Steph Curry calls Klay Thompson’s season-ending Achilles injury ‘a gut punch’

Stephen Curry was emotional after Klay Thompson suffered a season-ending Achilles injury.

Last season Stephen Curry only suited up for five games during the Golden State Warriors 2019-20 season due to a broken left hand. Although the two-time Most Valuable Player is slated to make his long-awaited return to Chase Center at the start of the 2020-21 season, it will be without his fellow Splash Brother.

Last week, the Golden State Warriors announced Klay Thompson has suffered a season-ending Achilles tear during a preseason workout in Southern California.

After tearing his ACL in the third quarter of game six of the 2019 NBA Finals, Thompson will miss his second consecutive season with a significant leg injury.

Following Thompson’s injury, Curry spoke about his backcourt mate’s injury in an interview with Marc J. Spears of ESPN. The six-time All-Star called Thompson’s injury “a gut punch.”

Via The Undefeated:

“He’s the best 2-guard in the league,” Curry said. “To get that call was a gut punch for sure. A lot of tears. You don’t really know what to say because a guy like that is having to go through two pretty serious rehabs now. But at the end of the day, we have to have his back. We hope that he is around and a part of what we do through his rehab and staying connected with us.

He can come back strong. He’s a guy that loves the game so much. He is going to do whatever it takes to get back out there on the floor and be himself. That’s what we hope and the confidence that we have. Two-and-a-half years of rehab is tough for anybody. We’re hoping for the best.”

Since sharing a backcourt in 2011, Curry and Thompson have blossomed into one of the league’s most feared tandems. Along with winning three championships with Curry, the Washington State product earned five All-Star bids, two All-NBA Third Team honors and an NBA All-Defensive Second Team nod.

In 2018-19, Thompson averaged 21.5 points on 45.7% shooting from the field with 3.8 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 1.1 steals per contest. During every season of his eight-year career, Thompson has averaged over 40.1 shooting from beyond the arc.

Without Thompson, Golden State will lean on newly acquired players like Kelly Oubre Jr., Brad Wanamaker and Kent Bazemore.

Luka Doncic, Bam Adebayo, Myles Turner, Goran Dragic and other NBA players react to Klay Thompson’s injury

After the Warriors announced Klay Thompson would miss the entire 2020-21 season due to an Achilles injury, the NBA family chimed in on social media with messages of support for the Golden State guard.

On Thursday, the Golden State Warriors announced Klay Thompson has a torn Achilles in his right leg. Thompson’s injury will force him to miss the entire 2020-21 season

Prior to the start of the NBA draft, the five-time All-Star suffered his season-ending Achilles injury at a workout with other NBA players in Southern California.

In June of 2019, Thompson endured another significant injury. On a fast break drive to the basket, the three-time champion suffered a torn ACL in his left knee during the third quarter of game six of the NBA Finals against the Toronto Raptors.

As he rehabbed his knee, Thompson missed all of Golden State’s 2019-20 run. Following a long rehab and an 18-month layoff from game action, Thompson was expected to be on the court for Golden State’s preseason training camp in December.

After playing in 73 or more games in seven consecutive seasons, the 30-year-old is slated to be sidelined for back-to-back campaigns. Over his career in the Bay Area, Thompson is averaging 19.5 points on 45.9% shooting from the field with 3.5 rebounds and 2.3 assists per contest.

Following the initial reports of the news, LeBron James, Trae Young, Donovan Mitchell and other NBA players weighed in on social media with their thoughts on Thompson’s unfortunate injury.

The official announcement of the injury brought a new wave of players from around the league chiming in with messages of support for Thompson.

According to Shams Charania of The Atheltic, Golden State Warriors All-Star shooting guard has suffered an apparent “lower leg injury.”

After missing the entire 2019-20 season due to a knee injury he suffered in the 2019 NBA Finals, Klay Thompson is reportedly dealing with another injury.

According to Shams Charania of The Athletic, the Golden State Warriors’ five-time All-Star shooting guard suffered an apparent “lower leg” injury on Wednesday. Thompson is undergoing tests to determine the severity of the injury, per Charania.

Although he didn’t participate in scrimmages, Thompson was on the floor for Golden State’s offseason minicamp at San Francisco’s Chase Center.

After a positive stretch of practice at offseason minicamp, Thompson was expected to be on the court for Golden State’s preseason training camp before the start of the 2020-21 NBA season.

More details will likely come for Thompson’s reported injury.

Watch: Klay Thompson buries transition 3-pointers in latest offseason workout

In his latest offseason workout, Golden State Warriors guard Klay Thompson was spotted hitting a transition 3-pointer off the dribble.

After sprinting past his brother in a workout earlier in the week, Klay Thompson was spotted getting more work in on Friday. During a pickup game, the five-time All-Star drilled a long-distance jumper while bringing the ball up the court in a fast break.

Co-founder and lead instructor at ICEOCA (Intelligence Concentration Effort Order) Charlie Max Torress shared a video on his Instagram Story of the Golden State Warriors shooting guard knocking down one of his signature transition 3-pointers.

