While the Detroit Lions didn’t make any transactions on the NFL’s official log on Tuesday, several familiar names made appearances in the “tryouts” section.

Houston was apparently the place to be for ex-Lions on the tryout circuit. Two former Detroit players were auditioning for the Texans, most notably wide receiver Danny Amendola. The veteran slot receiver, a Houston-area native, was joined by CB Cre’von LeBlanc, who was with the Lions in 2018.

Running back Kerryon Johnson, fresh off his injury settlement with the Philadelphia Eagles, was in Las Vegas to work out for the Raiders. Safety Alijah Holder, who was cut by the Lions last week, was also in Las Vegas. One-time starting fullback Nick Bawden tried out for the Patriots.

None of the players were immediately signed by the respective teams. This is the first time Amendola, 35, has worked for any teams since his Lions contract expired after two years as Detroit’s starting slot receiver.

Former Eagles’ RB Kerryon Johnson is now a free agent after clearing waivers

The Eagles signed Kerryon Johnson with the idea that he could add talent to the running back group if fully healthy. Johnson had good moments during the first two weeks of training camp but was eventually sidelined with a knee injury.

After clearing waivers with an injury designation, Johnson is now a free agent per Tom Pelissero.

Johnson, a second-round pick of the Lions in 2018, started 16 of his 34 appearances with Detroit, rushing for 1,225 yards and eight touchdowns on 283 carries before knee injuries derailed him.

Eagles waive ex-Lions RB Kerryon Johnson with an injury designation

The Lions waived their former 2nd-round pick in May because he couldn’t stay healthy

Former Lions running back Kerryon Johnson continues to have issues staying on the field. Johnson was one of the players waived by the Philadelphia Eagles in the first round of roster cuts on Tuesday.

The Eagles waived Johnson with an injury designation. He injured the knee in that team’s preseason opener and was designated week-to-week, but the Eagles opted to waive Johnson instead. If he goes unclaimed on waivers, he can revert to the Eagles injured list or work out an injury settlement.

Johnson was a popular second-round pick by the Lions in 2018 but he’s struggled through numerous injuries, some of which predate his NFL career. The Eagles quickly claimed him in May when the Lions waived him, but the injury bug keeps biting Johnson.

The former Auburn great gets waived.

The former Auburn Tiger has been let go again.

After being cut by the Detroit Lions earlier in the year, the Philadelphia Eagles had to get their roster down to 85 players.

A casualty of that was Kerryon Johnson. The former SEC Offensive Player of the Year has had a hard time staying healthy in the league.

He was listed as week-to-week with a knee injury by the Eagles not long ago. He missed the team’s preseason game Thursday night.

Johnson was selected in the second round by the Detroit Lions in the 2018 NFL draft.

Jordan Howard’s chances of making the Eagles roster improved after Philadelphia waived running back Kerryon Johnson along with three others.

Johnson was listed as week-to-week with a knee injury and could end up on injured reserve if he goes through waivers unclaimed.

A former second-round pick of the Lions, the vastly talented Johnson has battled knee injuries since his explosive rookie season.

As the Eagles sit less than 24 hours away from their preseason opener, several intense position battles will begin to play out, with huge ramifications for everyone involved.

ESPN recently looked at the camp battles to watch for all 32 NFL teams.

For the Eagles, the position battle to watch is the scuffle taking place behind Miles Sanders for carries and catches.

Left tackle was the competition to watch entering camp, but Jordan Mailata appears to have taken a sizable lead over Andre Dillard. The attention turns to running back, where there’s sorting out to do behind Miles Sanders. Rookie Kenneth Gainwell and Boston Scott are fighting for snaps, while Jordan Howard, Kerryon Johnson, and blazer Jason Huntley jockey for spots on the 53-man roster. Gainwell has received the most pass-catching opportunities thus far, while Boston Scott’s usage rate suggests that he’ll be here for the long haul. The battle could come down to Kerryon Johnson against Jason Huntley.

Report: Dolphins filed waiver claim on former Lions RB Kerryon Johnson

Report: Dolphins filed waiver claim on former Lions RB Kerryon Johnson

Consider yourselves on notice, Miami Dolphins running backs. The franchise may have balked at the idea of taking a running back early in the NFL draft for the second consecutive year in 2021, but that doesn’t mean that the team isn’t going to be in the market for the right fits to add to the room. And, as we found out according to a report from ESPN’s Field Yates this morning, the Dolphins very nearly found the right add-on to the running back in the immediate aftermath of the 2021 NFL draft courtesy of former Detroit Lions running back Kerryon Johnson.

Johnson, who was formerly a 2nd-round draft choice by Detroit in 2017, is a powerful runner who saw his share of carries whittled away by the Lions after the team drafted one of the backs commonly associated with the Dolphins in 2020: D’Andre Swift.

The Dolphins did what they could to make it happen, filing a waiver claim to add Johnson to the expanded roster after he was cut by Detroit. But the Dolphins were beaten to the punch by the Philadelphia Eagles, who owned a higher priority waiver claim and were therefore granted the rights to Johnson and his rookie contract for the 2021 season.

Miami does have some power in their backfield courtesy of Malcolm Brown, who the team signed to a 1-year deal earlier this offseason as well as the presence of Gerrid Doaks, a 7th-round draft choice out of Cincinnati in last month’s NFL draft. But it should be considered telling that Miami appeared to be in the market for another addition as well — meaning we should expect the team to continue to kick the tires on potential running back add-ons throughout the course of the summer months before the start of the 2021 season.

The Dolphins have four months from today to find any additions they deem worthwhile for the backfield before the season kicks off in a trip to Foxborough to play the Patriots in Week 1.
