Explaining Chiefs use of Kermit Mahomes puppet controversy as motivation vs Raiders

The Chiefs are said to have not forgotten about the Kermit Mahomes puppet that showed up at Raiders training camp. We explain what’s behind it.

It’s game day in Las Vegas with the Chiefs in town. It’s the first game between the Raiders and Chiefs this season. And the Chiefs have plenty of motivation considering they are facing the last team to beat them. And they did it on Christmas Day last year.

But apparently that’s not enough. No, as predicted the undefeated reigning Super Bowl champs are using this stupid, media manufactured controversy as some form of extra motivation when facing the Raiders today.

Some of you may not follow these things as closely as we do, so for those of you with lives outside of football in the offseason, let’s go back and see how this came about.

Back in late July, when the Raiders were in training camp in Costa Mesa, they had some bleachers set up and were allowing a few fans to attend each day. One of the fans brought a goofy Kermit the Frog puppet and put a little Mahomes jersey on it with a curly wig.

Then, after practice, when some of the players came to the side to sign autographs, he tossed it to rookie Trey Taylor, who understandably thought it was hilarious and proceeded to pick it up and put it on his hand and play with it.

Everyone had a good laugh, and another fan caught it on his camera and tweeted it out.

Keep in mind, the Mahomes Kermit stuff goes way back. His voice sounds like Kermit. It’s no secret. Everyone has fun with it, including Mahomes himself who was asked about it on Super Bowl media day back in February.

Despite that, some rather irresponsible media accounts, who were not on hand at Raiders camp to see how the whole Kermit doll thing transpired, began immediately wildly speculating that this puppet was brought to camp *by* Raiders players who were passing it around *among each other* and mocking Mahomes.

The person who originally posted the video deleted it when they realized how the media was seizing upon it and had misconstrued that the doll belonged to a fan and the only way it was being “passed around” was between fans.

Not only that, it was a young rookie in his first NFL training camp who picked it up. Someone who had never donned a Raiders jersey, let alone been a part of this rivalry or had ever faced Mahomes or the Chiefs in a game.

Was it a stupid move by Taylor? Oh, most definitely. Quite immature. And he was admonished by his head coach for doing it. In other words, the team did not approve of it. It was a stupid move by a young kid who will learn from it and which had absolutely nothing to do with the team.

No matter, message quickly got to Chiefs media who asked Mahomes about it and instead of just brushing it off as silly nonsense, Mahomes gave the media a nice red meat soundbite in response, saying “It’ll get handled when it gets handled” which Schefter put in his tweet about how the Chiefs “have not forgotten” about it.

And now, of course, the media is bringing up their own creation again, to get the fans worked up all over again.

The whole thing is one of the best examples of how the media has become an instigator, creating controversy where there shouldn’t be any and thus inserting themselves into this rivalry. And the Chiefs are willing and enthusiastic participants in this because — for whatever reason — are always looking for another reason to get motivated.

The loss on Christmas Day should be plenty for a dominant Chiefs team to take down a Raiders team in utter disarray, but, by all means, lets revisit the dumbest controversy of the offseason and run with it all over again.

Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes discusses Raiders rivalry, Kermit The Frog doll video

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes spoke with reporters on Wednesday about the latest chapter in the rivalry with the Las Vegas Raiders kicking off this Sunday.

“We know we’re gonna get their their best shot. I mean, that’s kind of how it’s been every single week,” said Mahomes. “But obviously, when you play a divisional opponent, like I’ve said in the past, (there) is a real rivalry between our two teams and our two organizations. You’re gonna get their best shot, and we’re gonna go out there and match that and let the best team win.”

In July, the Raiders fired the first shot ahead of the new season against the Chiefs with their viral Kermit the Frog doll video comparing it to Mahomes. The reigning Super Bowl MVP addressed his nonconcern with the clip heading into Sunday’s showdown.

“I don’t know if you would say resonates with me,” said Mahomes. “I think just knowing that the competitive spirit that they have on that side is going to match the competitive spirit that we have, I think it’s going to be a fun football game that we’re going to get the best out of each and every player on that football field. And like I said, the best team will win.”

The Chiefs’ last defeat came last Christmas Day to the Raiders at Arrowhead Stadium. The visit to Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas will also be Kansas City’s first time back since winning Super Bowl LVIII.

On Thursday, the Las Vegas Raiders fired the first shot ahead of the new season against the Kansas City Chiefs with their viral Kermit the Frog doll video. Patrick Mahomes as the joke’s target didn’t sit well with Chiefs Kingdom, but they didn’t have to wait long for the three-time Super Bowl MVP’s response.

Mahomes was able to share his thoughts on the ridiculous video during his press conference with reporters after Friday’s practice.

“Still early in the year, stuff like that happens,” said Mahomes. “It’ll get handled when it gets handled.”

The short video went viral with Raiders rookie safety Trey Taylor utilizing the doll. Mahomes seemed undaunted by the situation as he responded that no one on the Chiefs’ side sent him the video or discussed it for bulletin board material.

“Not really, honestly, everybody kind of just lets me play,” said Mahomes. “They know how I am, so they don’t need to send me anything to keep me motivated.”

