Ravens will face Texans in divisional round of AFC playoffs

The Baltimore Ravens and Houston Texans will face off in the divisional round of the playoffs in a rematch of a Week 1 meeting

The Ravens are back from their first-round bye, and they know their opponent after the Pittsburgh Steelers’ 31-17 loss to the Buffalo Bills.

Thanks to the dominant play of Josh Allen, Baltimore will host the Houston Texans at M&T Bank Stadium in a rematch of a 25-9 season-opening win.

In that game, rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud completed 28 of 44 passing attempts for 242 yards in his NFL regular-season debut but didn’t lead any touchdown-scoring drives.

Odell Beckham had two catches for 38 yards as he deferred to the rookie Zay Flowers in his debut.

Playing in his first game after a ten-month absence, Lamar Jackson was 17-22 passing for 169 yards and one interception while finishing with a 79.5 rating.

Jackson looked rusty at times but was efficient, had 38 yards rushing, and avoided nasty hits.

This is a different Houston team, and the Texans are flying high after dismantling the Cleveland Browns in the wild-card round opener.

Looking at the top 5 Ravens free agents Eric DeCosta must re-sign in the offseason

We’re looking at the top five in-house free agents that the Baltimore Ravens need to re-sign in the 2024 NFL offseason

General manager Eric DeCosta, Ozzie Newsome’s successor, has grown increasingly aggressive in handing out contracts, and he’s now built a Super Bowl hopeful for 2023 and beyond.

Baltimore currently has about $19,485,086 in salary cap space per Over The Cap, and they’re spending about $120+ million plus on the offensive side of the football.

The Ravens also have 27 players scheduled to hit free agency, and some tough decisions will be made regarding who returns to Baltimore.

PFF recently did an early ranking of the top 50 free agents for 2024, and John Harbaugh’s squad had four players make the list.

The overall positional spending will change in the coming years after Lamar Jackson signed a massive five-year, $260 million contract extension, making him among the three highest-paid players on average in NFL history.

With the NFL offseason fast approaching, we’re looking at five players the Ravens have to re-sign.

Ravens OLB Kyle Van Noy reminds team to stay locked in: ‘Turn the page and let’s go’

Kyle Van Noy on Ravens win over 49ers: ‘Turn the page and let’s go’

No team in the NFL is currently riding higher than the Baltimore Ravens after convincingly defeating the San Francisco 49ers on Christmas Day, 33-19, to improve to a league-best record of 12-3.

While the team enjoyed the victory in the locker room following the game, veteran outside linebacker Kyle Van Noy reminded them of the need to stay locked in.

“Please enjoy this win,” Van Noy said. “They are hard to come by. But just know, we got more unfinished business to do. So take your time, enjoy this, because it’s real. Love it, appreciate it, but turn the page and let’s go.”

After spending years with the New England Patriots earlier in his career and being a part of two Super Bowl victories, the now 32-year-old Van Noy knows what it takes to reach the ultimate goal of feeling the confetti rain down in February.

Van Noy has been a major contributor to one of the league’s top defenses after being signed by the Ravens a few weeks into the season. His seven sacks rank third behind defensive tackle Justin Madubuike and fellow veteran edge rusher Jadeveon Clowney.

Staying locked in is as important as ever for Baltimore, with the AFC’s No. 1 seed on the line in a game against the Miami Dolphins this Sunday on a shortened week of preparation.

Where the Baltimore Ravens currently rank in 2024 Pro Bowl voting

Early results for the ongoing voting process for the 2024 Pro Bowl were revealed on Wednesday.

The Baltimore Ravens are looking to be well-represented in the Pro Bowl with the fourth-most votes among all 32 teams with 16 players in total making the top 10 of their position in the AFC.

Where does each player rank in the AFC?

Browns WR Cedric Tillman fined for blindside block on Ravens’ Kyle Van Noy

The Browns got a spark from a block from Cedric Tillman on Ravens LB Kyle Van Noy. The NFL, however, did not appreciate it.

The Cleveland Browns and Baltimore Ravens both saw players get fined for hits during their Week 10 matchup. First, it was left tackle Ronnie Stanley who was fined for knocking cornerback Denzel Ward out of the game. Now, Cleveland wide receiver Cedric Tillman has been fined $5,667 for a blindside block on linebacker Kyle Van Noy.

Tillman, who has yet to make a statement as a receiver since he was drafted in the third round out of Tennessee, provided a spark to the Browns. Cleveland went on to overcome an early 14-point deficit, and a 14-point fourth quarter deficit to beat the Ravens. They now look to advance to 7-3 on the season as they take on the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday.

Needless to say, it would not be a surprise to see the veterans in the locker room pick up the tab for the young receiver living off of a rookie contract.

Ravens edge rusher Kyle Van Noy will be a game time decision for matchup vs. Bengals

Baltimore Ravens edge rusher Kyle Van Noy will be a game time decision with a groin injury for the matchup against the Bengals

The Baltimore Ravens could be without pass rusher Kyle Van Noy, as the linebacker will be a game-time decision with a groin injury.

