LA Rams HC Sean McVay gives update on Stetson Bennett’s progress

‘I think today seemed like his sharpest day to camp up to this point.’

Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay says rookie quarterback Stetson Bennett had his “sharpest day” of camp on Sunday.

The former Georgia Bulldog is competing for the backup role behind Georgia great Matthew Stafford.

“He’s done good,” McVay said. “I thought he had a good day today. I thought the receivers and tight ends, I thought guys made plays for him. He’s pretty steady. What I really like about him is if a play doesn’t go well, he’s able to reset himself and go to the next play. You can definitely feel the athleticism show up that you guys saw on display during his career at Georgia. I think he is getting more and more comfortable.

I thought today was a real bright spot for him. I think today seemed like his sharpest day to camp up to this point. He definitely looked more comfortable today. You can just see he is getting more comfortable with just some of the concepts. Because it is very different. Football is still football, and when the ball is snapped, there are some things that make sense to him.”

Bennett was taken by the Rams in the fourth-round of the 2023 NFL draft after an exceptional career in Athens. If the two-time national champion keeps making plays like these, it’s only a matter of time before Bennett gets his chance as a pro.

Former Michigan football cornerback Vincent Gray finds a new NFL home

Awesome for him! #GoBlue

Vincent Gray was a four-year letterman for the Michigan Wolverines from 2018-2021. When Gray opted to enter the 2022 NFL draft, there was optimism he was going to be a mid-to-late draft pick.

But Gray went undrafted and he was quickly scooped up by the New Orleans Saints as an undrafted free agent. Gray spent the entire season on the Saints practice squad.

The Saints waived Gray this offseason and now the former Wolverine has found a new home. The Los Angeles Rams, who are in need of cornerback depth, have signed Gray.

Gray will have some work to do in order to make the team, but the Rams are a good landing spot for the young corner.

During his four-year career in Ann Arbor, Gray played in 35 games with 21 starts at corner, and he was an All-Big Ten player. Gray totaled 91 career tackles, one sack, and 15 pass deflections with the Wolverines.

Sean McVay details why Rams selected Georgia QB Stetson Bennett

The Los Angeles Rams surprised NFL draft analysts when they selected Georgia quarterback Stetson Bennett

The Los Angeles Rams surprised quite a few NFL draft analysts when they selected Stetson Bennett in the fourth round of the 2023 NFL draft. The Rams really liked Bennett throughout the predraft process.

Los Angeles head coach Sean McVay and the Rams elected to draft Bennett with the No. 128 pick. Bennett was the seventh quarterback drafted.

In 2022, the Rams went 2-6 in games without Matthew Stafford and needed to upgrade the backup quarterback position. Stafford missed several games last season with a neck injury and a concussion. However, the Rams entered the 2023 NFL draft with little early round draft capital, so Los Angeles could not easily draft a top quarterback. Additionally, the Rams want to continue to contend in the NFC, so it made sense for Los Angeles to take an experienced quarterback like Bennett.

Bennett’s final college game was a dominant, 65-7, national championship victory over TCU. Perhaps he impressed a few folks in SoFi Stadium, which is home to the Los Angeles Rams, with his five total touchdown performance in the national championship game.

Sean McVay views Stetson Bennett as a winner. Bennett came up huge in clutch moments throughout his college career. Bennett saved his best performances for the College Football Playoff.

McVay is a big fan of Georgia’s offensive system and thinks it translates well to the NFL. He also is impressed with Bennett’s athleticism, particularly Bennett’s quickness.

Here’s everything Sean McVay had to say about Stetson Bennett:

Bobby Wagner returning to Seahawks on one-year deal

According to Adam Schefter at ESPN, former Seahawks linebacker Bobby Wagner is returning to Seattle on a one-year deal worth $7 million.

According to Adam Schefter at ESPN, former Seahawks linebacker Bobby Wagner is returning to Seattle on a one-year deal worth $7 million. For what it’s worth, free safety Quandre Diggs was actually the first to report it.

Wagner was released by the Seahawks last March and signed a five-year contract with the Rams, only to be a surprise cut a few weeks ago.

This comes as welcome news for Seattle’s defense, which may have had the thinnest linebacker corps in the league prior to Wagner coming back on board. For now Wagner should project to start next to Devin Bush, at least until Jordyn Brooks is recovered from his ACL tear.

