Sixers vs. Mavericks preview: how to watch the final scrimmage game

The Philadelphia 76ers take on the Dallas Mavericks in their final scrimmage game in Orlando.

The Philadelphia 76ers are inside the bubble in Orlando to finish up the 2019-20 season, but first, they need to get some scrimmage games in to get back in the swing of things. They have played two of those three scrimmage games and they will finish off their final one on Tuesday against the Dallas Mavericks.

Those Mavericks possess one of the top talents in the league in Luka Doncic and one of the top big men in Kristaps Porzingis and they re fighting to hold on to a final playoff spot out West. They are currently the 7 seed heading into the restart and should offer the Sixers a challenge in this final scrimmage game.

With that said, let’s get into the preview to this one:

How to watch Sixers vs. Mavericks

  • Date: Tuesday, July 28
  • Time: 8:30 p.m. EST
  • Location: HP Field House Orlando, FL
  • TV: NBC Sports Philadelphia+

Storylines

Good luck trying to stop Ben Simmons

With his new move over to the power forward spot, Ben Simmons has been tough to stop in Orlando. He has been getting to the rim with ease as it has allowed him to play a little more freely and not have too much responsibility and the team has been more effective on offense. That means trouble for the rest of the league and Al Horford hopes they are ready for it.

“Ben is just being Ben,” said Horford. “He just sets the tone for us. It’s like ‘good luck’ getting in front of him, trying to contain him, or stop him in transition. He’s such a big body, so fast, explosive. He just knows how to play. He has a really good feel for the game.”

Sixers have faith in Horford

Horford has had an up and down first season in Philadelphia. He has struggled to really find his niche and his role on the offensive end of the floor and the Sixers are now moving him to a bench role. Still, the Sixers believe in him to make a big impact once the playoffs begin. He has been through too much and Shake Milton believes in his veteran.

“Al’s a leader. We’ve got faith in Al, it was huge to see him knock down all those threes and hopefully, we’ll keep finding him and letting them fly,” said Milton. “He’s been great and he’s been a presence for us and we’re definitely going to need him.”

Prediction

As mentioned in the first two scrimmage preview, this is not a prediction that will go too deep into everything. This is another game that truly does not count and it is a game to get ready for Saturday’s restart opener. What Sixers fans should look for is continuity. They should hope the team is really in sync and getting into the season restart playing good basketball. The final score does not matter.

Pick: Fun! Basketball is back.

LeBron asks for justice for Breonna Taylor, discusses racial profiling after scrimmage

LeBron James joined a chorus of NBA players using their media press conferences as an opportunity to ask for justice for Breonna Taylor.

The Los Angeles Lakers played their first game against another team since March 10 on Thursday evening, but star player LeBron James immediately shifted the focus from the team’s first organized action against the Dallas Mavericks, to the ongoing call from NBA players who are asking for justice in the death of Breonna Taylor.

Before answering questions about their scrimmage, which James said he was excited for earlier in the day, he wanted to make sure that it was clear he and other players want the policeman who shot and killed Taylor arrested. James also used the media session to discuss his willingness to speak out on issues he feels knowledgable about, particularly what it’s like to be discriminated against as Black man in America.

James held court, discussing racial injustice in the United States for almost 15 minutes. The Boston Globe’s Gary Washburn uploaded all of the videos on YouTube.

James played 15 minutes, had 12 points and five assists in the scrimmage on Thursday, but by far his most important action was continuing the call from several other NBA players, such as Philadelphia’s Tobias Harris, Portland’s CJ McCollum and even his teammate Alex Caruso, in demanding justice for Taylor and asking Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron to take action in the case.

There have been no arrests made in Taylor’s death and only one of the officers has been let go by the Louisville Police Department.

Lakers basketball is back: How to watch Thursday scrimmage vs. Mavs

The Los Angeles Lakers are back on a television near you and they’ll face one of the most exciting young teams in the league.

