Kliff Kingsbury interviewing for Texans’ OC job

Kingsbury, after taking time off after the season following his firing, could join DeMeco Ryans’ staff with the Texans.

Kliff Kingsbury, fired by the Arizona Cardinals after their 4-13 2022 season, could be back in the NFL this year.

According to ESPN’s Dan Graziano, Kingsbury was in Houston on Friday interviewing for the Houston Texans’ vacant offensive coordinator position.

Former San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans is the Texans’ new head coach.

If Kingsbury were to get the job, it would give Ryans and the Texans two coordinators from the Cardinals.

Matt Burke, who was the Cardinals’ defensive line coach in 2022, is expected to be the Texans’ defensive coordinator.

Kingsbury, following his firing, went to Thailand to take some time off. He initially told teams he was not interested in interviewing for OC jobs. But after some reflection, he knew he wanted to get back into coaching in the NFL but didn’t know whether to wait a year.

It appears that he is interested in returning now.

The Texans have the second overall pick in the 2023 NFL draft and are expected to select a quarterback. Kingsbury would again be able to work with and develop a young, talented quarterback like he did with Kyler Murray from 2019-2022.

Texans in discussions with former Cardinals coach Kliff Kingsbury for offensive coordinator

The Houston Texans are in talks with former Arizona Cardinals coach Kliff Kingsbury for their offensive coordinator position.

The Houston Texans may not be done picking through the remnants of the Arizona Cardinals’ coaching staff to fill coordinator roles.

According to Dan Graziano from ESPN, the Texans are in discussions with former Cardinals coach Kliff Kingsbury for a job on new coach DeMeco Ryans’ staff. Kingsbury, who is in Houston for the talks, would take the role of offensive coordinator.

Kingsbury’s only NFL experience was as the Cardinals coach from 2019-22. Arizona went 28-37-1 in his four seasons with the NFC West club and reached the playoffs once in the 2021 NFC wild-card.

The former New Braunfels High School and Texas Tech product was with the Houston Cougars in a variety of offensive roles from 2008-11. In 2012, Kingsbury became the offensive coordinator under Kevin Sumlin at Texas A&M. From 2013-18, Kingsbury was the head football coach at his alma mater.

NFC West Watch: Is Kyler Murray the reason Cards haven’t found a coach?

The Cardinals remain without a coach, and there could be a reason why.

Being an NFL head coach is one of the most rare professions on the planet. There’s only 32 of them, after all. So when one becomes available, you’d assume there’d be a line out the door and around the block of candidates vying for the position. Well, this may not be the case in Arizona.

Following a disastrous 4-13 season, the Arizona Cardinals fired head coach Kliff Kingsbury in early January. However, they have failed to find a successor who can improve upon his 28-37-1 record. The Cardinals remain without a coach, and there could be a reason why. According to Tony Pauline of Pro Football Network, Kyler Murray could be the hold up.

Kyler Murray, when healthy, is a dynamic athlete. Someone who offensive coaches should theoretically love to get their hands on. But for now, Murray remains a bit of an albatross… especially his five-year, $230 million dollar contract he signed in August.

It’s likely not just the money scaring candidates away, it’s Murray’s attitude. Murray has been drama ever since arriving in the Valley of the Sun. Most notably, concerns from the Cardinals involving his worth ethic and leadership. Infamously, the Cardinals included a “study” clause in his contract, mandating at least four hours of film study a week.

Making matters worse, Murray tore his ACL in Week 14 this past season. Whoever the Cardinals eventually hire will have quite the challenge ahead of them.

Top 5 candidates to become the new Alabama OC

Here are five names Nick Saban and the Crimson Tide should explore for the open offensive coordinator job.

One of the most impressive things about Nick Saban’s tenure as head coach of the Alabama Crimson Tide is that he has continued to win despite the constant turnover of coordinators. In conclusion of the 2022 season, the Crimson Tide must replace both offensive and defensive coordinators after losing Bill O’Brien to the New England Patriots and Pete Golding to Ole Miss.

Tuscaloosa has been fortunate enough to have had some of the most talented play callers in college football over the last few years such as Brian Daboll, Lane Kiffin, Steve Sarkisian, Mike Locksley and others. It is a highly-coveted position in the college football world and Saban will do his due diligence in this search.

Here are the top five coordinators that would be the best fit for the position.

Former USC offensive coordinator might join Nick Saban at Alabama

Where will Kliff Kingsbury coach in 2023? How should USC honor Charles White? Let’s open up the Trojan football notebook and dive into several topics.

Kliff Kingsbury was the offensive coordinator for USC under Clay Helton and former athletic director Lynn Swann … for a few minutes.

Kingsbury flew to Arizona to don some red wings with the Cardinals before he ever called a play for the Trojans. The inability to actually retain Kingsbury after hiring him was a reflection of the extent to which the USC program suffered under the previous regime, before new AD Mike Bohn came to Los Angeles. Keep in mind that USC reached New Year’s Six bowls in 2016 and 2017 because of Sam Darnold. The Trojans won the Pac-12 championship in 2017. Even then — in spite of those accomplishments — Kingsbury didn’t view USC as a place he had to stay, not even for one year.

Now Kingsbury is a free agent in the coaching world. He will get a fat check from the Cardinals for the next several years, so he might just try to sit on a hammock and relax in 2023 and come back fresh for 2024. However, if he wants to coach somewhere, he will certainly have some options.

Let’s look at Kliff Kingsbury’s coaching options and then move to a discussion of various ways USC can honor Charles White this season. It’s a USC and college football offseason notebook.

Let’s dive in:

Kliff Kingsbury weighing options but wants to coach in NFL again

Kingsbury remains in Thailand but is mulling return to the NFL this year.