Van Noy (groin) was estimated as a limited participant in Monday’s practice, but he was downgraded to a non-participant on Tuesday.

In seven games, with one start, Van Noy has 13 tackles, five sacks, and a forced fumble.

Pro Bowl cornerback Marlon Humphrey is listed as doubtful for Baltimore, while Ronnie Stanley and Trenton Simpson were ruled out.

The Xs and Os with Greg Cosell: Previewing Week 10’s biggest NFL matchups

Texans at Bengals, Commanders at Seahawks, 49ers at Jaguars, Browns at Ravens, Broncos at Bills. Greg Cosell and Doug Farrar discuss Week 10’s biggest matchups.

It’s time for Week 10 of the NFL season, and as always, Greg Cosell of NFL Films and ESPN’s NFL Matchup, and Doug Farrar of Touchdown Wire and the USA Today Sports Media Group, get you ready with tons of tape study and advanced metrics.

This week, Greg and Doug get deep into these games:

Houston Texans at Cincinnati Bengals — How C.J. Stroud’s game is reinforced by intelligent, calculated movement outside the pocket.

Washington Commanders at Seattle Seahawks — How Sam Howell has transcended his offensive line, and why the Seahawks’ blowout loss to the Baltimore Ravens wasn’t Geno Smith’s fault.

San Francisco 49ers at Jacksonville Jaguars — Why the 49ers’ run game and pass defense have each regressed mightily during their three-game losing streak.

Cleveland Browns at Baltimore Ravens — The Browns’ offense will have to deal with a Ravens pass rush that comes at you from everywhere, with multiple effective schemes.

Denver Broncos at Buffalo Bills — Surprisingly, the Broncos’ passing game is looking better lately, while the Bills’ passing game… well, isn’t.

Anatomy of a Play: How the Ravens beat the numbers with their dominant pass rush

The Ravens got a sack against Geno Smith of the Seahawks last Sunday despite a disadvantage in the numbers game. Here’s how it worked.

In their 37-3 Week 9 thrashing of the Seattle Seahawks, the Baltimore Ravens did something a lot of defenses aren’t capable of doing — they got a sack despite the fact that they were two-short in the protection game.

What does that mean? Let’s get into DI Justin Madubuike’s sack of Geno Smith with 4:01 left in the first quarter.

Pre-snap, the Ravens set up in an overload blitz looking very much like what the San Francisco 49ers do a lot – an overload to the defensive right side, and linebacker Roquan Smith playing stand-up 3-tech to the other side.

At the snap, Smith dropped into coverage as Fred Warner often does, and he took away Jaxon Smith-Njigba as the middle hole defender. Linebacker Patrick Queen replaced Smith as a rusher, but he did so stunting to the overload side.

The Seahawks had a seven-man protection with tight end Noah Fant and running back Zach Charbonnet in the backfield. So, it’s five-on-seven in Seattle’s favor, and the Ravens still won. How did this happen? Defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald and outside linebackers coach Chuck Smith drew it up so that undefined pressure (for the offense) removed the numbers advantage.

  • Roquan Smith’s drop had center Evan Brown and right guard Phil Haynes doubling nose tackle Michael Pierce.
  • Queen’s loop around occupied both Charbonnet and Fant.
  • Odafe Oweh and Kyle Van Noy on the edges took tackles Charles Cross and Jason Peters out.
  • That left Justin Madubuike to throw left guard Damien Lewis aside like the proverbial sack of potatoes to get to Geno Smith.

That’s how you win when you’re two guys short in the protection battle.

“They’ve definitely got some good players, but it comes down to us,” Van Noy said after the game. “It’s always on the defense – just all of us being locked in, all of us being on one accord [and] all of us just doing our job to the best of our ability. As long as we communicate … Like I said, the biggest thing for us is communication. When we communicate, [when] we’re lined up and ready, I don’t think anybody can take us.”

Hard to argue the point, and there would be no contrasting voices in Seattle.

In this week’s “Xs and Os with Greg Cosell and Doug Farrar,” the guys got into how the Ravens further mess with protections.

Ravens defense flawless in 37-3 win over Seahawks

With the week 9 victory included, the Baltimore Ravens now rank a No.1 in defensive points allowed per game at 13.8.

Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator Mike MacDonald nullified the Seattle Seahawks pass game Sunday afternoon. With a plethora of dynamic pass rush schemes, quarterback Geno Smith was sacked four times and completed just 13 passes.

Moreover, the Ravens defense surrendered not one single touchdown in week 9. Outside linebacker Kyle Van Noy featured on a few sacks and a strip sack fumble that deflated what little morale the Seahawks were trying to conjure.

With the week 9 victory included, the Baltimore Ravens now rank a No.1 in defensive points allowed per game  at 13.8.  MacDonald has been consistent all year when he gets help from the Ravens running game and his defense is able to get some rest.