Los Angeles Lakers basketball is back and even though the games don’t count, you will be able to watch the Lakers first action against another NBA team when they scrimmage against Luka Doncic and the Dallas Mavericks on Thursday afternoon.

How To Watch

Time: 4 p.m. Pacific/7 p.m. Eastern

Channel: Spectrum SportsNet (In local Lakers television area), NBATV and NBA League Pass

The Lakers had an inter-squad scrimmage on Tuesday but they will finally get their first test against another NBA team, and a good one at that, in the Mavericks. Lakers head coach Frank Vogel said he did not envision his star players LeBron James and Anthony Davis playing in every scrimmage game, so we don’t know who exactly will play for the Lakers or Mavericks until closer to game time.

Each of the 22 teams at the NBA Restart has three scrimmages against teams that they won’t be playing in their eight seeding games, which will lead into the playoffs.

Where do Rudy Gobert, Donovan Mitchell rank among most prolific lob duos?

As the Utah Jazz now resume basketball activities, there are major issues they need to fix regarding stars Rudy Gobert and Donovan Mitchell.

As the Utah Jazz now resume basketball activities, there are major issues they need to fix regarding stars Rudy Gobert and Donovan Mitchell.

After so much time off due to the coronavirus pandemic, there will be a lot to iron out for all rosters. But the recent gap also exposed some harsh truths about the two best players on the Jazz.

In a recent story, Tim MacMahon reported that Gobert feels he should receive more lobs from Mitchell (via ESPN):

“Gobert rarely hesitates to let teammates know if they miss him when he is open around the rim. He’ll occasionally point up during play in animated fashion, sometimes as he is running back on defense, to note that a lob should have been thrown …  Gobert knows his lobbying for lobs wears on teammates to the point of being counterproductive, like the wide receiver who gripes at the quarterback after every play when a pass isn’t thrown his way, regardless of the pass rush.”

Gobert led all NBA players with 306 dunks recorded last season, according to Basketball-Reference. But even when including alley-oops layups, the big man paired with Mitchell for only 28 lob connections during their 2018-19 campaign.

Considering that Gobert attempted 125 alley-oops in 2018-19 (17.6 percent of his total attempts from the field), this is certainly a major offensive focal point for the two-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year.

As such, McMahon continued, the two players have specifically worked on their “lob chemistry” in individualized practice sessions to further avoid the blunders like the one seen above during their game against Denver back in January:

“Utah coach Quin Snyder and his staff have attempted to help facilitate that trust, especially between Mitchell and Gobert. That duo have had dozens of two-man workouts under the watch of coaches, with a focus on ironing out intricacies of their pick-and-roll partnership and lob chemistry. They also occasionally join coaches – usually some combination of Snyder, Jensen and Johnnie Bryant, the assistant who works most with Mitchell – for small-group film sessions at the team’s facility.”

Gobert made 16 alley-oops following passes from Mitchell, per NBA.com. This accounted for 4.5 percent of his total field goal count, down from 5.9 percent last season. This would average out to approximately 0.36 connections per 36 minutes when looking at their total time spent (1607 minutes) on the court together, down from 0.48 last season.

For a better understanding of how that compares to other lob threats around the league, we looked at the top combinations on this play type. Brooklyn’s Spencer Dinwiddie assisted DeAndre Jordan on 46 alley-oop opportunities this season. This means they averaged 2.76 alley-oops per 36 minutes shared (599 minutes) on the floor.

While these two players are no longer on the same roster, Houston’s James Harden and former teammate Clint Capela were also successful on 46 of their alley-oop possessions. Capela, now on the Atlanta Hawks, was able to catch 1.53 alley-oops per 36 minutes that he played alongside Harden (1,082) in 2019-20.

Other prolific pairings in the NBA this season include Dinwiddie-to-Jarrett Allen (40), Trae Young-to-John Collins (36), LeBron James-to-Anthony Davis (34), Chris Paul-to-Nerlens Noel (33) and Elfrid Payton-to-Mitchell Robinson (33).

