Ohio State forward Kyle Young’s status up in the air for Maryland

Chris Holtmann was asked about Ohio State forward Kyle Young’s status today, and his answer was day-to-day and game-to-game.

Ohio State forward Kyle Young has been out since undergoing an appendectomy last week and he is considered to be a game-to-game decision at this point. And if you think Buckeye head coach Chris Holtmann has the answer on when he’ll come back, he doesn’t. Not yet anyway.

When discussing his team today, Holtmann was asked about Young’s status for the game against Maryland Tuesday night.

“Kyle is day-to-day, game-to game,” said Holtmann. “I’m not really ready to make a statement on tomorrow’s game with him. But obviously it’s a short turnaround with him after surgery so we’ll see”…”We’re going to see what he looks like today. He could potentially do some things today, but a lot of that’s going to be based on his pain tolerance.”

So, never say never — especially with a guy like Young who played through a stress-fracture situation last year, but the medical staff and coaches certainly won’t want to put him in harm’s way.

Ohio State could definitely use his experience and grit in a tough road game against a quality Maryland squad, but not at the expense of his health for the long-term.

It’s likely a next-man-up deal again in College Park.

Watch what Ohio State basketball head coach Chris Holtmann had to say after the Buckeyes lost an ugly one to Wisconsin.

Well that was a stinker.

Ohio State looked about as sloppy as you can in trying to bounce back from a loss while hosting Big Ten foe Wisconsin. It started out both halves well but got bogged down by a physical and scrappy Badger team that likes to slow things down and muck things up a bit. In the end the Buckeyes couldn’t handle it all and fell 61-57.

As he always does, head coach Chris Holtmann met with the media to discuss his team’s performance. If you didn’t get a chance to catch everything he said, you can click on the YouTube video provided by the Columbus Dispatch and listen to everything he had to say.

Holtmann touches on the need for his team to take care of the basketball better, the absence of Kyle Young, end-game situations and more.

Ohio State is next in action on the road against Maryland on Tuesday. If it performs like it did tonight it’ll be a long, long game.

Ohio State forward Kyle Young to miss game against Wisconsin Friday

According to Chris Holtmann, Ohio State forward Kyle Young will miss the Wisconsin game Friday recovering from an appendectomy.

Ohio State forward Kyle Young will be out of the lineup against Wisconsin after he underwent appendix surgery this week.

Young became ill before and after the West Virginia game on Sunday, but the coaches thought he was in the early stages of the flu. As it turns out, it was the beginning of appendicitis that required him to be treated and undergo surgery the next day after the loss. He finished the game with two points and eleven rebounds.

But now, he’ll be on the shelf as he recovers and will be evaluated game-to-game according to Ohio State head coach Chris Holtmann.

“So Kyle will be out tomorrow,” said Holtmann. “He is kind of game-to-game at this point, but he’s going to be ruled out for tomorrow’s game. He’s recovering well. You know, with these kind of things, it’s always next man up — I say that also recognizing the value Kyle brings to this team. ”

Ohio State basketball forward Kyle Young to potentially undergo appendix surgery

Ohio State basketball forward Kyle Young fell ill before and after the contest with West Virginia and is being evaluated for appendicitis.

According to a report by Adam Jardy of the Columbus Dispatch, Ohio State basketball forward Kyle Young is being evaluated for appendicitis and may have to undergo surgery.

Young started for the Buckeyes Sunday in Cleveland against West Virginia, but according to the report from BuckeyeXtra (subscription may be required) he vomited prior and after the game OSU eventually lost 67-59. The Ohio State staff believed him to be in the early stages of the flu and continued to monitor him.

“It was touch and go with him,” Holtmann said according to Jardy.

Young has added a much needed presence for the Buckeye basketball team this year. He’s been the glue that does a little bit of everything on the court, from grabbing rebounds, making crucial passes, or even adding some much scoring (8.3 per contest) at times.

Young missed a few games with a stress fracture in his leg last spring but has been healthy so far this year. There is no timetable on when he will return if he does have to have surgery, but we’ll stay on top of it.

Ohio State looks sloppy in first half but pulls away from Southeast Missouri State

The Ohio State basketball team looked sloppy in the first half but found its game in the second half to beat SE Missouri State going away.

The Ohio State basketball team needed a shot in the arm Tuesday after getting hammered on the road by Minnesota Sunday. It by and large got what it needed despite a sloppy start, winning going away 80-48.

The Buckeyes came out with what looked like a hangover early on in the fist half. It struggled with far too many turnovers, and allowed a 3-7 mid-major program to hang around and even lead for a good bit of the first half. Ohio State went on a little run to end the first twenty minutes up 35-26, but there’s no doubt it got an earful from head coach Chris Holtmann in the locker room.

It seemed to work.

The Buckeyes came out of the second half with much more intensity and purpose, but more importantly stopped being as charitable with the basketball. In the end, it was a much needed bounce back prior to heading to Las Vegas to take on Kentucky.

Kaleb Wesson notched a double-double, leading the Buckeyes with 18 points and 10 rebounds. His brother Andre Wesson joined three others in double figures. The older Wesson chipped in 14 points, and D.J. Carton and Kyle Young each added 10 a piece as Ohio State shot 64% from the field for the game.

The matchup with Kentucky will be another good litmus test for the Buckeyes. Game time is set for 5:15 PM Eastern on CBS.
