LSU jumps up to No. 4 in women’s basketball AP Poll

The Tigers are on the rise after two teams ranked above them lost this weekend.

The final weekend of the regular season went about as well as the Tigers could have hoped.

Previously the No. 5 team in the country, LSU finished up a 27-1 regular season with a win over Mississippi State on Sunday. Coach Kim Mulkey’s team took care of business, and they are on the rise in the AP Top 25 to No. 4 after catching a couple breaks.

Two teams ranked ahead of the Tigers — No. 2 Indiana and No. 3 Stanford — lost their final games against top-10 teams in Iowa and Utah, respectively. Though the Hoosiers remain at No. 2, Stanford dropped three spots to No. 6, allowing LSU to move up.

LSU has a double-bye at the SEC Tournament this week in Greenville, South Carolina, thanks to its No. 2 finish in conference play. The Tigers will open things up in the quarterfinals on Friday against the winner of the game between No. 7-seeded Georgia and No. 10-seeded Auburn on Thursday.

Final SEC women’s basketball standings, conference tournament seed list

The Tigers have a bye until the quarterfinal round thanks to their No. 2 finish in SEC play.

The SEC women’s basketball regular season came to an end on Sunday night, and in the final game, LSU took down Mississippi State by 15 in front of a record-setting PMAC crowd to match the program record with 27 wins.

Now, [autotag]Kim Mulkey[/autotag] and her squad turn their attention to the SEC Tournament, which begins this week in Greenville, South Carolina. By virtue of a 15-1 finish in SEC play in which the only lost came against the best team in the country — undefeated South Carolina — LSU has a bye until the quarterfinal round and won’t play until Friday afternoon at Bon Secours Wellness Arena.

As the Tigers prepare to begin their postseason journey, here’s how the final SEC standings and tournament seeding shake out.

LSU’s Angel Reese selected as a Naismith Defensive Player of the Year semifinalist

Reese is one of 10 semifinalists for the national award.

[autotag]Angel Reese[/autotag] has been stacking up conference awards this season, but with the regular season in the books and the No. 5 LSU Tigers set to begin their postseason run, she may also be in line for some national discussions.

On Monday, Reese was named a semifinalist for the Naismith Defensive Player of the Year by the Atlanta Tipoff Club. She’s one of 10 semifinalists and is joined by fellow SEC athletes Brea Beal and Aliyah Boston, both of whom play for South Carolina.

Reese is also one of just three underclassmen among the semifinalists.

A sophomore transfer from Maryland, Reese has played a major role in the leap forward the Tigers took this winter. She averaged 23.7 points and 16 rebounds during the regular season, in addition to 1.5 blocks and 1.8 steals. She leads the team in all four of those metrics.

Reese’s defensive prowess is apparent from the moment you start watching this LSU team, and it’s no surprise she’s garnering national attention as the No. 5 Tigers finished the season 27-1.

Angel Reese continues to rack up SEC weekly awards, named league Player of the Week for 7th time

The SEC simply has no answer for Reese.

The SEC simply has no answer for [autotag]Angel Reese[/autotag].

The sophomore forward from Baltimore who transferred in this offseason from Maryland has been as impactful as any player in college basketball in the midst of a record-setting 2022-23 season.

After notching a pair of double-doubles this week (23 points and 18 rebounds at Vanderbilt, 23 points and 26 rebounds vs. Mississippi State) she’s been named the SEC Player of the Week for a record seventh time this season.

Averaging 23.7 points and 16 rebounds per game on the season, Reese notched her 27th double-double of the season in Sunday’s regular-season finale against Mississippi State, tying Sylvia Fowles’ program record. Sunday’s game was her fifth 20-point, 20-rebound game of the year, and she became the first SEC player to have two 26-rebound games in her career.

Reese and the rest of the Tigers will be in action this weekend at the SEC Tournament in Greenville, South Carolina, where two-seeded LSU will face the winner of No. 7 Georgia and No. 10 Auburn on Friday afternoon.

LSU women’s basketball sets attendance record at PMAC in win over Mississippi State

There was a record-setting 15,721 fans on hand at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center on Sunday night.

There was a packed house on hand  — literally — at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center on Sunday evening as the LSU women’s basketball team beat Mississippi State 74-59 to close out the regular season at 27-1, matching the program-best win total from 2004-05.

With an announced attendance at 15,721 for senior night, it was the largest crowd the PMAC has seen for any event since the venue opened in 1972 with more than 2,000 more people in attendance than the official capacity.

LSU closed out one of the best regular seasons in program history under second-year coach Kim Mulkey, but it’s looking for more. The Tigers are the No. 2 seed at the SEC Tournament in Greenville, South Carolina, this week and could have the opportunity to avenge their lone loss of the year against top-ranked, undefeated South Carolina.

