Kevin Pierre-Louis fined $15,000 for hit on Matthew Stafford in Week 10

Kevin Pierre-Louis is being fined $15,000 for a hit that he put on Lions’ QB Matthew Stafford in last week’s loss to Detroit.

The NFL announced a bunch of fines to players on Saturday afternoon, one of which came down for Washington’s linebacker Kevin Pierre-Louis for a hit he laid on Detroit Lions’ QB Matthew Stafford in the Week 10 loss. The hit drew a penalty for lowering his head.

The size of the fine, $15,000, is a bit odd, considering that Washington linebacker Jon Bostic was fined just $12,000 a few weeks ago for his hit on Dallas Cowboys QB Andy Dalton, which was a much more serious shot than the one that KPL laid on Stafford a week ago. Dalton ended up motionless on the ground and was later placed in the concussion protocol. He recently remarked that he was surprised by how little Bostic was fined for the hit.

So why was Pierre-Louis’ hit more costly than Bostic’s? That’s a question that we don’t have the answer to, but Washington’s linebacker will be walking around with some lighter pockets after this week.

Rivera says he is “concerned at the play of the linebackers” after loss to Giants

Washington’s linebacking core combined for just 18 total tackles on Sunday, and Rivera thinks their being too hesitant on the field.

Coming into Sunday’s game against the New York Giants, the Washington Football Team had one of the top defenses in the NFL, with a No. 4 ranking in DVOA and a cornerback who led the league in interceptions.

So what happened? How were the Giants able to put up 23 points and over 160 rushing yards? The answer is in the middle of the defense, and it’s something that is concerning for Ron Rivera.

“In all honesty, I’m concerned at the play of the linebackers,” Rivera said, via NBC Sports Washington. “I think it’s a group of guys that are hesitant and still aren’t pulling the trigger and letting it go and just getting downhill and making some plays.”

That group of linebackers is Cole Holcomb, Jon Bostic, Kevin Pierre-Louis, and Shaun Dion Hamilton. They combined for just 18 total tackles on Sunday and left a lot to be desired at the position. Going forward, with two former NFL linebackers now coaching the team in Rivera and Jack Del Rio, there is an assumption that things may get better, but comments like these make you think about the upcoming NFL draft, and the guy that many people are pegging Washington to select in LB Micah Parsons out of Penn State.

They need some more talent at the position, and he can bring it.

PFF names LB Kevin Pierre-Louis their ‘Secret Superstar’ of Week 2

Kevin Pierre-Louis had a breakout game for Washington on Sunday, racking up 15 total tackles and helping hold down the center of the defense.

After the Washington game ended on Sunday, there were very few things to be excited about if you sport the Burgundy & Gold following a 30-15 loss to the Cardinals, one that seemed like it could have been a whole lot worse.

However, one of the few players who provided a bright spot was Washington linebacker Kevin Pierre-Louis, who was signed this offseason from the Chicago Bears. Pierre-Louis finished the game with 15 total tackles and was constantly finding a way to make plays from sideline to sideline.

At Washington Wire, we named him our Player of the Game for his efforts on defense, and now Pro Football Focus is giving him the honor of ‘Secret Superstar of the Week.’

Pierre-Louis is the perfect example of an NFL Journeyman — he’s on his fifth team in five years and never really saw ample time on the field until late in 2019 with the Bears. He entered in Week 4 for the Bears when injuries hit the unit and performed well, producing an 89.8 PFF grade. He then logged only three snaps until seeing the field for 187 snaps over the final four games. In that span, Pierre-Louis was the league’s highest-graded off-ball linebacker (89.3), and he was productive in coverage and as a blitz weapon. As a result, Pierre-Louis was the player on Washington’s roster we felt had the best chance of breaking out in 2020. Based on his Week 2, the late-career breakout might actually happen.

Pierre-Louis was lights-out in coverage, making numerous stops in a blink of an eye. He had five passing stops on the day en route to a 93.0 coverage grade. Both of those marks led all off-ball linebackers in Week 2. Pierre-Louis might have followed a journeyman’s path to this point, but he looks like a secret superstar in the making.

The breakout from KPL is coming at a perfect time, too, with both Thomas Davis and Cole Holcomb banged up. It is unclear when either of them will be able to return to the field and provide an impact, but in the meantime, Pierre-Louis has stepped up and become one of the better defenders for Washington outside of the front-four.