After the Arizona Cardinals fired Kliff Kingsbury from his job as head coach, he bought a one-way ticket to Thailand to get away and figure things out. He even respectfully told some NFL teams he wasn’t interested in their offensive coordinator jobs right now.

After some out out of the country and relaxing with his girlfriend, Kingsbury is weighing his options.

The Score’s Jordan Schultz appeared on the Pat McAfee Show and said he spoke with Kingsbury for about a half hour.

“There’s no question that Kingsbury wants to coach again, specifically in the NFL — not in college,” Schultz said, “but he’s trying to figure out his options. Does it mean sitting out a year and coming back in 2024 or does he want to just come back in ’23 when the iron is hot? And that is the big decision he has to make.”

There are currently 10 teams seeking offensive coordinators.

Kingsbury told Schultz he didn’t know how long he was going to stay in Thailand. It is the first time he hasn’t had anything not to do following a football season since he started playing and coaching football.

It sounds like it is possible that we will see Kingsbury in the NFL this season. If not, it will happen not long after that.

Kliff Kingsbury hilariously chooses vacationing in Thailand over NFL coaching interviews, per report

Vacation vibes abound.

Former Arizona Cardinals head coach Kliff Kingsbury looks like he won’t be returning to coaching anytime soon.

Per NFL reporter/analyst Peter Schrager, Kingsbury is reportedly telling teams that he won’t be fielding any interviews for vacant offensive coordinator positions at the moment for a pretty understandable reasons.

Kingsbury has reportedly bought a one-way ticket to Thailand and will be vacationing for the time being.

The Cardinals owe Kingsbury a ton of money after he signed an extension on his contract through 2027, so it looks like he’s going to use some of that money on a scenic getaway. Can you blame him?

Kingsbury will likely coach again in the NFL if he wants to, and he could probably land a head coaching gig at the collegiate level, too. He’s still one of the more respected coaching minds of his generation, even if his time with Arizona ended on a sour note.

However, for now, it looks like Kingsbury has entered vacation mode and has no return flight booked to either the coaching ranks or the United States.

Kliff Kingsbury turning down NFL OC jobs right now

Several teams have contacted Kingsbury about their OC jobs. He is politely declining them right now.

The Arizona Cardinals fired Kliff Kingsbury as head coach after the season ended and the team finished 4-13 and lost their final seven games. He had five years remaining on his contract after signing an extension last offseason.

There is interest in him around the league as an offensive coordinator.

He is not interested at the moment.

According to FOX Sports’ Peter Schrager, several teams have reached out to him about their offensive coordinator vacancies. He has respectfully told teams he is not interested right now and is currently out of the country.

Schrager says Kingsbury bought a one-way ticket to Thailand.

It sounds like he will take some time off, perhaps this next year, before deciding to seek his next job.

Patriots will start interviewing ‘offensive coordinator candidates’ next week

The Patriots will start the interview process for the next “offensive coordinator” next week.

The New England Patriots have announced they will begin the process of interviewing “offensive coordinator candidates” next week.

Yes, you read that right—offensive coordinator candidates.

The Patriots haven’t had a real offensive coordinator since losing Josh McDaniels to the Las Vegas Raiders in the 2022 offseason. Matt Patricia and Joe Judge split the offensive play-calling duties during the preseason before Patricia ultimately won the job.

The offense sputtered, Mac Jones regressed at quarterback and the Patriots finished with an 8-9 record and missed the playoffs. Given the amount of times the word “change” has been thrown around regarding the Patriots, it’s no surprise they’re trying to get back to a more conventional way of doing things.

Alabama offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien is a name that should immediately shoot to the top of the list of possible candidates. Former Arizona Cardinals head coach Kliff Kingsbury would also be an intriguing option. Or, the Patriots also have the option of keeping things in-house and promoting a younger prospect like tight ends coach Nick Caley.

Regardless of the options, the most important thing is the team putting the mess that was the 2022 season in the rearview and moving on to greener pastures in 2023.

Patriots have ‘done their research’ on possible Matt Patricia replacement

The Patriots are reportedly exploring options outside of Matt Patricia.

The New England Patriots are already looking towards the 2023 season, starting at the offensive play-caller position.

Instead of making a legitimate offensive coordinator hire, following the exit of Josh McDaniels, coach Bill Belichick threw an offensive play-calling sheet in former defensive coordinator Matt Patricia’s hands and went about business as usual.

Well, that obviously didn’t work in a year where the offense completely imploded and second-year quarterback Mac Jones suffered a serious regression.

When naming off possible offensive coordinator candidates for the Patriots, Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer reported the Patriots had already “done their research” on recently fired Arizona Cardinals head coach Kliff Kingsbury.

“The Patriots have done their research on Kliff Kingsbury,” said Breer, via NBC Sports Boston. “I don’t know if Kliff Kingsbury is even going to be available, I don’t know if Kliff Kingsbury’s even going to want to coach if he’s fired in Arizona, but I do think he’s somebody the Patriots would look at as far as if you’re looking at somebody who might be able to move things forward a little bit and has different ideas to inject into what you’re doing.

“I know things haven’t been perfect in Arizona, but one thing defensive coaches have told me consistently over the last couple of years is because it’s so outside of the norm, Kingsbury’s offense might be the most difficult to prepare for in the entire NFL. So that would be one name to put on your radar if the O’Brien thing doesn’t happen.”

It would be even better if Kingsbury could do the Patriots a solid and bring All-Pro receiver DeAndre Hopkins with him as well.

If that is at all possible, you better believe the offensive guru would jump to the top of the list of fan-favorite candidates to join New England. But honestly, at this point, any legitimate offensive play-caller will do after the ugly year the team had offensively.

That’s a train wreck no one ever wants to experience again.
