Kentucky at Louisville odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Saturday’s Kentucky at Louisville odds and lines, with college football expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The No. 25 Kentucky Wildcats (8-3, 5-3 SEC) take on the Louisville Cardinals (6-5, 4-4 ACC) at Cardinal Stadium Saturday at 7:30 p.m. ET. Below, we look at the Kentucky at Louisville odds and lines, and make our expert college football picks, predictions and bets.

Kentucky’s successful SEC season has been a combination of its offense averaging 31.6 points per game with a stout defense that’s giving up just 335.8 yards per game (27th nationally). The Wildcats have stumbled a bit of late, however, as they failed to cover their last three conference games before blowing out New Mexico State 56-16 last week.

Rankings according to the AFCA Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports.

Louisville is coming off a 62-22 thrashing of Duke in a game that QB Malik Cunningham tallied 500-plus yards of offense with 7 touchdowns (5 passing, 2 rushing). Cunningham has been the engine behind a Louisville offense ranked 19th in yards per game (459.6) this season. The Cardinals have covered their last two games against Duke and Syracuse.

Kentucky at Louisville odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

Louisville 35, Kentucky 28

Money line

Despite its 6-5 record, Louisville comes in as the hotter team, and we expect them to handle the Wildcats Saturday. Given the small spread, PASS on the money line and get better odds by taking Louisville to win by at least a field goal.

Against the spread

Louisville and Cunningham seem to be hitting their stride at the right time with a pair of blowout ACC wins, while Kentucky somewhat stumbled down the stretch in SEC play. While the Wildcats have a slight edge on defense compared to Louisville (392.6 yards allowed per game; 78th nationally), the edge isn’t wide enough to make up for what the Cardinals should do on offense.

Look for LOUISVILLE -2.5 (-125) to win a tightly played battle for the Governor’s Cup.

Over/Under

The Over has hit in two of Louisville’s last three games and in three of Kentucky’s last four. The line here is certainly attainable given Louisville’s success on offense with a suspect defense, so we’re leaning toward the OVER 57.5 (-115) here.

Kentucky at Louisville: Three things to know

  1. Kentucky hasn’t played since last Saturday, and perhaps the timing for a layoff was good. The Wildcats have lost five in a row and appear to be in disarray on and off the court. Freshman F Cam’Ron Fletcher was asked to “step away” from the team after UK’s last loss (Dec. 19 at North Carolina). HC John Calipari‘s top-8 rotation includes five freshmen, and thus far the mix has been more combustible than commendable. Kentucky’s 1-5 start is the program’s worst through six games since the 1926-27 season.
  2. Louisville returns home after back-to-back road games, the first of which was an 85-48 loss to the Wisconsin Badgers which essentially knocked the Cardinals out of the top-25. UL’s leading scorer – G Carlik Jones – did not play in the game against UW. Jones did play Tuesday (at Pittsburgh). The 6-foot-1 Cincinnati native is a transfer from Radford; he averaged 20.0 points and 5.5 assists per game in 2019-20.
  3. UK’s losing streak has been a disaster in some stretches but not all. The five teams the ‘Cats have lost to have a combined record of 26-13 (.667). Four of the losses included lengthy runs with a Kentucky lead. Three-point shooting has been a major culprit in the losses: UK has shot just 21.8% from beyond the arc since its season-opening win against Morehead State.

Kentucky at Louisville: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Louisville 68, Kentucky 64

Money line (ML)

STAND PAT. Not enough of a lean either way.

Against the spread (ATS)

PASS. This is a popular game with a well-made line. Only the slightest of leans – on Kentucky, especially if you could get +5 – can be teased out of this one.

Over/Under (O/U)

Kentucky’s games this season have delivered six Unders in as many tries. The Wildcats have scored 64 points or less in each game of their losing skid. For the season, UK ranks 279th in NCAA-I scoring (65.8 PPG).

Both these teams trend toward fewer possessions. Both can defend inside and midrange looks; both are adept at preventing transition and second-chance points.

The total here is a low one, but there is value in pegging a result even lower. Consider splitting your wager and holding a partial unit until tip time nears; you may benefit from an extra half-point. TAKE THE UNDER 133.5 (-110).
