Alabama football officially unveils Kane Wommack as defensive coordinator

Alabama football officially unveils new DC on X

It has only been 40 days since [autotag]Kalen DeBoer[/autotag] accepted the position as head coach of the Alabama Crimson Tide, but it feels like a lifetime has passed. From the initial shock of [autotag]Nick Saban’s[/autotag] retirement to the coaching search to hiring DeBoer to the transfer portal, there have been so many changes and moving parts to the football program. Now, with the dust settled, I think we can all sit back and agree that things turned out nearly as well as they possibly could have considering the loss of the greatest coach of all time.

On top of having to retain and fill out a roster, DeBoer has had to essentially build a brand new staff in Tuscaloosa. It initially appeared as if OC Ryan Grubb would be joining DeBoer in Tuscaloosa, however, he ended up as OC of the Seattle Seahawks.

On the defensive side of the ball, Alabama football officially unveiled [autotag]Kane Wommack[/autotag] as the defensive coordinator on X. Wommack has spent the past three season as the head coach of South Alabama where he posted a record of 22-16. Personally, I think it is an outstanding fit for the Tide and it certainly helps to have someone who’s spent time in the state. As well as being the DC, Wommack will also serve as the Linebackers coach.

Alabama commit Jaylen Mbakwe says five-star WR Ryan Williams is a ‘lock’ to commit to the Crimson Tide

Alabama commit says that the Tide are a ‘lock’ to land five-star WR Ryan Williams

Following [autotag]Nick Saban’s[/autotag] shocking retirement, the past 12 days have been filled with decommitments and players entering the transfer portal. New head coach [autotag]Kalen DeBoer[/autotag] has done everything possible to keep the roster and recruits intact as much as possible, but it’s like trying to cover a gunshot wound with a band aid.

Fortunately, the worst of it has passed and DeBoer is growing into the role. He has done an exceptional job filling out the coaching staff moving forward and has a great foundation for a roster. There is still plenty of work to do on the recruiting trail and in the portal, but things are moving in the right direction.

Five-star wide receiver [autotag]Ryan Williams[/autotag] de-committed from the Tide following Saban’s retirement, but he certainly has not ruled Alabama out. Williams was back in Tuscaloosa over the weekend for a surprise visit and apparently it was a great trip for both parties. So much so that Alabama CB commit [autotag]Jaylen Mbakwe[/autotag], who was also in town for the weekend, said that Williams is a “lock” to commit to the Tide.

Williams is the No. 9 player in the 2024 recruiting cycle and the No. 4 WR in the class. Given the lack of experience at the WR position on the Tide’s depth chart, Williams will have a chance to compete for the Tide’s WR1 position as a true freshman. A lot of people have pointed out strong similarities between the recruitments of Williams and Julio Jones.

LOOK: Alabama fans swarm Kalen DeBoer as he arrives in Tuscaloosa

The Alabama Crimson Tide made the biggest hire of this coaching cycle when they landed Washington’s [autotag]Kalen DeBoer[/autotag] to fill the vacancy left by [autotag]Nick Saban[/autotag]. DeBoer has won everywhere he has been and is coming off a national championship appearance with the Huskies.

The fan base has responded incredibly well to DeBoer and seems to be all in on Saban’s successor.

The deal became official Friday afternoon. Within hours, DeBoer left Seattle for Tuscaloosa and arrived at 8:30 p.m. CT to a swarm of Alabama fans at the airport. The Crimson Tide faithful showed out: The crowd looked to be in the thousands. DeBoer spent a quick moment greeting the fans before he and athletic director Greg Byrne headed to Mal Moore Athletic Facility to meet with the team. His first task as the new man of the Crimson Tide will be recruiting and retaining the players currently on the roster

Jalen Milroe was one of the players seen walking into the facility screaming “Roll Tide.” After the meeting, players reportedly were yelling Roll Tide back to the fans with a strong sense of optimism.

Top 5 candidates to become the new Alabama OC

Here are five names Nick Saban and the Crimson Tide should explore for the open offensive coordinator job.

One of the most impressive things about Nick Saban’s tenure as head coach of the Alabama Crimson Tide is that he has continued to win despite the constant turnover of coordinators. In conclusion of the 2022 season, the Crimson Tide must replace both offensive and defensive coordinators after losing Bill O’Brien to the New England Patriots and Pete Golding to Ole Miss.

Tuscaloosa has been fortunate enough to have had some of the most talented play callers in college football over the last few years such as Brian Daboll, Lane Kiffin, Steve Sarkisian, Mike Locksley and others. It is a highly-coveted position in the college football world and Saban will do his due diligence in this search.

Here are the top five coordinators that would be the best fit for the position.

Alabama will take the podium on July 19.
