The Oilers (-190) are a little too expensive straight up for my liking.

Risking nearly 2 times your potential return isn’t a great long-term strategy, as 1 of those kind of losses can negate several victories over time.

It’s just too risky, as both of these goaltenders weren’t at their best in Game 1, and the Kings (+155) could easily steal Game 2 with a couple of bounces going their way.

PASS.

Puck line/Against the spread

The OILERS -1.5 (+135) are a much better value, with much less risk, on the puck line in Game 2.

The Kings +1.5 (-160) were able to cobble together 4 goals against Skinner, but his overall body of work against Los Angeles in the regular season suggests that was an anomaly. Expect much better from the All-Star.

Edmonton has won the past 3 meetings with LA by 2 or more goals, so if you like the Oilers to win, you should also like them to cover.

Over/Under

OVER 6 (-115) is actually surprisingly low for Game 2, so take advantage.

While we’ve seen the Under routinely cash in this series in recent seasons, it’s surprising that the total isn’t 6.5, given the fact we had 11 combined goals in Game 1.

The goaltending should be a little bit better in the 2nd go-around, but it isn’t likely to be a defensive slog by any means.

The Oilers evened the series with a 5-4 overtime victory Sunday in Game 4. The Kings had fired out to a 3-0 lead after the 1st period and appeared to be on their way to taking a commanding 3-1 series lead. The Oilers had other ideas in the 2nd period, however, as D Evan Bouchard struck on the power play and C Leon Draisaitl struck at even strength before adding the tying goal with the man advantage in the waning seconds of the period.

Kings D Mathieu Roy beat G Jack Campbell early in the 3rd period to give L.A. another lead. Campbell had replaced G Stuart Skinner after the opening frame. Oilers LW Evander Kane struck late in regulation to force overtime.

LW Zach Hyman netted the game-winning goal at 10:39 of overtime with a helper from Bouchard to draw the series even. We’ll now see how the Kings respond after the emotional loss.

The Oilers (-225) have to feel great about their comeback in Los Angeles in Game 4. Edmonton was staring into the abyss, facing a 3-1 series lead.

While Edmonton has the momentum heading home, you can’t risk more than 2 times your potential return. We have had overtime in 3 of the first 4 games in this series, so expect another close game.

Puck line/Against the spread

The KINGS +1.5 (-135) are a solid play on the puck line. While I am expecting the Oilers to eke out the Game 5 win, pushing Los Angeles to the brink, I wouldn’t be surprised to see yet another overtime game. Only 1 of the first 4 games in this series has been decided in regulation.

Over/Under

OVER 6.5 (-115) is the lean in Game 5.

We had a total of 9 goals in Game 4, and we should get some more fire-wagon hockey in this pivotal game. In Game 1 in Edmonton, he had a total of 7 goals, and an average of 6.5 goals per game in the first 2 battles at Rogers Place. I expect to see this one inch across the finish line for an Over, too.

The Kings could go with either Copley or Korpisalo here, but I think the playoff experience will give the edge. Korpisalo went 7-3-1 with a 2.13 GAA and .921 SV% in 11 games since being acquired from Columbus. He started 9 postseason games in 2019-20 and helped upset the Toronto Maple Leafs. He was 3-5 with a 1.90 GAA, .941 SV% and 2 SO in those playoffs. He was great in a 2-0 loss to Edmonton March 30, stopping 35 of 37 shots.

Skinner’s emergence put this team into position to make some noise. He was awesome down the stretch, going 4-0-0 with a 1.25 GAA and .961 SV% in 4 April starts. He was 2-1-0 with a 1.78 GAA and .950 SV% in 4 games against LA this season. The last time he faced them, he delivered a 43-save shutout March 30.

Moneyline

The Kings played Edmonton hard this season, allowing them to only score 9 goals in 4 games. Their defense will keep it interesting, but Edmonton will be too ferocious to contain offensively. I might consider the chalky -200 Oilers ML here, but there is value to be had on the lesser-known options.

Head to the Win/Total section, and under 1×2 and Both Teams to Score 1 or More Goals in Regular Time: OILERS TO WIN AND YES (+100).

Puck line/Against the spread

The Kings were great on the puck line at 46-36 this season and especially good on the road at 26-15. I think they stay within a goal, and Edmonton only had 4 empty-netters all year, but I’m not paying -155 with the possibility of McDavid facing an empty net.

I think this one is tight throughout, so head to the Win/Total section again, and take OILERS AND UNDER 6.5 GOALS (+175).

