Kyle Seelig, Katie Trace receive OSU’s Big Ten Outstanding Sportsmanship Award

Way to be a great ambassador for Ohio State for both!

Ohio State mens’ tennis player Kyle Seelig and women’s swimming’s Katie Trace have been named as OSU’s Big Ten Outstanding Sportsmanship Award winners for the 2020-2021 season.

One member of each varsity sports team at all 14 Big Ten schools was chosen as a Sportsmanship Award honoree, and two Outstanding Sportsmanship Award winners were then selected from each program. All of the Sportsmanship Award winners have separated themselves through good sportsmanship and ethical behavior. In addition, these honorees “must be in good academic standing and must have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting” according to a release from the school.

Seelig was a three-time first-team All-Big Ten performer and finished his career at Ohio State with 127 singles victories and 46 doubles wins. Off the court, he graduated last May with a degree in child and youth studies along with a minor in human development and family science. This year, he completed his graduate certificate in public management, and through all of that, he was a three-time Big Ten Distinguished Scholar and a five-time OSU Scholar-Athlete.

Trace was a senior member of the 2020-21 Ohio State swimming and diving team that won its second consecutive Big Ten Conference championship in 2021. The team then had its highest finish ever at the NCAA championships, finishing in seventh place as a team. Trace swam on the Big Ten champion 400 medley relay team that set a school record and was the Big Ten runner-up in the 400 individual medley. She also made the finals in the 200 individual medley and the 200 butterfly. She qualified for the NCAA championships in all three of those individual events. At NCAAs, she earned first-team All-America honors in the 400 individual medley and as part of the 800 free relay team.

Congrats to both of these athletes and way to be a great representative of THE Ohio State University.

Ohio State men’s tennis squad named an ITA All-Academic Team

The Ohio State men’s tennis squad was named an ITA All-Academic Team according to a release from the university on Monday.

The Ohio State men’s tennis squad has been recognized as an ITA All-Academic Team per an announcement from the university on Monday.

To be named an ITA All-Academic Team, programs must have a team grade point average of 3.2 or above (on a 4.00 scale), all student-athletes included should be listed on the institutional eligibility form, and all varsity letter winners should be factored into the cumulative team GPA for the current academic year.

In addition to the team recognition, six individuals also received recognition as  ITA Scholar-Athletes. To be named an ITA Scholar-Athlete, the student-athlete must have a grade point average of at least 3.5 (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic year.

Kyle Seelig and Jacob Wareti were named ITA Scholar-Athletes for the third time, Tim Seibert earned the award for the second time, and Andrew Lutschaunig, JJ Mercer, and Robert Cash all claimed their first awards.

The list of academic awards for the tennis program have been impressive and include all of the following:

  • NCAA Public Recognition Award. This was the third year in a row that the program has been recognized and the seventh time overall.
  • ITA All-Academic Team
  • 6 ITA Scholar-Athletes
  • 10 OSU Scholar-Athletes (the entire team). This was the fifth year in a row where 10 or more members of the team have earned that distinction.
  • 5 Academic All-Big Ten honorees (student-athletes must be in their second season at their institution to be considered)
  • Varsity O award for the top small team GPA