Via @bucketsworth on Instagram:

Thompson was joined at ICEOCA by Milwaukee’s D.J. Wilson and Detroit’s Christian Wood for the workout.

The clip of Thompson working is another positive sign in his rehab from the injury he suffered in the 2019 NBA Finals. The sharpshooting guard recently made his long-awaited return to the practice floor at the Warriors offseason minicamp. The Warriors’ voluntary workouts in The Dubble were Thompson’s first chance to officially practice with his teammates on the court in 15 months.

With no official data for the start of preseason training camp, Thompson will have to wait to make his highly anticipated return to Steve Kerr’s starting lineup at Chase Center.

Steve Kerr says Klay Thompson is ‘not a question mark’ for Warriors preseason training camp

After a positive return to practice for the first time since his injury, Steve Kerr said Klay Thompson is “good to go” for training camp.

After a 15 month layoff from the court, Klay Thompson punched the clock for his first official round of practices since injuring his knee in the 2019 NBA Finals. The Splash Brother was back on the court at Chase Center with his teammates at the Golden State Warriors’ voluntary offseason minicamp.

During his time in the Dubble, the Splash Brother checked off a handful of boxes when it came to his injury recovery. With two weeks worth of practices under his belt, Thompson is continuing to check off boxes in his injury rehab.

Following Golden State’s practices in the Dubble, Steve Kerr expects Thompson to be ready for training camp at the start of the 2020-21 season. In an appearance on The Athletic’s “The TK Pod” with Tim Kawakami, Kerr said Thompson’s knee is “fully healed.”

Kerr via The Athletic’s “The TK Pod:”

No, he’s not a question mark. The camp for Klay was really about just taking the next steps of his process. His knee is fully healed, the ligament is totally strong — this was more about Klay just kind of feeling the contact again.

Along with taking part in controlled 5-on-5 drill work, Kerr said the sharpshooting guard spent time in 1-vs-1 battles with newly hired assistant coach Leandro Barbosa.

He took part in a lot of 5-on-5 controlled drill work, and he didn’t play in the 5-on-5 scrimmages just because we wanted to be really deliberate with what he was doing — the movement, figuring out where he needed to strengthen his legs and his hips, that kind of stuff. So, Klay and Rick [Celebrini] worked really closely together. Leandro Barbosa and Klay played 1-on-1 pretty much every day, which was really helpful for Klay. There was just kind of the next logical step for him in his in his rehab process but, he’s definitely going to be good to go once camp starts.

During the minicamp, the Golden State Warriors shared a pair of videos from Thompson’s workout in the Dubble. Along with knocking down some of his signature jumpers, the five-time All-Star threw down a fierce one-handed jam at Chase Center.

Via @warriors on Twitter:

As his injury continues to progress in a positive direction, the Warriors can turn their attention to building the team around Thompson. Before they’re on the court at Golden State’s preseason training camp, Bob Myers and Kerr will have the opportunity to tweak their roster at the NBA Draft and the free agency window.

Klay Thompson makes return to Warriors practice for first time since suffering knee injury

For the first time since suffering a knee injury in the 2019 NBA Finals, Klay Thompson made his return to the court at Warriors practice.

For the first time in 15 months, Klay Thompson is back on the court at practice for the Golden State Warriors. The five-time All-Star shooting guard was kept out of the entire 2019-20 season with a torn ACL he suffered in the 2019 NBA Finals.

Thompson was absent from the first practice at Golden State’s voluntary offseason minicamp as he finished the NBA’s testing protocol. On Friday, the sharpshooting wing made his long-awaited return to Golden State’s training ground.

Over Golden State’s extended offseason, Thompson has been working out in Southern California. Prior to the start of offseason minicamp, Thompson was training at Chase Center with Golden State’s assistant coach Chris DeMarco. Friday served as his first chance to join the court with his Warriors teammates.

The Golden State Warriors Twitter account shared a photo of Thompson getting some shots up inside “The Dubble.”

Via @warriors on Twitter:

In a conference call with Bay Area media, Steve Kerr called Thompson’s return “a sight for sore eyes.” The Golden State Warriors coach said day one was “a good first step” for Thompson.

Via Warriors Sound Cloud:

Number one, it was great to see him — a sight for sore eyes… It’s been a long time coming.

It was great to have him out on the floor, in the locker room. Just his presence alone gave us a jolt of energy and excitement. And then, practice went well. This is the first practice coming off an ACL injury and a year and a half absence, so I didn’t expect him to be in top shape, in top form — and he was not, but he moved well, and it’s a good first step.

Despite Thompson’s appearance at practice, he will have to wait for a reunion with Stephen Curry and Draymond Green. Thompson’s fellow Splash Brother and Green are listed as doubtful for Golden State’s voluntary minicamp due to family reasons.

Thompson and his teammates will continue working out at San Francisco’s Chase Center until Oct. 6.

Mychal Thompson says Klay is ‘fully healthy’ and practicing at ‘full speed’ in offseason workouts

Mychal Thompson provided an update for Klay’s recovery, saying the Golden State Warriors shooting guard is practicing at “full speed.”

While a small handful of teams are still busy with the NBA playoffs inside the Orlando Bubble, the Golden State Warriors are already preparing for next season.