Over/Under

As mentioned, I like the Under here. Despite going 9-0-1 in the last 10 games, Edmonton was just 3-5-2 O/U. The Under is 5-1 in the last 6 meetings and 4-1 in the last 5 in Edmonton. The Oilers avoided elimination with a 4-2 victory Thursday in Los Angeles. They jumped out to a 2-0 lead 1:50 into the second period, but the Kings rallied and managed to tie it in the first minute of the third period.

Edmonton regained the lead when D Tyson Barrie scored with 5:10 to go and sealed it on LW Evander Kane’s empty-netter with 1:00 remaining – his second goal of Game 6.

The Kings limited the Oilers’ special teams as they allotted them just 1 power play, which was unsuccessful. That’ll be a big key Saturday as the Kings can’t match the Oilers offensively.

The Oilers have benefitted from Kane becoming a monster in the series. His 7 playoff goals are tied for the NHL lead. C Connor McDavid has been great, scoring 3 goals with 9 assists for an NHL co-leading 12 playoff points. C Leon Draisaitl has 5 goals and 3 assists, but he really hasn’t been as big of a factor as Kane, who is a plus-8 in the series.

Aside from his Game 4 shutout, Quick has been so-so in the series. He has a 3.66 GAA and .893 SV% with at least 3 going past him in each game except the shutout. He hasn’t been getting to the high-danger chances, either, as he’s 16th in the playoffs with a -0.3 goals saved above expected.

Coming into these playoffs, if I asked what goalie would be the best according to metrics, I guarantee Smith’s name wouldn’t have been in the top 5. Smith has actually been the best goalie in the postseason in terms of the above-average saves. He has an astounding 8.3 goals saved above expected. Smith has a 2.67 GAA and .931 SV% in the series, but 2 of his 3 losses have been at home.

The road team has won 4 games in this series, and there’s no chance I would take the Oilers at -220 to win a Game 7.

They have more talent, better goaltending and the home-ice advantage. So why are we fading them? Because they haven’t done it, and there’s a big cloud hanging over them to go far into the playoffs.

The Kings were supposed to be home by now so they have less to lose. They need to pound Smith with 40 shots as they are 2-1 in the series when they do. Plus, they’ll need to limit Kane.

McDavid will get his and set his teammates to get theirs, but that line can’t do it alone.

This is a major contrarian pick – Pregame.com has 91% of the cash on Edmonton. Which team has more poise under pressure? Remember how the Oilers coughed up the puck behind their net and lost Game 1? Advantage KINGS (+175).

Against the spread

If the Kings are going to pull this off, they might need OT. However, in the event they can’t pull it off, they’re going to get beat by more than 1 goal. PASS.

Over/Under

The Kings responded to a Game 3 defeat with a 4-0 shutout to even the series in Game 4 Sunday. This series has gone back and forth with laughers after a tight Game 1 that Edmonton literally gave away on a bad turnover.

Kings RW Carl Grundstrom emerged with 2 goals and an assist in Game 4. He has just 36 points in 129 career regular-season games. G Jonathan Quick was dominant stopping all 31 shots.

Oilers stud C Connor McDavid was kept in check after he had 2 points in each of the first 3 games of the series. C Leon Draisaitl was held scoreless after a goal in each of the first 3 games.

Quick has been feast or famine in this series. He is coming off a 31-save masterpiece in Game 4. At one point, he even lost his glove and was attempting to make saves with his bare hand. Before that, though, he allowed 10 goals in two games and didn’t finish Game 3. He has an .894 SV% in the series.

Smith has been pretty steady – it’s his offense that has been inconsistent. Smith has a 2.27 GAA and a .942 SV% in the series. The Kings have been relentless as he has faced 46 and 45 shots in the last two games. The Oilers’ blue line will need to step up as fatigue could set in seeing so many fired at him.

The Kings are playing with two starting defensemen out for the season. The Oilers had an off night Sunday in LA. Maybe they didn’t use Saturday wisely, but we could see them record 5 or 6 goals tonight. We’ll take the OILERS -1.5 (+112).

Over/Under

The Over has hit twice in this series, and the two occasions it didn’t hit were because a team got shut out. We expect Edmonton to respond offensively, and their goalie has seen nearly 100 shots in the last two games and at that rate a couple are bound to go in.

LEAN OVER 6.5 (-105) or place a live bet when the Over drops to 5.5. Neither side has scored within the first 3 minutes of any game in this series, and that might work to your advantage.

The Kings stole one in Game 1 as Oilers goalie Mike Smith tried to clear the puck from behind his net and turned it over, which led to the eventual winner. C Phillip Danault made it 4-3 with just over 5 minutes to go, and Edmonton couldn’t recover.

Edmonton studs C Connor McDavid and C Leon Draisaitl each scored a goal in Game 1 and will look to increase the wattage Wednesday. They combined for 8 shots on goal in the opener and you can look for them to respond to the body blow from Game 1 early in Game 2.

