Georgia overturns PFL result after Klidson Abreu fails drug test for fight vs. Renan Ferreira

The Georgia Athletic and Entertainment Commission, the regulatory body which oversaw 2022 PFL 5 in Atlanta, officially concluded at a recent commission meeting the result of the June 24 bout between [autotag]Klidson Abreu[/autotag] and [autotag]Renan Ferreira[/autotag] will be deemed a no contest.

Initially scored a unanimous decision win for Abreu, the result was switched after Abreu failed a drug test. MMA Junkie confirmed the news via acquisition of a commission document.

While the document sent from commission director Matt Woodruff to Ferreira and his team acknowledges the failed test, it does not specify the substance. MMA Fighting reports the substance was a prescribed medication for a leg laceration.

Abreu’s record reverts to 16-4, while Ferreira is now 9-3.

Only one card remains in the 2022 PFL playoffs – its championships. Abreu didn’t make the playoffs and hasn’t competed since June 24. Meanwhile, Ferreira was eliminated in the opening round of the playoffs by Ante Delija via first-round TKO.

2022 PFL salaries from Atlanta: Anthony Pettis tops disclosed payouts despite loss; Kayla Harrison second

This marks the first time that PFL salaries have been revealed in 2022.

The back half of the 2022 PFL regular season recently took place in Atlanta with three cards in three weeks at Overtime Elite Arena.

Each card spotlighted two specific divisions. PFL 4 took place June 17 and featured men’s lightweights and light heavyweights. One week later, PFL 5 featured featherweights and heavyweights. Last Friday, PFL 6 consisted of welterweights and women’s lightweights.

On Wednesday, MMA Junkie acquired a list of disclosed show and win purses from the Georgia Athletic and Entertainment Commission, the regulatory body that oversaw the events.

Former UFC lightweight champion [autotag]Anthony Pettis[/autotag] ($750,000) led all paydays despite a submission loss to [autotag]Stevie Ray[/autotag]. Two-time PFL season winner [autotag]Kayla Harrison[/autotag] ($500,00) was second on the list, followed by former UFC title challenger and Bellator welterweight champion [autotag]Rory MacDonald[/autotag] ($250,000).

[autotag]Jeremy Stephens[/autotag], [autotag]Lance Palmer[/autotag], [autotag]Brendan Loughnane[/autotag], [autotag]Omari Akhmedov[/autotag], and [autotag]Magomed Magomedkerimov[/autotag] also received six-figure disclosed payouts.

It’s important to note that the figures given do not reflect potential “locker room” bonuses, streaming points, or promotional sponsorship payments.

The Nevada Athletic Commission (NAC) handed [autotag]Spike Carlyle[/autotag] and [autotag]Vince Morales[/autotag] potential 180-day terms for injuries sustained in their respective bouts.

UFC headliners [autotag]Tyron Woodley[/autotag] and [autotag]Gilbert Burns[/autotag] were each suspended, with Woodley getting 45 days due to a facial laceration. Burns, who was victorious after a five-round unanimous decision, was handed a potential 30-day suspensions.

MMA Junkie obtained a list of the UFC on ESPN 9 athletes’ medical suspensions from the NAC on Monday. Fighters can return sooner than the duration of their suspension if cleared by a doctor.

UFC on ESPN 9 headliners Tyron Woodley and Gilbert Burns topped the list of fight night paydays.

The UFC on ESPN 9 headliners were paid as such, respective to the rest of the card.

According to a Nevada State Athletic Commission (NAC) document acquired by MMA Junkie on Monday, former UFC welterweight champion [autotag]Tyron Woodley[/autotag] topped the list of highest earners with a $200,000 paydays, despite his loss to [autotag]Gilbert Burns[/autotag], who earned $164,000.

Two other fighters earned six figures. Co-main event winner [autotag]Augusto Sakai[/autotag] earned $100,000 in a winning effort against [autotag]Blagoy Ivanov[/autotag]. Former UFC women’s flyweight title challenger [autotag]Katlyn Chookagian[/autotag] took home $120,000 for her victory over [autotag]Antonina Shevchenko[/autotag] in the featured prelim bout.

UFC on ESPN 9 took place Saturday at UFC Apex in Las Vegas. The main card and prelims simulcasted on ESPN and ESPN+.

Additionally, the figures do not include money paid by sponsors, including the official UFC on ESPN 9 Promotional Guidelines Compliance pay. They also do not include any other “locker room” or special discretionary bonuses the UFC sometimes pays. They also do not include pay-per-view cuts that some top-level fighters receive.

For example, UFC officials handed out additional $50,000 UFC 249 fight-night bonuses to Burns and Dern for “Performance of the Night,” and Royval and Elliott for “Fight of the Night.”

In other words, the above figures are simply base salaries reported to the commission and do not reflect entire compensation packages for the event.

Dana White on Jon Jones: ‘He could have been the LeBron’ James for UFC

Dana White delivered a backhanded compliment to Jon Jones at UFC on ESPN9.

The rhetoric between Dana White and Jon Jones continued on Saturday night after UFC on ESPN 9.

White and Jones are negotiating payment for “Bones” in a potential heavyweight bout with Francis Ngannou. White has suggested Jones is looking for a huge payday, comparable to what UFC pays Deontay Wilder. Jones, meanwhile, has suggested that is a lie, and has gone so far as to ask White to release the text messages to show it’s not true. After Jones’ most recent comments, White again addressed the negotiations. But he threw in a backhanded compliment of what Jones could have been: A LeBron James figure in MMA.

