Bears claim former Falcons LB Mykal Walker, waive LB Kuony Deng

Mykal Walker had over 100 tackles last for the Falcons and now joins the Bears.

The Chicago Bears are making moves at the linebacker position. On Monday afternoon, the team announced they claimed former Atlanta Falcons linebacker Mykal Walker off waivers and waived linebacker Kuony Deng in a corresponding move.

Walker was selected in the fourth round of the 2020 NFL Draft by the Falcons out of Fresno State, where he rose from a role player to a starter by his third season. In 2022, Walker started 12 games for the Falcons, where he totaled 107 tackles (four for a loss), one sack, two interceptions, and six passes defensed.

Atlanta waived Walker on Sunday in a bit of a surprise move. The Bears are first on the waiver priority list and put in a claim for Walker, taking advantage of an opportunity to bolster their linebacking corps.

With Walker joining the team, the Bears opted to waive Deng, a reserve who has yet to appear in a regular season game. Coincidentally, Deng signed with the Bears late in the 2022 season after spending much of the year with the Falcons on the practice squad.

The Chicago Bears are bringing in defensive help ahead of training camp, but it’s not at the edge rusher position as many expected.

According to KPRC reporter and NFL insider Aaron Wilson, the Bears are signing former Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker Buddy Johnson to a deal.

Johnson was selected by the Steelers in the fourth round of the 2021 NFL Draft out of Texas A&M. He played in just four games his rookie season, primarily on special teams. He totaled just two tackles.

Johnson couldn’t climb the depth chart entering his second season in Steelers camp and was waived during roster cutdowns. He signed with the San Francisco 49ers practice squad prior to the 2022 season and now comes to the Bears in an attempt to restart his career.

For weeks, a defensive signing was expected by the Bears, but many assumed it would be to address edge rusher, not inside linebacker. Johnson will compete with reserve players such as Sterling Weatherford, DeMarquis Gates, and Kuony Deng for a roster spot when training camp practices get underway this Wednesday.

Seahawks work out 4 more free agent linebackers

The Seattle Seahawks have linebacker problems.

The Seattle Seahawks have linebacker problems, to put it mildly. Starting inside linebackers Cody Barton and Jordyn Brooks have both struggled so far this season and Seattle can’t seem to find what they’re looking for in regard to backups. As for the OLB rotation, Uchenna Nwosu is thriving and we named him our first-quarter defensive MVP, but nobody else is stepping up. On Thursday they brought in yet another group of free agents at this position for work outs. As of yet none of them have been reported to be signing.

Here’s a quick list of who they brought in.