The data makes it clear that there is certainly room for more lob connections between the two players. However, considering how rare these opportunities are even for the most prolific duo, perhaps there are other aspects of offense to worry about in Utah.

HoopsHype’s Alberto de Roa contributed research to this report.

Dallas Mavericks NBA Championship odds, picks and best bets

Assessing the betting odds and chances of Dallas Mavericks winning the Western Conference and the 2019-20 NBA Championship, with picks and best bets.

The Dallas Mavericks were seventh in the Western Conference with a record of 40-27 when the 2019-20 NBA season was suspended. Below, we look at the BetMGM betting odds of the Mavericks winning the NBA Championship once play resumes with a 22-team format in Orlando, Fla., later this summer.

Dallas Mavericks season recap

Dallas has one of the bright, young stars in the league in PG Luka Doncic, who was averaging 28.7 points, 9.3 rebounds and 8.7 assists per game before the season was suspended. He is joined by C Kristaps Porzingas, averaging 19.2 points and 9.5 rebounds per contest.

The Mavs were better on the road (21-12) than at home (19-15), but they dominated their division, going 10-3 against Southwest Division rivals.

Dallas was also one of the best teams in the league against the spread. The Mavericks are tied for the seventh-best ATS record in the NBA at 35-29-3. Meanwhile, their 40-27 Over/Under mark is tied for the third-best Over record this season.

Dallas is a long shot to win the NBA title at +3000. The Mavericks are solid and would do well against any team in the Eastern Conference. The problem is their road to the NBA Finals is just too hard. Betting against anyone other than the Los Angeles Lakers (+250) or Los Angeles Clippers (+325) in the West – barring an injury to a key player seems like a waste.

Should you bet on the Mavs to win the title? NO.

Dallas Mavericks Western Conference odds

To win the Western Conference, the Mavs are also a long shot at +1800 behind five other teams. As mentioned previously, the issue with the Mavs isn’t their NBA Finals odds, it’s the fact they have to come out of the West. Betting on the Mavs to win the West is no better than betting on them to win the NBA title. AVOID betting on Dallas here, too.

2015 NBA re-draft: Sixers select Kristaps Porzingis over Jahlil Okafor

In this re-draft of the 2015 NBA Draft, the Philadelphia 76ers select Kristaps Porzingis over Jahlil Okafor.

The 2015 NBA Draft was an important one for the Sixers. They needed to find a piece to really push their rebuild forward. They did select Joel Embiid in 2014, but due to his foot injury, they had yet to see what he could really do. So, with the third pick in 2015, they went with another big man.

It came down to two talented bigs in Jahlil Okafor and Kristaps Porzingis with the third pick and the Sixers selected Okafor with Porzingis going to the New York Knicks with the next pick. Okafor had a solid rookie season averaging 17.5 points and 7.0 rebounds, but Porzingis displayed an all-around game that was perfect for the modern game and he would have a better rookie season in New York.

Okafor, meanwhile, has been ranked one of the biggest busts of the 2010’s decade.

The Sixers have a chance to correct that mistake in a re-draft done by Bleacher Report. They have the Sixers selecting Porzingis over Okafor.

B/R:

At his best, Porzingis has a strong case to be the best player in the 2015 draft. What drops him: consistency and injury concerns. Even beyond the torn ACL that kept him out most of the 2017-18 season and all of the 2018-19 season, he’s missed games throughout his career with other injuries and hasn’t played more than 70 games in a season since his rookie year with the Knicks.

Still, a 7’3″ center who can shoot threes and protect the rim is a rare commodity. Before his 2018 knee injury, Porzingis was having a career year, shooting 39.5 percent from three and averaging career highs of 22.7 points and 2.4 blocks per game.

During his season on the sidelines, Porzingis requested a trade from New York, disagreeing with the direction of the organization, and was dealt at the 2019 deadline to the Dallas Mavericks. His first season in Dallas was up-and-down as he worked his way back from the knee injury, but it’s clear he still has the potential to be a dynamic second option next to fellow Euro star Luka Doncic.

