Hogs’ Menifield named SEC Player of the Week

Arkansas’ fortunes have changed since Keyon Menifield became eligible in mid-December.

Ask Average Joe Arkansas Fan and he may tell you the Razorbacks basketball fortunes changed the moment Keyon Menifield hit the floor.

The sophomore guard in his first semester of eligibility has been dynamite for Arkansas over his three games with the Hogs so far. His last time out was good enough, in fact, to earn him SEC Player of the Week honors.

Menifield, a 6-foot-1, 160-pound point guard who transferred from Washington before the school year started scored 32 points on 8 of 14 shooting from the field and 13 of 17 shooting from the line against UNC-Wilmington on Saturday.

That victory was Arkansas’ third straight as the team prepares next for SEC play. The Razorbacks host Auburn on Saturday at Bud Walton Arena for a 1 p.m. tip.

Menifield is averaging 15 points, 4.3 rebounds and 3 assists so far in his Arkansas career.

Menifield now eligible for Arkansas basketball

Keyon Menifield, the transfer from Washington, was given a waiver by the NCAA and is now immediately eligible for Arkansas basketball.

Arkansas basketball was searching for a jolt of adrenaline heading out of final exams and into January.

It appears they may have found it in Friday afternoon’s news dump.

[autotag]Keyon Menifield Jr.[/autotag] was not on scholarship and was not counting against the roster currently.

The Washington transfer came to Arkansas after being on the Pac-12 All-Freshman team last season with the Huskies. He has been with the Razorback program since the summer.

“It has been a long process that we had to work through, but we are excited for Keyon and are proud of how he handled the process,” Arkansas coach [autotag]Eric Musselman[/autotag] said. “Our staff and administration have worked hard to get this done and we appreciate their hard work. Keyon is an explosive point guard with great play-making ability.”

He will make his first appearance tomorrow at 5 p.m. in North Little Rock as the Razorbacks take on Lipscomb.

Menifield will be non-scholarship redshirt in 2023-24

Keyon Menifield, a guard who was the first portal addition by Eric Musselman back in early April, will be a non-scholarship redshirt and not play in 2023-24.

The basketball roster roulette wheel keeps spinning even when you’ve think it’s stopped.

On Friday, it was announced that Keyon Menifield, a guard that portaled to Arkansas from Washington back in early April, would be sitting out the 2023-24 season as a non-scholarship redshirt.

Menefield will still be allowed to practice with the Razorbacks, he just won’t suit up or play in any games.

This leaves a spot open at guard, but it’s unlikely that the coaches are actively looking at anyone else this late in the game.

With Devo Davis returning on top of the other guards that Eric Musselman landed in the portal, including El Ellis, Khalif Battle, Tramon Mark and Jeremiah Davenport, it doesn’t seem like it will be too much of a setback.

In fact, it may allow him to learn Musselman’s system and grow and mature and be ready in 2024-25 to have a huge year.

Arkansas lands Louisville transfer guard El Ellis from portal

Eric Musselman, Arkansas just landed another talented guard and he’s the former No. 1 JUCO prospect in the country.

Arkansas basketball continues to stock up on guards after Louisville transfer guard [autotag]El Ellis[/autotag] announced his commitment to the Razorbacks on Monday via Twitter.

Ellis is a 6-3, 180-pound combo guard that Razorback fans should be somewhat familiar with as he led an abysmal Louisville team when they faced Arkansas in the first round of the Maui Invitational last season. Ellis didn’t play well in the loss to Arkansas as he only scored 11 points on 4-16 FG shooting and had 7 turnovers.

However, those struggles don’t paint the whole picture as Ellis was the lone bright spot for the worst Louisville team in modern history. He averaged 17.7 points, 2.6 rebounds, 4.4 assists, 1.0 steals, 41.0 FG%, 31.9 3PT% and 81.0 FT% for a team that finished just 4-28 last season.

Ellis arrived at Louisville two seasons ago as the No. 1 JUCO prospect in the 2021 class. During his JUCO career at Tallahassee Community College, Ellis averaged 14.3 points, 3.9 rebounds, 4.5 assists, 47.9 FG%, 40.3 3PT% and 84.5 FT%.

Arkansas’ roster for next year still has needs in the paint which will likely be addressed soon, but Ellis adds another dynamic scorer who can get a bucket at any time. His addition is the fifth transfer commit of the off-season joining [autotag]Keyon Menifield[/autotag], [autotag]Tramon Mark[/autotag], [autotag]Khalif Battle[/autotag] and [autotag]Jeremiah Davenport[/autotag].

Arkansas basketball lands guard Khalif Battle from transfer portal

Eric Musselman adds another transfer guard and addresses Arkansas’ shooting woes from last season in the process.

After struggling to shoot from deep for the majority of last season, [autotag]Eric Musselman[/autotag] has addressed that need in the transfer portal with the addition of sharpshooting guard [autotag]Khalif Battle[/autotag] from Temple.

Battle committed to the Razorbacks on Wednesday after visiting Fayetteville over the weekend. He chose Arkansas over UCF, Villanova, Arizona, Memphis, Florida, Louisville, UCLA, LSU and others.

What Battle brings to the Razorbacks roster is something that they desperately needed last season: perimeter shooting. He appeared in every game for the Owls last year and averaged 32.2 minutes while coming off the bench. He finished the season averaging 17.9 points, 3.6 rebounds, 1.8 assists, 1.0 steals, 41.0% FG, 35.0% 3PT and 89.8 FT%.

