Every player in Boston Celtics history who wore No. 51

This is every player in Boston’s history who wore the Celtics’ No. 51 jersey for at least one game.

The Boston Celtics have more retired jerseys than any other team in the NBA, but that doesn’t mean the rest of their jerseys have little history of interest tied to them.

In fact, with 17 titles to their name and decades of competitive basketball played in them, their unretired jersey numbers pack in some of the most history not hanging from the rafters of any team in the league. To that end, we have launched our accounting of that history, with every player in every jersey worn by more than one Celtics player in the storied franchise’s history accounted for.

Today’s installment focuses on the five players who wore No. 51 over the years.

Ex-Celtic guard Keyon Dooling joins Jazz as player development coach

Former Boston Celtics reserve guard Keyon Dooling has been hired by the Utah Jazz as a player development coach.

Former Boston Celtics guard Keyon Dooling has joined the Utah Jazz’ coaching staff, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

The former Celtic will be working under his former coach at the University of Missouri — Quin Snyder — in a player development role.

“Keyon is a fantastic addition for us on multiple levels and someone I’ve always had tremendous respect for since our time at Missouri where we formed a close bond that has continued throughout the years,” offered Snyder via statement Friday.

“He’s a natural leader who was a captain on multiple teams in the league,” he added, “and I have no doubt that the way he approached the game as a player will translate to the work he puts in with our roster on the court.”

Dooling released a statement on the hire as well, saying “I am so appreciative of the opportunity to join Coach Snyder’s staff.”

“Every former player who loves the game would leap at a chance like this. Player development has always been a cornerstone of Coach Snyder’s programs and I couldn’t be more excited to get on the court and embrace that process with this next generation of players.”

“My wife Natosha and I look forward to our family calling Salt Lake City home,” he added.

Dooling came to the Celtics in a trade in 2011 from the Milwaukee Bucks, who dealt the Fort Lauderdale native to Boston in exchange for the rights to Albert Miralles.

He would play for the team in the 2011-12 NBA season before retiring and joining the team as a player development coordinator.

That appointment was short-lived as the Memphis Grizzlies would sign him as a player the following April.

Dooling averaged 4 points and 1.1 assists per game as a Celtic.

Former Nets guard added to Utah Jazz coaching staff

Keyon Dooling is getting back on the bench after working for the National Basketball Players Association.

After working for the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) board for eight years, most recently taking on the role of wellness counselor and mental health advocate, Keyon Dooling is getting into coaching.

The Utah Jazz announced on Friday that the former New Jersey Nets guard has been added to Quin Snyder’s coaching staff.

Prior to his 13-year NBA career, during which he spent two years in a Nets uniform, Dooling played for Snyder in one of his two years at the University of Missouri.

“Keyon is a fantastic addition for us on multiple levels and someone I’ve always had tremendous respect for since our time at Missouri where we formed a close bond that has continued throughout the years,” Snyder said for the team’s official release. “He’s a natural leader who was a captain on multiple teams in the league and I have no doubt that the way he approached the game as a player will translate to the work he puts in with our roster on the court.”

Dooling added:

“I am so appreciative of the opportunity to join Coach Snyder’s staff. Every former player who loves the game would leap at a chance like this. Player development has always been a cornerstone of Coach Snyder’s programs and I couldn’t be more excited to get on the court and embrace that process with this next generation of players. My wife Natosha and I look forward to our family calling Salt Lake City home.”

On this day: Jimmy Rodgers fired; Kemba Walker, Keyon Dooling born

On this day, former Boston Celtics head coach Jimmy Rodgers was fired, and Celtics guards Kemba Walker and Keyon dooling were born.

On this day, former Boston Celtics head coach Jimmy Rodgers was fired in that role after dropping a first round matchup with the New York Knicks in the 1990 NBA Playoffs.

Rodgers joined the Celtics as an assistant under Bill Fitch in 1979, and stayed on with the organization after his departure in 1983, working under Celtics legend K.C. Jones, then replacing Jones as head coach upon his resignation in 1988.

Rodgers was dealt a rough hand in his first season with star forward Larry Bird out injured for much of the season.

While the first-round exit and poor records perhaps not up to par for the Celtics teams of old, the franchise inherited by Rodgers was heavily mortgaged in favor of an aging core that probably should have been broken up years earlier.

Rodgers finished with a 94-70 regular season record, and went 2 and 6 in the postseason, good for .573 and .250 winning percentages, respectively.