As for Okafor, they have him going 25 to the Portland Trail Blazers in the re-draft. It’s not that he’s a bad player or anything, but his game does not fit in the modern era. He is more of a classic big man when the league is more fit for a guy like Porzingis. [lawrence-related id=30695,30684,30677]

Prediction

Nuggets 122, Mavericks 104

Moneyline (ML)

These teams have played twice already this season and each game has been decided by a possession with the Nuggets the most recent meeting, 107-106, Jan. 8. The Mavericks were without defensive anchor, Kristaps Porzingis, and Nikola Jokic took advantage to the tune of 33 points on 12-of-20 shooting. That’s a bad sign for Dallas with Porzingis out again Wednesday. In their first meeting Oct. 29, Dallas had nine players score double figures (none more than 14) en route to a 109-106 victory in Denver.

The Nuggets are far healthier at the moment — no one from the Nuggets’ regular rotation is out — and beside the injuries above, the Mavericks have seen Luka Doncic miss games recently. Denver gives up the fourth-fewest points per game to point guards and Doncic has scored 21.5 PPG in four career games against the Nuggets. Doncic has needed to work for his 20+ points, shooting just .392 from the field and .200 from 3-point land against Denver.

LIKE the NUGGETS -143.

New to sports betting? Bet $143 on the Nuggets -143 and earn a $100 profit if they beat the Mavericks.

Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

Since I like the Nuggets on the moneyline, I’ll LEAN toward the NUGGETS -2.5 (-110). It should be an either-or situation in terms of which bet to play; I don’t think you should bet both the moneyline and spread.

Anywho, somehow Dallas is worse ATS at home versus winning teams (3-9) then Denver is on the road against winning teams (5-7-1). The Mavericks lost straight up and against the spread in both games they were home dogs in but the Nuggets is only 7-10-1 ATS as a road favorite this season. The standout trend for me in the Mavericks-Nuggets matchup is Denver’s 6-3 ATS record when laying 1-2.5 points and Dallas’ 1-5 ATS mark when getting that many points.

Over/Under (O/U)

Denver likes to slow the game down and play through their All-Star big man, Jokic. The Nuggets are ranked 29th in pace of play, which is the main reason their offense is ranked just 20th in points per game. However, they are seventh in offensive rating and sixth in field-goal percentage, and I think they’ll execute against the Mavericks, pushing the game OVER 220.5 (-106).

Indiana Pacers at Dallas Mavericks odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Sunday’s Indiana Pacers at Dallas Mavericks sports betting odds, with NBA matchup analysis and picks.

The Indiana Pacers (38-25) heads to Texas Sunday to play the Dallas Mavericks (39-25) at the American Airlines Center at 7:00 p.m. ET. We analyze the Pacers-Mavericks odds and lines, with NBA betting advice and tips around the matchup.

Prediction

Mavericks 124, Pacers 101

Moneyline (ML)

The Mavericks (-223) trampled the Memphis Grizzlies, 121-96, on Friday. Kristaps Porzingis continued his hot play against Memphis, scoring 26 points and grabbing 11 boards — his fifth straight double-double. The Pacers (+180) bounced back from Wednesday’s 119-100 loss at Milwaukee by beating the Chicago Bulls, 108-102, at home two nights later. Sunday’s game will conclude a five-game road trip for the Pacers. Dallas prevailed in the first meeting of these two clubs, 112-103 at Indiana Feb. 3. And that was despite Luka Doncic sitting out for Dallas and Oladipo playing in his third game back from injury that cost him more than a calendar year.

Given the Pacers’ injury issues, my recommendation is to PASS on the moneyline here. The plus-money line for the playoff-bound Pacers is juicy but they could be without three starters. Betting heavy favorites such as the Mavericks is a bad ROI for the more enthusiastic gambler.

New to sports betting? A $100 bet on the Mavericks to win outright would return a profit of $44.84 if successful. Betting $100 on the Pacers to win outright would return a $180 profit if successful.

Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

Don’t overthink this one and bet MAVERICKS -5.5 (-106). If the Pacers were fully healthy we’d definitely be looking to play them here since there are many favorable Indiana trends. Trends that aren’t so Pacers-friendly:  Indiana is 1-5 ATS in their last six games against Dallas and 1-4 ATS in its last five games as an underdog.

Over/Under (O/U)

Both teams have shown a propensity to send their games Over the projected total, albeit for different reasons. The Pacers have an O/U record of 33-29-1 this season and I get the feeling that’s mostly due to the public’s perception of Indiana being a slower-paced, defensive team. The Mavericks’ O/U record is 39-25 and that’s because they are one of the better offensive teams in the NBA. They are ranked first in offensive rating, third in points per game and second in 3-pointers attempted per game. Also, the Over is 5-1 in the last six meetings in Dallas and their combined O/U record in non-conference games is 29-19 this season.

BET OVER 217.5.

Prediction

Mavericks 131, Hawks 118

Moneyline (ML)

NO PLAY. Atlanta PG Trae Young is coming off a career-high 50-point performance in a Thursday’s 129-124 home win against the Miami Heat. The Mavericks started their post-All-Star Break campaign off on the right note, winning at Orlando Magic 122-106 Friday.  Dallas smoked Atlanta in the first meeting at home 123-100 Feb. 1, and that was without its top two leading scorers in SG Luka Doncic and PF Kristaps Porzingis. I am ruling out a Hawks +200 upset because of their Saturday splits. Atlanta is 2-7 on Saturdays, losing by an average score of 126-105, whereas Dallas has a 7-3 record on Saturdays, winning by an average score of 121-108. However, the poor value of Mavericks -250 steers me away from wagering on them. PASS.

Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

Honestly, one can make a great argument for both of these teams covering. The Hawks +6.5 (-121) are 16-10-1 ATS in home games, but the MAVERICKS -6.5 (+100) are 18-6-2 ATS in road games. Plus, Atlanta is 13-6 ATS at home against teams above .500; Dallas is 9-2-1 ATS on the road against teams below. 500. The Hawks are 1-5 ATS in their last six games following a straight-up win, but the Mavericks are 1-5 ATS in the last six meetings in Atlanta and are 2-10 ATS in the last 12 meetings.

I lean MAVERICKS -6.5 (+100because of the Saturday splits, the first game of the season and Dallas just being a much better team this year.

Over/Under (O/U)

For all the noise about the Hawks’ offensive proclivity, they are last in the NBA in 3-point percentage and 23rd in field-goal percentage. Also, the Under is 9-3 in the last 12 meetings. But Dallas has the highest percentage of Overs this season and Atlanta has the fourth highest. Their combined O/U record is a staggering 60-43 for the season. Let’s root for a fun game and bet OVER 239.5 (-121). There should be Atlanta-bred rappers and celebrities in attendance, plus if Offset and Cardi B are there maybe Luka puts on a show for his crush.

Kristaps Porzingis is a big Redskins fan

The Redskins have a new celebrity fan.

Here’s a new one — Dallas Mavericks star Kristaps Porzingis is a big fan of the Washington Redskins.

So much so, Porzingis was recently at a Washington Wizards game with Redskins quarterback Dwayne Haskins.

Porzingis explained why he’s a fan, per NBC Sports’ Chase Hughes:

“One of our assistant coaches, Darrell Armstrong, he’s a diehard Redskins fan. We are pretty close and he kind of brought me in. I was a free agent and didn’t really follow football that much. There are obviously guys talking in the locker room all the time, so I was like ‘I’ve gotta get into football a little bit. I was a free agent and D.A. made me a Redskins fan.”

Simple but effective, right?

Given the problems the Redskins have had with fans lately — especially in the attendance numbers — it sure doesn’t hurt to have someone of his stature publicly backing the team.

Here are a few of the posts chronicling the recent revelation.
