Falcons sign veteran outside linebacker to practice squad

The Falcons have signed former fifth-round pick Khalid Kareem to their practice squad

The Atlanta Falcons have signed linebacker Khalid Kareem to their 16-man practice squad, according to team reporter Tori McElhaney. Kareem, 26, was selected by the Cincinnati Bengals in the fifth round of the 2020 NFL draft out of Notre Dame.

During his first two seasons in Cincinnati, Kareem appeared in 23 games, recording 28 tackles (14 solo), one sack, one forced fumble and four QB hits. In 2021, Kareem earned a Pro Football Focus grade of 86.3 with a run defense grade of 91.0.

After a one-year stint with the Colts in 2022, Kareem signed with the Chicago Bears in 2023. His playing time has dwindled over the last two seasons, but he’s still a nice depth addition for Atlanta.

Kareem fills the 16th and final spot on the Falcons practice squad, but the team only has 52 players on the roster following the Taylor Heinicke trade. Check out the team’s updated 16-man practice squad below:

  1. OL Elijah Wilkinson
  2. LB Monty Rice
  3. WR Chris Blair
  4. WR Jesse Matthews
  5. WR Dylan Drummond
  6. RB Carlos Washington Jr.
  7. OL Andrew Stueber
  8. OL Julién Davenport
  9. TE John FitzPatrick
  10. CB Natrone Brooks
  11. CB Kevin King
  12. DB Dane Cruikshank
  13. DL Demone Harris
  14. DL Zion Logue
  15. DL LaCale London
  16. LB Khalid Kareem

Atlanta officially announced the Heinicke trade on Thursday afternoon, sending the veteran QB to the Chargers in exchange for a conditional seventh-round pick that can turn into a sixth-rounder based on playing time. Highlights of every new Bears roster addition

The Bears added four new faces to the roster, including Dan Feeney and Trent Taylor. Check out highlights of each player:

The Chicago Bears made several roster moves after setting their initial 53-man roster. They claimed two players off of waivers and added a couple of other players through free agency and trade.

Chicago traded for offensive lineman Dan Feeney, sending a 2024 sixth-round pick to the Miami Dolphins. Feeney provides depth along the interior offensive line, where he’s played center and both guard positions.

The Bears claimed defensive end Khalid Kareem and safety Quindell Johnson off waivers, addressing depth concerns at both positions. They also went out and signed Trent Taylor to serve as punt returner.

In corresponding roster moves, Chicago waived defensive end Terrell Lewis and safety A.J. Thomas. They also placed left guard Teven Jenkins and center Doug Kramer on injured reserve.

The Bears have welcomed four new members to the roster. Here are highlights of each of them:

Two Colts players claimed off waivers

Darius Rush and Khalid Kareem were the only Colts players claimed off waivers.

A pair of Indianapolis Colts players who were waived during final roster cuts were claimed by other teams on the waiver wire Wednesday.

Though the Colts parted ways with over 30 players to get the roster down to 53 during final cuts, rookie cornerback Darius Rush and defensive end Khalid Kareem were the only players claimed.

Rush, a fifth-round pick in April’s draft, was a surprise cut for the Colts. He was claimed by the Kansas City Chiefs after a rocky preseason. General manager Chris Ballard said the decision ultimately came down to Rush or fellow draft pick Jaylon Jones, and the Colts decided to go with the latter.

“That’s a good question, that was hard. Jaylon Jones,” Ballard said of why Rush was cut.

Kareem was a standout for the Colts during the preseason, but it was ultimately a pretty crowded room to break into. He led the team with 3.0 sacks, four quarterback hits and four tackles for loss during the preseason.

He was claimed by the Chicago Bears.

Bears claim former Colts DE Khalid Kareem off waivers

The Bears have made the first waiver claim, adding former Colts DE Khalid Kareem to the roster.

The Chicago Bears are sitting atop the waiver wire priority list, and they wasted no time in making a claim.

According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the Bears have claimed former Indianapolis Colts defensive end Khalid Kareem off waivers. Kareem also played with the Cincinnati Bengals.

This move comes shortly after news broke that the Bears were releasing defensive end Terrell Lewis, who had an impressive training camp and preseason. Former fifth-round pick Trevis Gipson was also a surprise cut.

Kareem also had an impressive preseason with the Colts, where he recorded a sack in all three preseason games. He also totaled 11 pressures, six tackles and eight stops.

Kareem joins a revamped defensive end group that includes Yannick Ngakoue, DeMarcus Walker, Dominique Robinson and Rasheem Green.

Predicting final wave of Colts roster cuts before deadline

The Colts must get the roster down to 53 players today. Here’s our prediction on the final wave of cuts.