Quick was great in Game 1 as 2 of the 3 goals that got past him were on the power play. He stopped 10 of 12 shots on the PK, and nothing got past him in the final 30 minutes. Quick was on fire in April with a 6-1 record, 2.24 GAA and .915 SV%. He was 1-1-1 with a 2.29 GAA and .918 SV% against Edmonton in the regular season.

Smith had some good spots and some really bad ones in Game 1. He allowed a somewhat soft goal to LW Brendan Lemieux in the 2nd period before the horrible gaffe on the game winner. Smith is now 11-18 with a 2.40 GAA and .929 SV% in his playoff career. He’ll be on a short leash.

The Oilers only lost Game 1 because of shaky goaltending and a bad mistake that happens once in a blue moon. They held the Kings scoreless across 4 power plays, had more hits and took more shots.

The Kings are a young team that may be a year ahead of where they were projected, and the Oilers have bitter recent history to fuel them. We’re not putting -205 stock in them, though. PASS.

Against the spread

Edmonton won the last 3 meetings of the series in the regular season, and 2 of them were by 1 goal. The 5-2 win in February came right after the Oilers fired their coach and went on a heater to right the ship. I don’t like the value of it, but LEAN KINGS +1.5 (-160). I prefer that side over an Oilers win by 2 or more markers.

Over/Under

The Under is 5-1-1 in the Kings’ last 7 playoff games as an underdog. The Over has hit in 3 of the last 4 meetings between these two sides, but I feel like this has to be a tighter game – particularly on Edmonton’s back end.

It’s not a great feel because these two teams have been anything but consistent, but we’ll LEAN UNDER 6.5 (-115).

The Los Angeles Kings are on the road to open their 1st-round Western Conference playoff series with the Edmonton Oilers Monday. Puck drop at Rogers Place is set for 10 p.m. ET (ESPN2). Below, we look at the Kings vs. Oilers odds and lines, and make our expert NHL picks, predictions and bets.

The Kings finished the regular season 44-27-11 for 99 points to earn the 3rd seed in the Pacific Division. L.A. has the second-lowest goal differential (+3) of any playoff team (the Dallas Stars are last at -8). The Kings are in the playoffs for the first time since a 1st-round exit in 2017-18. They haven’t advanced past the opening round since capturing the Stanley Cup in 2013-14.

The Oilers clinched opening-round home ice with 104 points on the heels of a 49-27-6 season. The Oilers have large playoff hopes after an astounding season from C Connor McDavid, who captured the Art Ross Trophy as the league’s leading scorer with a career-high 123 points, while teammate C Leon Draisaitl tied his career-high as he finished 4th in the scoring race with 110 points. Edmonton has not advanced beyond the opening round since a 2nd-round exit in 2016-17.

Quick rebounded in April after a rough stretch from January through March as he went 6-1-0 with a 2.24 GAA and .915 SV%. The veteran netminder was 1-1-1 in 3 games against the Oilers this season with a 2.29 GAA and .918 SV%, most recently taking a loss April 7 in a 3-2 defeat where he stopped 27 of 30 shots.

Smith had his best month of the season in April. The 40-year-old ‘tender finished 9-0-0 with a .951 SV% and 1.66 GAA while posting both of his shutouts along the way. He was 2-0 in two starts against L.A. with 61 saves on 65 shots.

Money line

The Oilers took 3 of 4 meetings from the Kings during the regular season, outscoring their division rival 13-12 across the series. Los Angeles’ lone victory came in an early December meeting while Smith was sidelined.

Both goaltenders come into Monday’s series opener playing excellent hockey, but Smith has been the better of the two and held the Kings in check during both of his starts against them in the regular season. Edmonton won those two games by a combined 8-4 mark.

Edmonton is one of the league’s premier offensive sides and should do enough to squeak by Monday. This is starting to push the limits of a money line bet. If it exceeds -200, you’d want to probably only consider it as part of a parlay and not a standalone, bet but you can BACK THE OILERS (-200) to take the series opener on home ice for now.

Against the spread

I wouldn’t get too carried away here — the Kings have mostly played the Oilers tight throughout the season. However, the better offensive team and the better goaltender should give an edge to the home side and the pressure will be ramped up on L.A. to even the game late in the final frame. That should produce additional chances at the empty-net goal and lend some value to the OILERS -1.5 (+125).

Over/Under

Playoff hockey tends to be physical, defensive affairs, and with Quick and Smith both playing well lately I wouldn’t bank on either getting totally shelled Monday. A small lean to the UNDER 6.5 (-120) is my play here.