Wagner has played 168 career games, 151 of them in a Seahawks uniform. He’s made eight Pro Bowl teams and earned six first-team All-Pro honors in his career. He has totaled an incredible 1,523 combined tackles and will most likely be a first-ballot Hall of Famer regardless of how the rest of his time in the NFL unfolds.

Rams uncertain if Matt Stafford will return this season

According to a report by Adam Schefter at ESPN, the Ram’s aren’t sure if veteran quarterback Matt Stafford will play again this season.

[sendtonews_embed video_id=”Cii9qkzLhZ-2381609-7498″]

After the Seahawks face Derek Carr and the Raiders today, the next team on the schedule is the division rival Rams. LA is going through an all-time Super Bowl hangover that may about to get even worse.

According to a report by Adam Schefter at ESPN, the 3-7 Rams aren’t sure if veteran quarterback Matt Stafford will play again this season.

Stafford is dealing with a neck strain and has also suffered two concussions in recent weeks. Now 34 years old, few QBs around the league have taken more punishment over the last decade – his offensive lines with the Lions tended to be on the poor side in pass protection.

If Stafford can’t go, the Rams will look to Bryce Perkins to start again in his place.

The Rams are also missing superstar wide receiver Cooper Kupp, who’s out 6-8 weeks with an ankle injury, so Seattle should probably be considered the favorite for next week’s matchup.

If Stafford is indeed out for the year it will be doubly fortunate for the Seahawks, who will face LA again at home in Week 18.

Update:

According to a somewhat-conflicting report by Ian Rapoport at NFL.com, Stafford’s symptoms are improving and the Rams have no plans to shut him down right now.

Bills vow to remain focused despite huge week 1 win

#Bills vow to remain focused despite huge week 1 win:

Going into the Bills nationally televised opening season game vs. the Rams, expectations could not have been higher.

The nearly unanimous Super Bowl favorites took the moment in stride, throttling the Rams, 31-10 in their own house.

Following the win, the Bills were asked if a blowout victory in week 1 would only add to the pressure surrounding the team moving forward.

No, we needed to win a game,” Bills quarterback Josh Allen told the media. “We needed to put our best foot forward and try to execute the way we know we can execute and just try to win a game, that’s all. 1-0 each week is our mindset. Playoff caliber. That’s what we’re trying to do, that’s what Coach McDermott preaches. That’s what our mindset and mentality is every time we step in our facility is, ‘what can we do to allow ourselves the opportunity to go 1-0 this week?'”

Bills head coach Sean McDermott was asked if the team felt they needed to make a statement opening night vs. the defending Super Bowl champs given what is expected of his squad this season.

“No I just think… yes, I think they are a good team. Well coached and good players,” McDermott said during his post-game press conference. “Like I heard Josh’s comments in the hallway there, it’s just about winning one game and that’s what it was. We came together in the second half, played good complimentary football starting with the opening kickoff of the second half and there’s still some things we need to work on in terms of taking care of the football.”

While both Buffalo’s QB and coach said all the right things regarding keeping calm, cool and collected, one of the newest (and flashiest) additions to the Bills roster was a bit more transparent with his takeaway from the Week 1 victory.

“For one, we gonna make the plane do backflips on the way home tonight,” Bills linebacker Von Miller told reporters after the game. “We gonna celebrate this win, yes, we gonna do that. Cause like I said, it’s a humbling league. You have to celebrate wins, you just have to do it. Then you gotta go back to the lab tomorrow, scratch this up and look at all the things we did well and all the things we didn’t do well and then move forward.”

Being one of the players on the Bills roster to actually have a Super Bowl ring, Miller spoke from experience on how to stay focused after big wins even when pressure is mounting.

“You know, we got great leadership in this locker room,” Miller continued. “We got great coaches. We’re not gonna let the success of this game… let our guard down or whatever that may be. We got a great group of guys. We enjoy winning and we enjoy working. We’re gonna celebrate tonight… I said that about five times. We gonna celebrate tonight and have fun on the plane ride home and then gonna digest this game and then we gonna move forward to a great Tennessee Titans team on Monday night.”

While the Bills have to feel good about their game one performance, Von Miller is dead on in acknowledging the Bills will have a big test coming up right away in Week 2. The Bills have struggled the last couple of seasons vs. the Titans in primetime and a Monday night showdown in Orchard Park provides no opportunity to take their foot off the pedal.

If the Bills do manage to win and improve to 2-0, you can bet questions about expectations and pressure will continue… but if Thursday night was any indication, the Bills appear more than ready to embrace it.