Mahomes holds a career record of 10-2 against the Raiders and has controlled the rivalry since becoming the Chiefs starter. The ability to shrug off the viral video is taking the focus away from him and back on team development during training camp.

The fuel for the Kansas City Chiefs and Las Vegas Raiders’ rivalry never runs low in their yearly battles for supremacy in the AFC West. In the early days of training camp, we already have more bulletin board material months before the rivals’ first meeting in 2024.

A video of the Raiders players joking around with a Kermit the Frog doll dressed as Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has gone viral on social media. Mahomes’ voice has often been compared to the legendary Muppets character in past years, and the Raiders seem to have taken it to another level with their version as a puppet wearing a wig and small Mahomes jersey.

Safety Trey Taylor is the Raiders player using the doll poorly by imitating the three-time Super Bowl MVP and repeatedly saying the infamous ‘I’m Here’ line from Mahomes during his Monday Night Football performance against Las Vegas in 2022.

Mahomes and the Chiefs split their two meetings with the Raiders last season, which included the disappointing loss on Christmas Day at Arrowhead Stadium. Kansas City doesn’t need more motivation heading into the new season, but this video could be the extra spark to propel the squad for the unprecedented three-peat.

The Raiders mocking Patrick Mahomes with a Kermit the Frog puppet doesn’t seem smart

This might not work out for the Raiders.

The Oakland Raiders really don’t seem all that concerned about trolling Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes with a specially tailored Kermit the Frog puppet.

Mahomes’ AFC West rivals broke out a Kermit puppet this week at training camp that features the quarterback’s curly hair and Chiefs jersey and got big laughs out of (unsuccessfully) making it sound like Mahomes.

Rookie Raiders safety Trey Taylor is the one in the video hoisting the Kermit Mahomes puppet as his teammates all laugh in the background.

The Raiders have topped Mahomes in the regular season, but y’know, he’s the greatest quarterback of his generation and has won three Super Bowls and has won the division six-straight times since his first full season in 2018.

The Kermit Mahomes puppet is admittedly hilarious, but we’re not sure if the Raiders should be the team to pass it around for kicks and giggles.

It ain’t easy being silver and black when Mahomes and the Chiefs come to town, after all.

Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes credits his ‘unique voice’ for drawing opponents offside

Mahomes’ frog-like cadence has been an underrated weapon for the Kansas City Chiefs.

The Houston Texans and Los Angeles Chargers were both drawn offside by Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes in the first two weeks of the 2020 NFL season. In total, the Chiefs have drawn five defensive offside flags against their opponents this year. So what exactly is causing teams to jump offsides so often for Kansas City?

It’s a two-fold process according to Mahomes.

“Yeah, we work on changing up the snap count all throughout training camp and there are some rough days where you get a lot of false starts and stuff like that,” Mahomes said. “But it always makes you better whenever the season comes along. So I have the unique advantage of having a kind of unique voice that’s able to get those guys to jump offside. So I try to utilize that as much as possible.”

Not only did the Chiefs and Mahomes practice using cadence and the snap count to draw teams offside this summer, but he has an innate advantage. Mahomes believes that his unique voice can help him get defenders to jump offside. If you can’t recall what Mahomes sounds like, both Andy Reid and Tyreek Hill have likened Mahomes’ voice to Kermit the Frog. I’d say Mahomes has got a little more southern twang to his voice, but there’s definitely something froggish about it.

Mahomes thinks this advantage in drawing offside penalties, could even carry over into the dust-up between the Chiefs and Ravens in Week 3.

“Obviously, you get to use verbal snap count on the road and especially when we’re playing places like Baltimore you’re not going to be able to use that because of the crowd, especially Monday night so that definitely is an advantage,” Mahomes explained. “The only thing that’s kind of a disadvantage, you have to change a lot of your code words on a lot of your audibles because everybody can kind of hear you on the TV copy and everything like that.”

Playing in a fanless stadium will only help Mahomes and the Chiefs continue to take advantage of the snap count and cadence. Baltimore’s defensive front has drawn two defensive offside penalties so far this season. They’ll have to be mighty disciplined as to not fall victim to the unique voice of Mahomes on Monday.

Watch Jamie Foxx flawlessly impersonate a bunch of celebrities

This is incredible.

Jamie Foxx is so ridiculously talented, but that goes without saying. He’s a singer who has had chart topping hits and an actor who has actually won an Oscar.

He’s also extremely funny, to go along with all that. This dude has done it all.

All of these talents were on display when he was on Instagram Live doing a Q&A with Candace Parker. Foxx is known for his spot on impressions of people — specifically when it comes to celebrities.

Parker asked him about those impressions and how he does them so well. He proceeded to explain by impersonating Kermit the Frog, Jay Z, Sammy Davis Jr., Dave Chappelle and Mike Tyson all in one fell swoop.

Check this out.

You learn the tone first. So if its…and then certain people have certain things. Like, Jay-Z, this is weird. Jay-Z and my Sammy Davis, Jr. and my Kermit the Frog are the same thing.”

How do you transition from Kermit the Frog to Jay-Z to Sammy Davis Jr. to Dave Chappelle from two different time periods to Mike Tyson without skipping a beat? Foxx is incredible.