The Indianapolis Colts are already on their way to trimming the roster down to 53 players before Tuesday’s deadline at 4:00 p.m. ET, but there are still several more moves to make.

Entering Tuesday morning, the Colts have parted ways with 14 players. You can keep up with the latest updates throughout the day via our tracker. We will continue to update the tracker as the news flies in Tuesday.

You also can check out our final 53-man roster projection, which will coincide with this list below. In regards to the Jonathan Taylor situation, we left him off this list even with the potential of a trade taking place. There simply isn’t enough information as of this writing to know what will happen.

With the deadline quickly approaching, here’s our prediction for the final wave of roster cuts for the Colts:

8 toughest cuts from our final Colts’ 53-man roster projection

These were the toughest cuts from our Colts’ final roster projection.

The Indianapolis Colts have until Tuesday afternoon to cut the roster down to 53 players as the preseason officially comes to an end.

This is no easy task, and there will be plenty of surprises along the way. After three preseason games and joint practices with two separate teams, the Colts have to use all the information they’ve gathered to compile the best collection of 53 players moving forward.

The process, of course, doesn’t end with the initial 53-man roster, and it’s likely that changes will come immediately the day after through the waiver wire.

As we went through with our final roster projection ahead of Tuesday’s deadline, there were some difficult choices made regarding players on the roster bubble. It could be due to the fact that they played well in a crowded room or they didn’t show quite enough to be worthy of a spot.

Here’s a look at the eight toughest cuts we made in our final roster projection for the Colts:

Grading the Colts’ free agency moves in 2023

Grading every move the Colts have made in free agency this offseason.

The Indianapolis Colts have turned their attention to the 2023 NFL draft after making some waves since the opening of free agency last month.

While the Colts are still likely to add a handful of pieces to the roster before the draft—specifically at cornerback and offensive line—the majority of their moves have been made in free agency.

If and when those moves are made before the draft, we’ll add them to this list of grades.

Even with the noise quieting down, we’re still tracking the moves the Colts are making in free agency and will do so through the month of April.

Here’s a look at our grades for the Colts’ moves in free agency, which also includes the notable moves of a trade and the release of a pair of starters:

Colts re-sign DE Khalid Kareem

The Colts re-signed DE Khalid Kareem.

The Indianapolis Colts re-signed free-agent defensive end Khalid Kareem, the team announced Monday.

Kareem, 24, was a fifth-round pick with the Cincinnati Bengals in the 2020 NFL draft out of Notre Dame. The Colts signed him off the Bengals practice squad in December of the 2022 season, appearing in four games down the stretch.

Kareem has appeared in just 11 games over the last two seasons after playing a full campaign during his rookie season with the Bengals in 2020. He is likely going to be battling for a roster spot during training camp in the defensive end room.

Kareem is the sixth player from the Colts’ 2022 roster to re-sign with the team this offseason.

Keep up to date with the latest news, signings and rumors through our free agency tracker for the Colts.

Bengals lose pass-rushing depth after Colts swipe Khalid Kareem from practice squad

The Colts snagged a good player from Cincinnati’s practice squad.

The Cincinnati Bengals lost a notable piece of the team before Week 12.

Khalid Kareem, a member of the team’s practice squad, ended up getting signed by the Indianapolis Colts.

Kareem, a fifth-round pick in 2020, consistently put up big flashes when actually on the field but had issues staying healthy. The team elected to roster Cam Sample and late-round rookie Jeff Gunter over him after a summer hamstring injury.

It’s a notable blow for the defense’s depth. Kareem even posted an 86.3 PFF grade last year over sparse playing time, though his attendance limited his upside.

Still, if the Bengals suffer injuries this winter and need to call up members of the practice squad, they’ll have to rely on the likes of Raymond Johnson III — or sign someone off another team’s practice squad.

Colts sign DE Khalid Kareem from Bengals practice squad

The Colts signed DE Khalid Kareem from the Bengals practice squad.

The Indianapolis Colts signed defensive end Khalid Kareem from the Cincinnati Bengals practice squad and waived safety Trevor Denbow, the team announced Tuesday.

Because Kareem was signed from the Bengals practice squad, he goes straight to the active roster for the Colts. This may be due to the lingering ankle injury Kwity Paye has been dealing with.

Kareem, 24, was a fifth-round pick with the Bengals in the 2020 NFL draft out of Notre Dame. He checked a lot of the pre-draft boxes that general manager Chris Ballard likes to see in his defensive ends, but the team ultimately passed on him.

In 23 career games, Kareem has recorded 28 tackles (14 solo), 1.0 sack, two tackles for loss and four quarterback hits.

Denbow signed with the Colts as an undrafted rookie free agent following the 2022 NFL draft and served as a special teams player after returning from the injured reserve list in Week 9.