With the addition of Battle, Arkansas has now added three transfer guards to replace the production of [autotag]Nick Smith Jr.[/autotag], [autotag]Ricky Council[/autotag] and [autotag]Devo Davis[/autotag]. [autotag]Keyon Menifield[/autotag] committed to the Razorbacks last week and [autotag]Tramon Mark[/autotag] committed on Sunday afternoon.

Arkansas isn’t likely to be done with portal additions as they’re still waiting on decisions from [autotag]Anthony Black[/autotag], [autotag]Jordan Walsh[/autotag] and [autotag]Makhi Mitchell[/autotag]. The current roster still has some holes to fill on the wing and in the frontcourt, which could be addressed soon.

The 2023-24 Arkansas basketball roster is taking shape, but is still far from complete.

First of many? Former Washington guard Keyon Menifield commits to Arkansas

Menifield averaged 10 points a game as a freshman last year with the Huskies. He fills a distinct need for Arkansas.

Things move quickly in the transfer portal sometimes. That translates to things moving quickly in each sport, too.

Arkansas basketball had quite the day, accordingly. Hours after junior guard Ricky Council declared for the NBA Draft, Hogs coach Eric Musselman had replaced him on the roster, ostensibly.

Former Washington guard Keyon Menifield committed to Arkansas via the transfer portal, On3 reported Tuesday afternoon. The Razorbacks beat Alabama, Louisville, Tennessee, Ohio State and, well, Menifield also considered staying put in Seattle.

Menifield, a 6-foot-1 point guard, played just one season with Huskies out of Flint, Michigan. He averaged 10 points a game and started 21 games. Washington went 16-16 overall and 8-12 in the Pac-12.

Menifield is unlikely to be the last player to commit to Arkansas out of the portal. Other than Council, the Hogs are also expected to lose Nick Smith Jr., who already declared for the draft, and could also lose guards Anthony Black and Devo Davis (who has also declared) and a number of players from the frontcourt.

Alabama MBB lands in top-six for Washington guard transfer Keyon Menifield

Washington transfer Keyon Menifield released his top-six schools on Sunday evening and included the Crimson Tide.

Washington transfer Keyon Menifield listed his top-six schools on Sunday evening. The six schools that made the cut were Alabama, Tennessee, Arkansas, Louisville, Washington, and Ohio State.

Menifield hails from Flint, Michigan which is located an hour away from Romulus where Alabama head coach Nate Oats coached the school’s basketball team.

As a freshman, Menifield started 21 games for the Huskies. He averaged 10.1 points per game and was named to the PAC-12 All-Freshman Team.

He is a twitchy guard that can attack the rim while also shooting well from beyond-the-arc. His style of play is somewhat similar to former Alabama guard Kira Lewis Jr.

If Alabama can land a commitment from Menifield, it would give them two transfer commitments this offseason. The other one being Wichita State transfer Jaykwon Walton. It would also strengthen an Alabama backcourt that could see Jahvon Quinerly depart for the NBA.

Menifield would be a nice addition on both ends of the floor as the Tide look to build their roster this offseason.

Vols emerge as top contender for Pac-12 All-Freshman guard

Tennessee basketball emerges as a top contender for Pac-12 All-Freshman guard.

Former Washington guard Keyon Menifield announced his top six schools on Sunday: Tennessee, Alabama, Louisville, Arkansas, Ohio State and Washington.

The 6-foot-1, 150-pound guard is from Flint, Michigan. He will have three years of eligibility remaining.

Menifield averaged 10 points, 3.1 assists, 2.9 rebounds per game and a 1.8 assist-turnover ratio. He was named to the Pac-12 All-Freshman team and was the only player to appear in all 32 games last season for the Huskies.

Before committing to Washington, Menifield was the leading scorer in the Nike Elite Youth Basketball League, averaging 22.6 points per game. He was named the Michigan Division 3 Player of the Year in 2021 at Beecher High School in Mt. Morris, Michigan.

Alabama MBB reaches out to highly-coveted, Washington transfer Keyon Menifield

Alabama’s coaching staff has reached out to several transfers up to this point. One of those players in Washington transfer Keyon Menifield.

Washington transfer Keyon Menifield officially entered the transfer portal on Tuesday. In less than 24 hours, he has received interest from a plethora of programs across the country. One of the programs that has reached out is Alabama.

Menifield spent one season in Seattle with the Huskies. He started in 21 of the 32 games that he played in. He averaged 10 points per game while shooting an impressive 41% from the field. Menifield also proved himself as a facilitator after having dished out 3.1 assists per game.

Alabama head coach Nate Oats is familiar with the talent in that area and has a history of recruiting players from Michigan. Oats was the high school basketball coach at Romulus High School for 12 years. Menifield is from Flint, Michigan which is located just over an hour away from Romulus, Michigan.

Alabama currently has 14 players on scholarship for next season. Granted, that accounts for Brandon Miller and Noah Clowney. Both are expected to enter the NBA draft. With that said, the Tide would have one scholarship available.

Both Menifield and the Tide would benefit if he were to commit. Menifield does a good job of going coast-to-coast. He presents challenges for opposing defenses with his raw speed and athleticism. Overall, his style of play would gel well in Alabama’s offense. A fair comparison for Menifield would be former Alabama guard Kira Lewis Jr.

Menifield is one of the few names that Alabama fans should be closely monitoring. Several others are Reese Dixon-Waters, Nate Calmese, Zack Austin, Kamari Lands, and Denver Jones. They have each heard from the Alabama coaching staff after having entered the transfer portal.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow the Alabama basketball program and its involvement in the transfer portal.
