Texans release LB Kevin Pierre-Louis

The Houston Texans have released linebacker Kevin Pierre-Louis as they trim their roster to 53 players.

The Houston Texans are going with a youth movement in their linebacking corps.

According to Aaron Wilson from the Pro Football Network, the Texans have released linebacker Kevin Pierre-Louis as part of the team’s efforts to finalize a 53-man roster by 3:00 p.m. Central Time Tuesday.

Pierre-Louis only played in nine games for the Texans last season, starting in one of them. The Texans also have second-year linebacker Garret Wallow coming into his own, and even selected Alabama linebacker Christian Harris in the third round of this year’s draft.

The former Seattle Seahawks 2014 fourth-round pick generated 10 combined tackles and a fumble recovery last season for Houston.

Texans LB Kevin Pierre-Louis sees promise in rookie Christian Harris

Houston Texans linebacker Kevin Pierre-Louis believes that rookie Christian Harris is a “special talent.”

HOUSTON — The Houston Texans shored up their linebacking corps by adding former Alabama product Christian Harris with their third-round selection in the 2022 NFL draft.

Houston already had youth at the position with Garret Wallow, a 2021 fifth-rounder, but the addition of Harris has provided younger reinforcements for veterans Kamu Grugier-Hill, Christian Kirksey, and Kevin Pierre-Louis.

Pierre-Louis has watched Harris throughout the offseason program and training camp, and gave a glowing endorsement of the 6-2, 232-pound linebacker.

“That kid, he’s a special talent,” Pierre-Louis said. “I’ve been in the league long enough to notice things in guys, and he has that ‘it’ factor for sure. I’m excited to see him really do his thing at this level. The sky’s the limit, honestly. As generic as that sounds, I truly believe the sky’s the limit for him.”

Although Pierre-Louis may not be adept enough with analogies to encapsulate Harris’ talent, a further elaboration demonstrated specifically what makes Harris an asset to the linebacking corps.

“It’s the athleticism, the way he approaches the game as a rookie,” said Pierre-Louis. “He already has that professional mindset. I see him — I’m a guy, I’m older, so I’m always getting in early, doing things for my body, and seeing a rookie come in and do that already, it really shows where his mindset is and what he’s trying to do for this team.”

Harris ran a 4.44 at the NFL Scouting Combine, and even being around Harris has had teammates such as Kirksey remark the rookie may be the fastest linebacker on the team.

Begrudingly, Pierre-Louis would also give the rookie that compliment.

Said Pierre-Louis: “I’m not going to lie, yeah. As much as I don’t want to say it as a competitor, that kid can move. Once again, once he figures it out in our system, he’s going to do wonderful things.”

The Texans will get to see how well Harris moves in coach Lovie Smith’s Tampa 2 scheme when they take on the New Orleans Saints Aug. 13 at NRG Stadium in the preseason opener.

Texans restructure contract of LB Kevin Pierre-Louis

The Houston Texans will bring back linebacker Kevin Pierre-Louis on a restructured contract for 2022.

The Houston Texans have created a little salary cap space with the help from a veteran.

According to Aaron Wilson of the Pro Football Network, the Texans have restructured the contract of linebacker Kevin Pierre-Louis, who originally signed a two-year contract worth $8 million last offseason. Now, the 30-year-old will finish out his last year with the Texans with a $2.4 million salary with $1.2 million guaranteed. Originally Pierre-Louis’ contract for the final year was $3.5 million guaranteed.

Pierre-Louis played in nine games for Houston in 2021, starting in one of them. The former Seattle Seahawks 2014 fourth-round pick generated 10 combined tackles and a fumble recovery amid his 29 defensive snaps and 195 special teams snaps.

Lovie Smith, who was the Texans’ defensive coordinator last season, liked Pierre-Louis’ ability to provide depth at linebacker and also play special teams.

“Getting a good football player like KPL (Kevin Pierre-Louis) back helps,” Smith told reporters on Oct. 7, 2021. “He has had some injuries, so we’re anxious to get him into the mix, just not as linebacker but on the special teams, too.”

The most defensive snaps Pierre-Louis saw in a game was 22 against the Indianapolis Colts in Week 13, a 31-0 loss at NRG Stadium.

Texans activate LB Kevin Pierre-Louis from injured reserve, elevate C-G Cole Toner

The Houston Texans have activated linebacker Kevin Pierre-Louis from injured reserve and have elevated guard Cole Toner from the practice squad.

The Houston Texans have made a couple of moves ahead of their Week 7 showdown with the Arizona Cardinals Sunday at 3:25 p.m. Central Time at State Farm Stadium.

Houston activated linebacker Kevin Pierre-Louis from injured reserve. The 6-0, 231-pound linebacker had been placed on injured reserve on Sept. 16 after sustaining a hamstring injury at the end of preseason. Pierre-Louis will be eligible to see his first playing time of the 2021 campaign.

The Texans also used one of their standard elevations on center-guard Cole Toner. The former Los Angeles Charger could also his first action of the season as the Texans are working through some availability issues along the interior offensive line. Starting center Justin Britt is questionable with a knee injury, and Justin McCray could start once more in his place. Houston would need more depth along the offensive line.

If Toner were to get in the game, it would also be his first action of the season.