Kevin Pierre-Louis named Washington Wire’s player of the game in 30-15 loss

With 15 tackles and a number of big stops, Kevin Pierre-Louis earns our player of the game award in this Week 2 loss to Arizona.

It’s not always easy to focus on the positives after your team is blown out on the road, and even though Washington wasn’t exactly blown out on Sunday, losing 30-15 to the Arizona Cardinals, there are a number of positives to take away from the afternoon of action.

One of the biggest positives for the Burgundy & Gold was seeing how big of an impact linebacker Kevin Pierre Louis could have down the stretch. Because of this, we are naming KPL our Washington Wire Player of the Game.

Pierre-Louis finished Sunday’s contest with a team-high 15-total tackles, 10 of which were solo. Throughout the day, he was flying around from sideline to sideline, and he stepped up big in a couple of huge moments.

Check out this tackle that KPL had on a third-and-short to open the second half, forcing Arizona to punt:

It’s plays like those that won’t show up in a box score as anything more than a tackle, but something that can spark a defense and get the team going after a tough first half.

This play came on the first drive out of half time, and Washington desperately needed a stop to try and slow the bleeding suffered in the first two quarters. KPL stepped up and made an incredible play on Chase Edmunds, keeping them from extending the drive.

We’ve heard some great things about KPL throughout training camp, and we’re finally getting a chance to see it presented on the field. Hopefully, he is able to keep it up, and this is the start of a long and solid career in Washington.

Pro Football Focus predicts LB Kevin Pierre-Louis to be breakout player in 2020

PFF recently pegged Washington LB Kevin Pierre-Louis to have a breakout season in 2020, which would be huge for the defense.

One of the most notable players thus far the Washington Football Team during training camp has been the newest linebacker, Kevin Pierre-Louis, who signed with the team this past offseason.

After an underwhelming career with several teams in the NFL, KPL has been able to step up and earn a starting spot on the Washington defense, turning a lot of heads along the way. We’ve heard from players and coaches who have marveled at his ability, and now Pro Football Focus is naming Pierre-Louis their breakout star for Washington this season.

Washington’s linebacker unit is a true wildcard, but Kevin Pierre-Louis could help that with a late-career breakout year in 2020. He has been an NFL journeyman, playing a snap for four teams in six years in the league and never seeing ample time in any sizeable stretch until late in 2019 with the Chicago Bears. He entered in Week 4 for the Bears when injuries hit the unit and performed well by producing an 89.8 PFF grade.

He then logged only three snaps until seeing the field for 187 snaps over the final four games. In that span, Pierre-Louis was the league’s highest-graded off-ball linebacker (89.3), as he was productive in coverage and as a blitz weapon. It’s rare to see a player break out in Year 7, but Pierre-Louis might defy those odds, given what he showed last season.

It could be as simple as a coaching change that made things click for KPL this offseason, now playing under Ron Rivera and Jack Del Rio, two former linebackers themselves. What’s important is that Washington’s linebacking unit is in need of some help, and Pierre-Louis seems like the might be the guy to bring it. If he can live up to expectations, the defense only gets more dominant.

Chicago Bears’ 6 biggest losses during the 2020 offseason

The Bears have made some changes this offseason, which will affect how Chicago’s roster pans out this season.

Following a disappointing 2019 season, the Chicago Bears will be looking to rebound heading into the 2020 season. But they’ll be doing it without some familiar faces on their roster.

The Bears have made some changes this offseason, which will affect how Chicago’s roster pans out this season. There were some expected departures, including outside linebacker Leonard Floyd and tight end Trey Burton. But not all of those losses serve to benefit the Bears.

Here are the Bears’ six biggest losses this offseason:

2020 team: Las Vegas Raiders

Nick Kwiatkoski was a big reason why the Bears defense remained a dominant force following a season-ending injury to Danny Trevathan in Week 10. Kwiatkoski shined in relief of an injured Trevathan, where he tallied 76 tackles, eight tackles for loss and four pass deflections. Ultimately, the Bears chose to re-sign Trevathan over Kwiatkoski, and Chicago lost valuable depth at inside linebacker. Kwiatkoski’s impressive performance earned him a three-year, $21 million deal with the Las Vegas Raiders, which includes $13.75 million guaranteed.

Bears have compiled a handful of compensatory picks this free agency

The Bears have lost some key players to free agency. But it hasn’t been without its compensation – 4 compensatory picks, to be exact.

The Chicago Bears have lost some key members of their roster to free agency. But it hasn’t been without its compensation.