If LSU can make a championship run and defeat the Gamecocks, Mulkey’s team will likely be in line for a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament.

PHOTOS: A look at LSU women’s basketball’s seniors ahead of final home game

The Tigers will honor four seniors at halftime against Mississippi State on Sunday evening.

The No. 5 LSU women’s basketball team will be playing its final game the Pete Maravich Assembly Center this season on Sunday afternoon against the Mississippi State Bulldogs at 5 p.m. CT to close out the regular season.

It will be senior night for the Tigers, and the team plans to honor [autotag]Jasmine Carson[/autotag], [autotag]Alexis Morris[/autotag], [autotag]Emily Ward[/autotag] and [autotag]LaDazhia Williams[/autotag] at halftime against MSU, according to a release from LSU.

This group has accomplished a lot this season, and with a win in their final outing at the PMAC, they could match the program’s previous record of 27 regular season wins, which was set back in 2004-05.

Ahead of senior night, here are the best photos of LSU’s upperclassmen group from the season.

How to watch No. 5 LSU women’s basketball vs. Mississippi State in regular season finale

The Tigers will look to match their program record with their 27th regular-season win on Sunday.

The No. 5 LSU women’s basketball team will look to match the best regular-season record in program history as Kim Mulkey’s squad goes for its 27th win on Sunday evening against the Mississippi State Bulldogs.

It will be senior day for the Tigers (26-1, 14-1 SEC), and they will honor [autotag]Jasmine Carson[/autotag], [autotag]Alexis Morris[/autotag], [autotag]Emily Ward[/autotag] and [autotag]LaDazhia Williams[/autotag] at halftime of the game against MSU (20-8, 9-6 SEC).

“Senior day is coming up Saturday at five o’clock against maybe the hottest team in the SEC right now,” Mulkey said in a release. “They are really, really playing good to get off that bubble and get to the NCAA Tournament.”

LSU has already locked up the No. 2 seed at the SEC Tournament, though a South Carolina loss on Sunday would allow the team to grab a share of the conference title with a win. The Bulldogs, meanwhile, have won five of their last six and sit in a logjam in a tie for fifth in the league. A win would go a long way for both its conference seeding and NCAA Tournament hopes.

[autotag]Angel Reese[/autotag], meanwhile, will aim to match [autotag]Sylvia Fowles[/autotag]’ school record 27 double-doubles against the Bulldogs on Sunday. Here’s everything you need to know to follow this game, which tips off at 5 p.m. CT on the SEC Network.

LSU women’s basketball clinches 2nd in SEC with win over Vanderbilt

The Tigers won their third straight thanks to Angel Reese’s 26th double-double of the season.

The Tigers won their third-straight game on Thursday night as Kim Mulkey’s group took down Vanderbilt in Nashville 82-63 to secure a second-place finish in the SEC for the second-straight season.

LSU (26-1, 14-1 SEC) never trailed in this game. It jumped out to a 40-23 lead at halftime, and it held control throughout the final two quarters. The Tigers have struggled a bit defensively in recent outings, but Vanderbilt (12-17, 3-12 SEC) shot just 38% from the field in this game, though it did hit 12 threes.

The Commodores had no answer for [autotag]Angel Reese[/autotag], who scored 23 points with 18 rebounds to notch her 26th double-double of the season. [autotag]Alexis Morris[/autotag] also had a big game offensively, scoring 21 points. LSU really flexed its muscle in the paint, outscoring Vandy 46-16 there.

The Tigers will look to close out the regular season with a win — which would tie the program-best finish — in the season finale on Sunday when it returns to the PMAC to host Mississippi State.

How to watch No. 5 LSU women’s basketball at Vanderbilt on Thursday night

The Tigers hope to extend their winning streak to three in Nashville.

LSU’s women’s basketball team has responded well since a frustrating road loss to No. 1 South Carolina spoiled its perfect start.

The No. 5 Tigers (25-1, 13-1 SEC) have won their last two games against Ole Miss and Florida by a combined 20 points. Now, they have a chance to clinch the No. 2 seed in the SEC Tournament — as well as match the best regular-season finish in program history — as they enter the final week of the season.

But to do so, the Tigers need to win their final two games against Vanderbilt and Mississippi State. First up, they’ll draw the Commodores on Thursday night in Nashville.

Vandy (12-16, 3-11 SEC) has struggled this season and lost by 25 points to LSU back on Jan. 1, but the ‘Dores have been playing a bit better recently. They’ve won two of their last four, including a 22-point win over Kentucky on Sunday.

“They are playing at home, and they are playing good,” coach [autotag]Kim Mulkey[/autotag] said in a release. “They are playing confident right now.”

LSU will look to keep up its winning ways on Thursday night and avoid adding a second tick in the loss column. Here’s everything you need to know to follow this one, which tips off at 6:30 p.m. CT at Memorial Gymnasium in Nashville.
