Hawks.

Lindsey Romig named SEC Defensive Player of the Week

UT soccer player Lindsey Romig named SEC Defensive Player of the Week after the Lady Vols’ 2-1 soccer victory over Missouri.

BIRMINGHAM — University of Tennessee goalkeeper Lindsey Romig was named the Southeastern Conference’s Defensive Player of the Week.

Romig, a sophomore from Midlothian, Virginia, made eight saves in the Lady Vols’ 2-1 SEC victory over Missouri on Oct. 9 at Regal Soccer Stadium.

Her eight saves against the Tigers tied a career-high.

She faced career-highs in shots (19) and shots on goal (nine) last week against Missouri.

Romig made six saves in the second half of Tennessee’s latest match. She made three stops in the final seven minutes of the match and sealed the victory with a save in the waning seconds.

The Lady Vols (2-2, 2-2 SEC) will travel to Lexington to play Kentucky on Sunday.

Kickoff is slated for 5 p.m. EDT and will be broadcast on ESPNU.

Lady Vols outlast Missouri in soccer

Recapping Tennessee’s soccer victory over Missouri Friday night

KNOXVILLE — The Tennessee Lady Vols soccer team kept its perfect home record intact Friday night with a 2-1 victory over Missouri at Regal Soccer Stadium.

The Lady Vols (2-2, 2-2 SEC) took a 1-0 lead over the Tigers when Alicia Donley scored the match’s first goal in the 45th minute.

Claudia Dipasupil was credited with the assist on Donley’s first marker of the season.

The Lady Vols extended their advantage to 2-0 when Jaida Thomas scored her second marker of the 2020 campaign.

Dipasupil and Mackenzie George each picked up assists on the goal, which came in the 71st minute.

Missouri (1-2, 1-2 SEC) scored its lone goal of the match when Zoe Cross tallied an unassisted marker in the 79th minute.

Despite earning a hard-fought victory, the Lady Vols were outshot 19-7, however six of Tennessee’s shots landed on target.

The Tigers had nine shots on goal. UT goalkeeper Lindsey Romig had eight saves in the victory.

The Lady Vols return to action on Oct. 18 when they travel to Lexington to face Kentucky.

Kick off is slated for 5 p.m. EDT. The match will be televised on ESPNU.

Lady Vols defeat No. 10 Vanderbilt, 1-0.

KNOXVILLE — The Lady Vols soccer team was in action Sunday at Regal Soccer Stadium.

Tennessee (1-1) defeated No. 10 Vanderbilt (1-1), 1-0, in overtime. It was Tennessee’s first win over the Commodores since 2013.

Redshirt freshman forward Jaida Thomas scored the golden goal for Tennessee in the 92nd minute. The goal came off a corner kick from junior midfielder Hannah Tillett.

“One of the things we really wanted to do today was to give a performance that we could be proud of, one that we could feel good about,” Tennessee head coach Brian Pensky said following the match. “To get a win and get three points, we couldn’t feel any better. All the credit goes to our team, to our players.”

The victory over No. 10 Vanderbilt was Tennessee’s 11th all-time over a top-10 nationally ranked opponent.

The Lady Vols will be back in action Friday at Georgia. The match will be televised by SEC Network and is slated for a 7 p.m. EDT start.