“I’m always looking at what Jon Jones could’ve been,” White said. “He could have been the LeBron (James) of this sport. He could have been that big.”

Because of failed drug tests and an arrest which have resulted in three suspensions, the UFC light heavyweight champion (26-1 MMA, 20-1 UFC) has had a career fraught with controversy. And so the negotiations for this contract are complicated, with both side accusing the other of lying.

“What do you do?” White said Saturday night. “Who do you believe? It’s up to you guys. What the (expletive) would I lie for? What do I have to gain from lying about it? Why would I lie? It doesn’t matter. You know what I mean? Obviously, he’s fired up right now.”

Though Jones and White haven’t seemed to get along in recent years, UFC chief business officer Hunter Campbell has a positive relationship with Jones. Talks between Campbell and Jones have been positive, per White.

“They had a good talk. They had a good talk yesterday,” White said. “Those guys are tight. Jon Jones and I have always had this. … The stuff that’s he been through, to show up and think he basically (demanded) $15 million, or $20 million, or $30 million, it’s crazy. He can do whatever he wants to do. He can sit out. He can fight. He can do whatever.”

UFC on ESPN 9 fighters took home UFC Promotional Guidelines Compliance pay, a program that launched after the UFC’s deal with Reebok.

LAS VEGAS – Fighters from Saturday’s UFC on ESPN 9 event took home event took home UFC Promotional Guidelines Compliance pay totaling $114,500.

The program, a comprehensive plan that includes outfitting requirements, media obligations and other items under the fighter code of conduct, replaces the previous payments made under the UFC Athlete Outfitting Policy.

UFC on ESPN 9 took place at the UFC Apex. The card aired on ESPN and ESPN+.

Under the UFC Promotional Guidelines Compliance program’s payout tiers, which appropriate the money generated by Reebok’s multi-year sponsorship with the UFC, fighters are paid based on their total number of UFC bouts, as well as Zuffa-era WEC fights (January 2007 and later) and Zuffa-era Strikeforce bouts (April 2011 and later). Fighters with 1-3 bouts receive $3,500 per appearance; 4-5 bouts get $4,000; 6-10 bouts get $5,000; 11-15 bouts earn $10,000; 16-20 bouts pocket $15,000; and 21 bouts and more get $20,000. Additionally, champions earn $40,000 while title challengers get $30,000.

In addition to experience-based pay, UFC fighters will receive in perpetuity royalty payments amounting to 20-30 percent of any UFC merchandise sold that bears their likeness, according to officials.

UFC adds Klidson Abreu vs. Jamahal Hill to May 23 event

The UFC has booked a light heavyweight fight between Jamahal Hill and Klidson Abreu for May 23. The location is TBD.

A light heavyweight matchup is on tap for the UFC’s May 23 event.

Brazil’s [autotag]Klidson Abreu[/autotag] will return to action to take on UFC sophomore [autotag]Jamahal Hill[/autotag]. The fight will be a part of the promotion’s fourth of four events scheduled to take place in 15 days.

Saturday, a person with knowledge of the booking informed MMA Junkie of the plan. The person asked to remain anonymous as the promotion has yet to make an official announcement. MMA Fighting was the first to report the booking.

While the UFC is hosting events in Jacksonville, Fla. on May 9, May 13, and May 16, the May 23 event does not yet have an official location.

Hill (7-0 MMA, 1-0 UFC) returns to action for the first time since a successful UFC debut at UFC on ESPN+ 24 in January. That night, Hill defeated Darko Stosic by unanimous decision.

As for Abreu (15-4 MMA, 2-1 UFC), the 27-year-old fighter will look to punch his ticket back into the win column. After splitting his first two UFC outings, Abreu lost a close November 2019 split decision to Shamil Gamzatov. Abreu was previously booked to fight Gadzhimurad Antigulov as part of the UFC’s June 13 debut in Kazakhstan, prior to the global coronavirus outbreak.

Klidson Abreu vs. Gadzhimurad Antigulov added to UFC Kazakhstan

A light heavyweight matchup between Kildson Abreu and Gadzhimurad Antigulov is the latest addition to the UFC’s first trip to Kazakhstan.

A light heavyweight matchup is the latest addition to the UFC’s first trip to Kazakhstan.

[autotag]Klidson Abreu[/autotag] (15-4 MMA, 1-2 UFC) will face [autotag]Gadzhimurad Antigulov[/autotag] (20-6 MMA, 2-2 UFC) at the event. Abreu posted about the matchup on his social media following an initial report from Combate.

UFC Kazakhstan is expected to take place June 13 at Astana Arena in Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan. The event has not been officially announced by the promotion.

Abreu failed to make good on his UFC debut in February 2019 when he suffered a unanimous decision loss to Magomed Ankalaev. He bounced back against Sam Alvey for his first promotional win, but was edged out in his most recent fight by Shamil Gamzatov at UFC on ESPN+ 21.

After a 14-fight unbeaten run in which he went the distance only once, Antigulov has dropped two in a row with stoppage setbacks to Ion Cutelaba and, most recently, Michal Oleksiejczuk in April 2019. He will look to avoid a three-fight losing skid when he takes on Brazil’s Abreu.