After his injury from the 2019 NBA Finals held Klay Thompson out of the entire 2019-20 season, the sharpshooting guard has been working towards his long-awaited return to Steve Kerr’s rotation. In June, the guard was medically cleared to train without restriction on his surgically repaired knee.

During Golden State’s extended offseason, the three-time champion has been working out in Southern California. On Sunday, his father, Mychal Thompson, provided an update on his offseason training. In an interview with Amin Elhassan and Jason Jackson on Sirius XM’s NBA Radio, Thompson said his son is “fully healthy” and practicing at “full speed.”

Via @SiriusXMNBA on Twitter:

He’s doing great, man. He’s playing, going full speed, and is back to being a basketball player fully healthy. So, he’s feeling good. And I’ve been watching him work out, and I’ll tell you one thing, crazy to say, but his shot looks even better, and which should be expected because that’s all you could do for so long is just go out and shoot, shoot, shoot until you are fully healthy, until you get that full clearance, but he is ready to go. If the season were to start at a normal time, he’d be out there with Steph and the boys again…

Steve Kerr has come up and watched him work out and watched him scrimmage. So yeah, they’re back to playing, he’s back to playing and doing all the natural things — moving laterally like he did before the surgery…

Once the Warriors are cleared to host in-market group workouts during the offseason, Thompson will be able to join Steph Curry, Draymond Green and the rest of his Golden State teammates on the practice floor for the first time in months.

[lawrence-related id=29637]

Having Thompson fully healthy in the offseason’s early stages will give him more time to work with Golden State’s new arrivals Andrew Wiggins, Eric Paschall and Marquese Chriss.

Getting their five-time All-Star shooting guard back healthy is a significant box the Golden State Warriors need to check off before making their climb back into the playoff picture in 2021.

Steve Kerr says Klay Thompson was ‘draining shots from everywhere’ in recent workout

After recently watching Klay Thompson workout, Steve Kerr said the sharpshooting wing was ‘draining shots’ from all over the court.

Klay Thompson returning to the floor healthy is a key box for the Golden State Warriors to mark on their offseason checklist.

Thompson hasn’t hit the court since suffering a knee injury in game six of the 2019 NBA Finals. However, the Splash Brother is on his way to returning to the floor. Fortunately for the Warriors, most of the news surrounding Thompson’s ACL rehab has been positive.

In an interview with David Aldridge and Wosny Lambre on The Athletic’s Hoop Adjacent Podcast, Golden State head coach Steve Kerr said he recently watched Thompson on the court in Southern California. Kerr confirmed the Golden State sharpshooter is ready to get back on the floor.

Via The Athletic’s Hoop Adjacent Podcast:

Klay’s [Thompson] doing great, he’s basically ready to go. It’s been a little over a year now since the injury. I saw him about two weeks ago — I went to Orange County, where he lives and works out. I basically took a day and spent some time with him and watched him workout. One of our assistant coaches came down for the week to train him. We got together, and it was great to see him because he loves the game so much, he loves to play and he’s missed it so much. He looked great. He was in really good shape and draining shots from everywhere like the Klay we know and love. He’s ready to go, it’s just we don’t know when basketball will be played, but Klay will be ready.

Thompson was recently spotted on the court in Southern California with NFL quarterbacks Josh Allen, Sam Darnold and Kyle Allen. Prior to his shooting drill with a trio of NFL signal-callers, the five-time All-Star shared a video of himself on Instagram working out alongside his dog Rocco.

With the Warriors extended offseason just getting underway, Thompson will have to wait a little longer before making his much-anticipated return to Golden State’s starting lineup.

Report: Klay Thompson medically cleared to train without restrictions

After missing over a year due to injury, Klay Thompson has been cleared to train without restrictions according to Anthony Slater.

Long before the Golden State Warriors season was cut short, Klay Thompson’s 2019-20 campaign was decided. Prior to basketball getting put on hold due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Warriors officially ruled out Thompson for the season with the same knee injury he suffered in the 2019 NBA Finals.

Over one year later, positive news is surfacing regarding Thompson’s injury. According to Anthony Slater of The Athletic, the five-time All-Star has been medically cleared to train without restrictions.

With the Warriors not heading to Orlando for the NBA’s restart, the next time we could see Thompson on the floor with Stephen Curry and Draymond Green could be when the team reports to summer minicamp. According to Slater, Thompson is expected to fully take part in Golden State’s summer activities.

Via The Athletic:

Whenever it does happen, Thompson expects to be a full on-court participant in all the team’s mandatory summer activities, sources confirmed.

If the NBA is aiming to start the 2020-21 season in December, Thompson will have a nearly 18-month layoff from the court. Over Golden State’s early offseason, Thompson will have the opportunity to shake off his rust and learn from his new set of teammates.

Since the last time Thompson stepped on the court, Andrew Wiggins, Eric Paschall and Marquese Chriss have arrived at Golden State. Thompson will need to familiarize himself with the Warriors’ new trio and potentially a top-five draft pick.

While Thompson still has ways to go, getting the sharpshooting wing cleared to return to the court is a significant box for Golden State to check off in their quest to return to the playoffs.
