WATCH: Jordan Palmer explains Josh Allen, Kyle Allen dynamic:

Some had and still might be wondering why the Bills have opted to keep Kyle Allen as the main backup option to starting quarterback Josh Allen.

While the Bills could have looked for an outside upgrade, and reportedly did via Trey Lance, noted NFL quarterbacks coach Jordan Palmer said it makes sense to him why the Bills decided to keep their QB room all Allen.

Palmer has famously worked out with numerous quarterbacks that are now in the NFL during their offseasons. Two of them? Josh Allen and Kyle Allen.

Palmer said from his vantage point, he believes in Kyle Allen as a player. In addition, he compared the relationship the two Bills QBs have to a person one he had.

Jordan Palmer previously backed up his brother Carson Palmer. In that scenario, hre said he’d never ever want his brother to get hurt or play poorly… naturally.

But that’s what Palmer sees in the Bills’ duo.

“You have a similar dynamic here. Kyle’s also just a huge fan of his buddy,” Palmer said.

CBS Sports suggest a Carson Wentz addition for the Bills

… Carson Wentz anyone…?

The backup quarterback question is very much… still exactly that for the Buffalo Bills.

Since Kyle Allen signed this offseason, he hasn’t exactly inspired a lot of confidence.

Then when Matt Barkley had a good preseason outing when Allen had a bad one… Barkley then laid a stinker the very next game.

What are the Bills to do? CBS Sports floated a name out there: Carson Wentz.

In naming players who could be surprise cuts during the NFL’s roster cut-down day on Tuesday, a very non-surprising suggestion was on there: Barkley.

If released, Barkley would be among the least surprising players to be let go.

That’s because he has been cut by the Bills in the past… only to be brought back as the third-string QB on the practice squad. That very well could happen again in the coming days.

But then in the CBS Sports explanation, Wentz’s name appears:

On his second stint as Josh Allen’s backup, Barkley and newcomer Kyle Allen have been uneven in their fight for No. 2 duties, and now the former is battling an elbow injury after a four-turnover preseason stinker. Owed just $150,000 guaranteed, the journeyman could easily be swapped out for another last-minute addition (Carson Wentz, anyone?).

Wentz has been a free agent all offseason. The 30-year-old was the second-overall pick at the 2016 NFL draft and previously was a second-team All-Pro (2017).

Since then, it’s been downhill in big part due to injuries. He spent the 2022 season with the Washington Commanders and that didn’t go well.

At one point this offseason, Buffalo had the fourth-best odds to sign Wentz. But could he be a fit with the Bills?

In a way, he could be.

Wentz has some athletic ability and size like starting quarterback Josh Allen. In addition, Buffalo already previously had a top-overall draft selection as Allen’s backup in the past via Mitch Trubisky. Finally, the Bills were also recently connected to Trey Lance, an even more recent top pick still on his rookie deal.

Wentz might be a very cost-efficient roll of the dice. Maybe keep his name in mind in the coming days.

NFL roster cuts: 6 toughest roster decisions for the Bills to make

NFL roster cuts: 6 toughest roster decisions for the #Bills to make:

One of the toughest days around the NFL is roster cut down day.

Sure, teams have 53 roster spots which seems like a lot–But it’s not. Spaces gets very tight, very quickly. It makes some roster decisions very difficult to make.

With that, here are the five toughest cuts the Bills might have to make in 2023 ahead of Tuesday’s 4 p.m. deadline:

Bears vs. Bills: Everything we know about Chicago’s 24-21 loss

The Bears dropped their preseason finale to the Buffalo Bills. Here’s everything we know about the loss.

The 2023 preseason is officially in the books for the Chicago Bears following their 24-21 loss to the Buffalo Bills. The Bears were down from the start after the Bills, with quarterback Josh Allen, took their opening possession 72 yards on 12 plays to get a touchdown. Chicago never led in the game, but did cut the deficit a few times.