Compensatory draft picks, to be precise.

Following the first wave of the NFL’s free agency, the Bears have racked up four compensatory draft picks for 2021.

According to Over The Cap, the Bears currently are projected to receive four compensatory selections: Three sixth-rounders and one seventh-rounder.

Those come courtesy of new contracts for quarterback Chase Daniel, defensive lineman Nick Williams, safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix and inside linebacker Kevin Pierre-Louis.

Daniel continues to make the most of his journeyman backup quarterback role as he signed a three-year, $13 million deal. Williams’ impressive performance with the Bears last season earned him a two-year deal with the Lions worth $10 million.

Meanwhile in the NFC East, Clinton-Dix headed to Dallas on a one-year deal that’s set to give him $4 million and $2.5 million guaranteed. Pierre-Louis landed with the Redskins, where he’s set to make $3.45 million.

The Bears were previous projected to land a fifth-round compensatory pick for inside linebacker Nick Kwiatkoski, who agreed to terms with the Raiders. But the signing of All-Pro pass rusher Robert Quinn negated that compensatory selection.

The Bears earned a compensatory pick for 2020 — a fourth-rounder for safety Adrian Amos, who departed for the Packers last offseason. But Chicago traded that fourth-round pick for quarterback Nick Foles.

If these latest projections hold up, the Bears will get some valuable draft capital heading into 2021.

Bears looking at three 6th-round compensatory picks for 2021

The Bears have lost some valuable players to free agency. But they’re not without their potential compensation.

According to Over The Cap, the Bears are currently looking at a projection of three sixth-round compensatory picks for 2021.

Those come courtesy of new contracts for defensive lineman Nick Williams, inside linebacker Kevin Pierre-Louis and quarterback Chase Daniel.

Williams will sign a two-year deal worth $10 million with the Lions, which will keep him int he NFC North. Pierre-Louis landed with the Redskins, where he’s set to make $3.45 million.

Meanwhile, Daniel continues to navigate the NFL better than any back-up ever. He’s set to sign a three-year deal with the Lions that will give him $13 million.

Redskins agree to 1-year deal with ILB Kevin Pierre-Louis

Kevin Pierre-Louis shined in relief of an injured Roquan Smith in the final four games last season. Now, he gets paid.

The Chicago Bears have lost another valuable defensive reserve to free agency.

Former Bears inside linebacker Kevin Pierre-Louis has agreed to a one-year deal with the Washington Redskins, according to NFL insider Ian Rapoport. The deal is worth $3.45 million with incentives.

For comparison, general manager Ryan Pace signed Pierre-Louis for $805 thousand last year.

Pierre-Louis flashed near the end of the 2019 season, where he played in relief of the injured Roquan Smith. Pierre-Louis had 28 tackles and one interception in the final four games.

The Bears re-signed inside linebacker Danny Trevathan to a three-year deal last week, locking up a valuable member of their defense. But considering some of the moves Chicago has made in free agency thus far — signing pass rusher Robert Quinn and tight end Jimmy Graham — they didn’t have the money to extend Pierre-Louis.

But Pierre-Louis isn’t the first defensive player Chicago lost to free agency. Inside linebacker Nick Kwiatkoski is headed to the Las Vegas Raiders and defensive lineman Nick Williams is staying in the NFC North with the Detroit Lions.

The interesting thing is that all three of those players weren’t starters in 2019. In fact, they all filled in for injured starters, and they certainly made it worth their while, as they’ve signed new deals elsewhere.

Redskins agree to one-year deal with LB Kevin Pierre-Louis, worth up to $3.45M

The Redskins have added to their LB core by signing Pierre-Louis, who is a favorite of many defensive coordinators.

The Washington Redskins are adding to their linebacking core, adding veteran Kevin Pierre-Louis, who was formerly with the Chicago Bears.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Pierre-Louis is a lesser-known player who is a favorite of many defensive coordinators across the league. This likely brought him into favor with Redskins DC Jack Del Rio and head coach Ron Rivera.

According to Rapoport, the deal with the Redskins is for one year, worth up to $3.45 million. Pierre-Louis will now play in a linebacker rotation alongside Jon Bostic, Shaun Dion-Hamilton, Cole Holcomb and Reuben Foster.

Pierre-Louis was drafted by the Seattle Seahawks in the fourth round in 2014, and he has played with the New York Jets and Chicago Bears since. In 2019, he started three games for the Bears and had 37 total tackles.
