Vikings DB coach Jerry Gray will not return to team in 2020

ESPN’s Courtney Cronin said he’s someone who could join Stefanski’s staff in Cleveland.

The changes on Minnesota’s coaching staff continue.

We already know that offensive coordinator Kevin Stefanski will be the next head coach of the Cleveland Browns, and that defensive coordinator George Edwards will not return in 2020.

Along with that, defensive backs coach Jerry Gray will not be back with the team in 2020. ESPN’s Courtney Cronin said he’s someone who could join Stefanski’s staff in Cleveland.

Gray has been with the Vikings since 2014, the first season that coach Mike Zimmer took over.

Feels like Vikings offensive coordinator will come internally

With Kevin Stefanski heading to Cleveland, the Vikings are yet again searching for an offensive coordinator.

With Kevin Stefanski heading to Cleveland to be the next head coach of the Browns, the Vikings are yet again searching for an offensive coordinator.

On Monday, Vikings coach Mike Zimmer told reporters that he wants to stick with the same type of system (zone-based) in 2020.

While it’s always fun and exciting to get a new person in the doors, it feels like this hire is going to be internal. The obvious choices right now appear to be Gary Kubiak, Klint Kubiak or Rick Dennison.

The elder Kubiak served as the team’s offensive advisor last season and is the brains behind most of the team’s offensive identity. The younger Kubiak was the team’s quarterbacks coach last season, while Dennison was the team’s offensive line coach.

The Vikings offense had its problems in 2019, but that seemed more because of lack of talent on the offensive line and depth at wide receiver rather than the overall scheme and philosophy.

While hiring externally might be a sexy move, remember the last time Minnesota did that it hired John DeFilippo. That experiment lasted just 13 games.

Report: Broncos expected to hire Pat Shurmur as OC

With Kevin Stefanski headed to Cleveland to be the Browns’ head coach, there was some thought that Shurmur could return to the Vikings.

After serving as head coach of the New York Giants for the last two years (and being fired), it looks like Pat Shurmur is headed to the Denver Broncos as an offensive coordinator per Mike Garafolo and Ian Rapoport.

With Kevin Stefanski headed to Cleveland to be the Browns’ head coach, there was some thought that Shurmur could return to the Vikings. Shurmur was the team’s offensive coordinator for the team’s 2017 run to the NFC Championship.

The Vikings will have to look elsewhere.

Jim Schwartz expected to remain Eagles DC after Browns agree to deal with Kevin Stefanski

The Cleveland Browns will hire Vikings offensive coordinator Kevin Stefanski as head coach

It appears Jim Schwartz will be returning to Philadelphia as the Eagles defensive coordinator, as Adam Schefter of ESPN.com is reporting that the Browns are set to name Vikings offensive coordinator Kevin Stefanski head coach.

Schwartz interviewed with the Browns on Wednesday and Eagles head coach Doug Pederson confirmed that he would return to the Birds if he didn’t secure the Cleveland job.

The Browns are set to interview Eagles VP of football operations, Andrew Berry for thei vacant GM position.

Doug Pederson says Jim Schwartz will return as Eagles DC if he doesn’t land Browns job

Eagles defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz not a finalist for Browns head coaching job

The Philadelphia Eagles are shaking up their coaching staff, firing offensive coordinator Mike Groh and wide receivers coach, Carson Walch. Most of the rumblings about the Birds coaching staff has centered on the future of defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz.

Schwartz interviewed for the Browns job on Wednesday and on Friday, Doug Pederson told 94WIP that he’ll remain the Eagles defensive coordinator unless he lands the gig in Cleveland.

Pederson’s announcement comes on the heels of a report from Ben Volin of the Boston Globe, who confirmed that the Eagles defensive coordinator was not a finalist for the job.

The Browns are likely to choose from the Patriots’ Josh McDaniels, Minnesota’s Kevin Stefanski, and Buffalo’s Brian Daboll.

All three are offensive coordinators and would be needed for the reclamation project that is Baker Mayfield.

Vikings OC Kevin Stefanski doesn’t want to talk about his interview with Browns

With Stefanski’s interview with the Browns set for Thursday, he was asked during availability about it.

Vikings offensive coordinator Kevin Stefanski is being interviewed by the Cleveland Browns for the second-straight year for their head-coaching vacancy.

While that’s not a great sign for the Browns, it is good news for Stefanski. Stefanski was also supposed to interview with the Panthers, but they hired Matt Rhule prior to any interview.