The Bears got touchdowns from backup quarterbacks Tyson Bagent and P.J. Walker while Cairo Santos converted all three field goal attempts. Bills backup quarterback Kyle Allen, however, kept the Bears at bay as he led three scoring drives of his own. But the Bears wouldn’t go away easy.

Walker’s touchdown to Robert Burns late in the fourth quarter and a two-point conversion got the Bears within three, but it wasn’t enough as the Bills chewed up clock to ice the game. The Bears finished the preseason 1-2, their first losing preseason since 2019.

Here is everything we know about Chicago’s preseason loss.

#Bills at #Bears: Kyle Allen finds Quintin Morris over the shoulder for TD (video):

While his overall body of work in the preseason has been up and down, it’s hard to say this pass was anything but beautiful from Kyle Allen.

The Bills took a 14-3 lead on the Bears in their preseason finale thanks to this 29-yard pass from Allen to tight end Quintin Morris. Allen put the ball in a perfect position where only Morris could grab it. And he did so in impressive fashion.

WATCH: Bears rookie CB Tyrique Stevenson comes down with INT vs. Bills

The Bears rookie missed out on interception opportunities earlier in the preseason, but not this week.

Last week, Chicago Bears rookie cornerback Tyrique Stevenson let an interception go right through his hands for a touchdown against the Indianapolis Colts. The week before, he missed another one against the Tennessee Titans. He said he wasn’t going to let that happen again and backed that up on Saturday.

In the final preseason game against the Buffalo Bills, Stevenson came away with his first professional interception. On Buffalo’s second possession, backup quarterback Kyle Allen was driving the offense downfield and looked towards the left sideline on a deep pass to Gabe Davis. Stevenson had tight coverage and looked back for the ball just in time to get a pick and stay in bounds at the same time.

Stevenson was drafted by the Bears in the second round out of Miami (FL) and became the favorite to start opposite Jaylon Johnson at the boundary corner position earlier in the summer. He’s had an up-and-down preseason with penalties and missed chances, but he made the most of that opportunity and gave the ball back to the offense.

The turnover allowed Justin Fields and the offense to move downfield, thanks to a huge catch and run by D.J. Moore. The Bears got a field goal out of it and trail 7-3 in the second quarter.

Bills at Bears: 6 storylines to watch for in preseason finale

#Bills at #Bears will conclude the preseason, but there are still plenty of storylines for this week:

Here are six Buffalo Bills storylines to watch for during the lead up to the team’s final preseason matchup against the Chicago Bears on Saturday:

Bills Wire Preseason Week 2 Player of the Game: Justin Shorter

Not a whole lot of candidates this week… but we found one (via

The Buffalo Bills preseason went on the road to play against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Despite losing 27-15 in a poor fashion, a few Bills players had a good game.

We are awarding our second season issue of the Player of the Week Award in 2023 to wide receiver Justin Shorter, who had five catches for 47 yards and a touchdown in the final offensive drive for the Bills:

The Florida product was drafted by Buffalo in the 2023 in the 5th round and was named ‘a steal’ by Touchdown Wire. He was the lone bright spot in the Bills offense, connecting with backup quarterback Kyle Allen  in the second half on multiple short catches and the touchdown strike to the end zone.

Shorter, who is listed on the second team in Bills’ depth chart, had his first catch to convert a third down against Steelers’ CB James Pierre by beating him with a cut inside to move the sticks.

His second was also  won after cutting inside against Steelers’ 3rd string CB Chris Wilcox, taking a physical hit in the middle of the field. He beat Pierre on the outside in the only incompletion Kyle Allen had targeted him on.

During his touchdown winning drive, he used the sidelines well to save time on the clock after the two-minute warning, prior to the touchdown strike. His physicality and technical route-running was clearly evident and can evolve his game plan. We hope he will continue to progress and make an impact in the regular season behind Gabe Davis.

Buffalo will be on the road for their final preseason game, heading to Chicago to play against the Bears next Saturday. After McDermott declared it’s an open competition for the backup QB job last week and Allen performing better than Matt Barkley this week, it will be important to see Shorter have chemistry with both QBs if his snap count increases next week.
