Lady Vols defeat Ohio State in top 25 match, advance to championship

Lady Vols advance to the ITA National Team Indoor Championship after defeating Ohio State.

No. 18 Tennessee (4-0) defeated No. 15 Ohio State (3-1), 4-3, on Saturday at Goodfriend Tennis Center in the second round of the ITA Kickoff Weekend.

The Lady Vols advance to ITA National Team Indoor Championship Feb. 7-11.

“That’s what college tennis is all about,” Tennessee assistant coach Elizabeth Scotty said. “You love to see those moments when both teams put it all out on the line. Ohio State came out massive after that doubles point. For the team, for Tennessee, we just rallied behind one another and slowly inched our way back into it. It was incredible.”

Tennessee assistant Jenna Burdette served as the Lady Vols’ acting head coach at Texas.

“Head coach Kim Caldwell did not accompany the Tennessee women’s basketball team to Austin for tonight’s game at Texas,” Tennessee announced. “She and husband Justin are the proud parents of a new son, Conor Scott Caldwell. Mom, dad and baby are doing well.

“Assistant coach Jenna Burdette, who is in her fourth season working alongside Caldwell, will serve as the acting head coach in Caldwell’s absence.”

Caldwell is in her first season as the Lady Vols’ head coach.

Karlyn Pickens named first-team All America

Tennessee pitcher Karlyn Pickens named first-team All America.

Tennessee softball junior pitcher Karlyn Pickens was named preseason All-America by D1Softball.

She also received preseason first-team All-America honors from Softball America.

In addition, Pickens has been named to the D1Softball Top 100, ranking No. 4 in the nation. The Weaverville, North Carolina native also received preseason acclaim from USA Softball, making its top 53 watch list for collegiate player of the year. She was named to Softball America’s Top 100, ranking No. 4.

Pickens (22-7) was a consensus first-team All-America standout as a sophomore following the 2024 campaign. She recorded a 1.12 ERA and was named SEC Pitcher of the Year.

Pickens joined Monica Abbott as the only Lady Vols to earn the SEC honor.

She appeared in 38 contests in 2024, including 27 starts, recording 15 complete games, 12 shutouts, one save and 225 strikeouts.

Pickens’ ERA led the SEC and was third-best nationally.

Leyla Britez Risso named SEC Player of the Week

Tennessee junior Leyla Britez Risso named SEC Player of the Week.

Tennessee women’s tennis player Leyla Britez Risso was named SEC Player of the Week on Wednesday.

Britez Risso, a junior, was the first player to earn the honor in 2025 after Tennessee’s victories against East Carolina and Wake Forest.

In Tennessee’s, 4-3, victory over the Demon Deacons, Britez Risso earned the Lady Vols’ first point of the match, defeating Brianna Baldi, 6-3, 6-1.

Britez Risso’s singles win came after her and doubles partner Catherine Aulia  played Wake Forest’s tandem of Nevena Carton and Kady Tannenbaum, ranked No. 44 in the nation, and led, 6-5, in a match that was not concluded before the Demon Deacons claimed the doubles point.

In the Lady Vols’, 4-0, victory over the Buccaneers, Britez Brisso and Aulia defeated Isabella Rivera and Lilly Lancaster, 6-0, at No. 2 doubles.

Britez Risso also won at No. 4 singles, earning a 6-1,6-1, victory over the Buccaneers’ Anne Lou Champion.

Susan Clements named Lady Vols’ assistant coach

Tennessee hires Susan Clements as an assistant coach for the Lady Vols.

Tennessee volleyball hired Susan Clements as an assistant coach, Lady Vols head coach Eve Rackham Watt announced Monday.

Clements has more than two decades of collegiate experience and joins the Lady Vols prior to the 2025 season.

“We are thrilled to welcome Susan to Rocky Top and feel extremely fortunate to have someone of her experience level join our staff,” Rackham Watt said. “She has been a part of multiple championship teams both as a head coach and an assistant coach.

“I have known Susan for over 20 years, and I am excited for what she can bring to our program. I believe our players will learn a lot from her, and she understands what it takes to win at this level. All of us are looking forward to having Susan join us this spring.”

In 2024, Clements was an associate head coach at Coastal Carolina. She previously served as a head coach at Niagara, Wright State and Georgetown College.

Clements also served as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at North Carolina.

She was the winningest head coach in Niagara history and guided the team to its first NCAA Tournament in school history in 2009.

Clements was an outside hitter at Georgetown College and was a two-time Mid-South Conference Player of the Year. She was inducted into the Georgetown College Athletics Hall of Fame in 2014.

Vanderbilt defeats Lady Vols at home for first time since 2014

Vanderbilt defeats Tennessee basketball by one-point in Nashville.

Vanderbilt (15-4, 2-3 SEC) defeated No. 15 Tennessee (15-3, 3-3 SEC), 71-70, on Sunday at Memorial Gymnasium in Nashville, Tennessee.

Mikayla Blakes converted a two-point shot to give Vanderbilt a 71-70 lead with .8 seconds remaining and securing a victory for the Commodores.

Blakes led all scorers with 23 points. Talaysia Cooper led the Lady Vols with 20 points.

Vanderbilt’s last win at home against Tennessee was on Jan. 12, 2014. The Lady Vols’ eight-game win streak against Vanderbilt ended on Sunday.

Tennessee now leads the all time women’s basketball series against Vanderbilt, 80-11, dating to 1976.

Tennessee will next play on Thursday at Texas. Tipoff between the Lady Vols and Longhorns is slated for 9 p.m. EST in Austin, Texas (SEC Network).

No. 18 Tennessee (2-0) opened its 2025 women’s tennis season with two victories on Saturday. Both matches were contested at Wake Forest Tennis Center in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

The Lady Vols defeated Wake Forest, 4-3, in its first match. Tennessee concluded play with a, 4-0, victory against East Carolina.

Tennessee will next play Texas Tech on Friday at Goodfriend Tennis Center. First serve is scheduled for 4 p.m. EST.