With Stefanski’s interview with the Browns set for Thursday, he was asked during Wednesday’s availability about it. And Stefanski gave the answer you’d expect.

“I’d prefer to just keep the focus on what we’re doing at San Francisco, our players, and really not worry about any periphery right now,” Stefanski said.

It’s always a weird time of year for coordinators in these positions. While you want to give your all for your team and its next game, there’s also the pressure of preparing for the biggest job interview of your life.

It seems like Stefanski is dealing with it correctly.

Report: Panthers to hire Matt Rhule as head coach, not Kevin Stefanski

The Panthers were scheduled to meet with Vikings offensive coordinator Kevin Stefanski on Thursday to fill that vacancy. It appears Stefanski will have the block cleared from his schedule.

Stefanski is still in the running for the Cleveland Browns’ vacancy at head coach. That interview could be on Thursday. We’ll update you when reports come through.

It will be a busy week for Vikings offensive coordinator Kevin Stefanski.

As he and the team prepares to take on the 49ers in the Divisional Round of the playoffs, he’ll also be preparing for at least one interview. Per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Panthers will be interviewing Stefanski for their head-coaching vacancy on Thursday in Minneapolis.

Schefter also notes that the Browns could interview him that day as well.

Stefanski also interviewed with the Browns last season. The Browns instead hired Freddie Kitchens, which turned out to be not such a great move.

Stefanski, 37, is in his first full season as offensive coordinator. In 2019, the Vikings ranked seventh in points score and 13th in total yards.

Panthers 2020 coach search: Updates on Mike McCarthy, Josh McDaniels, Kevin Stefanski

The Panthers are in the process of reviewing a handful candidates for their head coach vacancy, with several interviews lined up this week.

The Panthers are in the process of reviewing a handful candidates for their head coach vacancy, with several interviews lined up this week.

There are some updates to get to from over the weekend and this morning. Here’s the latest on what’s going on.

Cowboys hiring Mike McCarthy

First up, one of Carolina’s top choices is off the market. According to a new report by Jay Glazer, the Cowboys have agreed to terms with former Packers coach Mike McCarthy to replace Jason Garrett, who they fired on Sunday.

McCarthy had interviewed with the Panthers twice and shared Pittsburgh connections with team owner David Tepper. He was the most experienced candidate among those in the running for the Panthers job.

With McCarthy off the board, the team will focus on other names. Here’s how a couple of them did during Wild Card Weekend.

Josh McDaniels’ Patriots upset by Titans

The dynasty in New England may finally have ended on Saturday night, when the Patriots were upset by the Titans in embarrassing fashion on their home field. Tennessee’s suffocating defense held the Pats to just 13 points. Tom Brady completed just 20 of 37 passes, had no touchdowns, one interception and a 59.4 passer rating.

While it was a lackluster performance, it’s important to point out a few things. First, McDaniels did not have weapons to work with this season. The retirement of Rob Gronkowski hit Brady hard, who was unable to get into a rhythm with any receiver not named Julian Edelman, who eventually found himself subjected to double coverage. The Pats were desperate enough to second a second-round pick to the Falcons for Mohamed Sanu, which did not work out well at all. Brady is also clearly on the decline physically, which further limited what McDaniels could do.

In any case, one game should not be an indictment of McDaniels’ record. The Patriots had an elite offense for most of his time with the team and he’s still a strong candidate.

Kevin Stefanski’s Vikings beat the Saints

Another aging legendary quarterback fell this weekend, with Drew Brees and the Saints getting stunned by the Vikings in a thrilling 26-20 home loss. Again, it’s only one game but Carolina’s candidate looked much sharper in this one than McDaniels.

Offensive coordinator Kevin Stefanski came up with a good game-plan to beat an underrated Saints defense. The Vikings wisely relied heavily on Dalvin Cook to carry them. He finished the game with 130 yards from scrimmage and scored two touchdowns – a line worthy of Christian McCaffrey.

Kirk Cousins needed to make a few plays to put Minnesota over the top though and he finally came through. His fantastic 43-yard long ball to Adam Thielen put his team in position for the game-winning touchdown, which he threw on a goal line fade to tight end Kyle Rudolph.

The Panthers were set to interview Stefanski on Thursday. With the Vikings moving on to face the 49ers in the divisional round, that may have to be pushed back to a later date.
