Jets sign CB Rachad Wildgoose, make 7 other roster moves

The Jets signed CB Rachad Wildgoose and TE Kenny Yeboah on Tuesday, in addition to a handful of other moves.

The Jets made a bevy of roster moves before their Week 11 matchup with the Dolphins.

New York signed TE Kenny Yeboah and CB Rachad Wildgoose to the active roster to bolster the depth at two key positions. The team also signed LB Corey Thompson and WR Keelan Doss to the practice squad. CB Lamar Jackson and DE Jabari Zuniga were protected on the practice squad.

CB Brandin Echols was placed on injured reserve with a quad injury, while LB Noah Dawkins landed on practice squad injured reserve with an undisclosed injury.

Here’s a little bit on the newcomers and New York’s other roster moves.

Jets TE Kenny Yeboah to make NFL debut vs. Falcons in London

UDFA TE Kenny Yeboah will make his NFL and Jets debut vs. the Falcons in London.

Undrafted free agent tight end Kenny Yeboah will get his first taste of regular-season action against the Falcons after the Jets promoted him from the practice squad, Robert Saleh confirmed Friday.

Fellow tight end Tyler Kroft was ruled out for Week 5 with a back injury.

Yeboah played well in the Jets’ final preseason game, catching four passes for 100 yards and two touchdowns against the Eagles — including a tie-clinching Hail Mary grab — but he failed to make the initial 53-man roster. He’s spent the past four weeks on the practice squad with Kroft, Ryan Griffin and Daniel Brown as the Jets’ top three tight ends.

The Jets had a fourth-round grade on Yeboah entering the draft but waited until after the draft to sign him to a fully guaranteed $180,000 base salary with a $20,000 signing bonus – a relatively large contract for an undrafted player. Yeboah enjoyed a solid collegiate career at Ole Miss and Temple, finishing with 74 receptions for 1,062 yards and 12 touchdowns.

WR Elijah Moore and CB Brandin Echols are also expected to play.

2021 New York Jets 16-man practice squad tracker

The Jets have begun to build their 16-man practice squad. Keep up with the moves here:

The Jets have begun to build their 16-man practice squad.

The NFL is keeping some practice squad rules from 2020, including…

  1. Up to six practice squad players can have more than two accrued seasons.
  2. Teams can protect up to four practice squad players per week.
  3. Two practice squad players can be elevated to the active roster on game days.

You can keep track of the Jets’ practice squad additions below. We’ll be updating this list as such moves are reported and announced.

Predicting the Jets’ 16-man practice squad

The Jets will have a 16-man practice squad filled out soon. Here is our crack at predicting the group.

The Jets began their roster purge on Monday afternoon, making multiple cuts to begin the process of trimming down from 80 to 53 players by Tuesday at 4 p.m.

Joe Douglas and Robert Saleh are going to have to make some excruciatingly tough decisions on Tuesday, but not all of the players they cut are necessarily done with the Jets. New York still has a 16-man practice squad to fill out and while some of its young talent isn’t ready to be part of the active roster, there is still a place for players to develop and potentially contribute down the road.

Here is Jets Wire’s crack at predicting which 16 players will land on the Jets’ practice squad, which will start to take shape Wednesday afternoon.

What are Kenny Yeboah’s chances of making Jets’ 53-man roster?

Kenny Yeboah bettered his chances of making the Jets’ 53-man roster with his play against the Eagles, but his future is still up in the air.

Kenny Yeboah entered the Jets’ preseason finale against the Eagles in desperate need of a big-time performance to garner any sort of consideration for a spot on the 53-man roster.

The undrafted free agent out of Ole Miss delivered just that on Friday night, catching four passes for 100 yards and two touchdowns — including a heave from James Morgan as time expired to set up Josh Adams’ game-tying two-point conversion. Yeboah flashed the potential that intrigued Joe Douglas enough to give him $200,000 just after the draft ended against Philadelphia, providing the Jets with the receiving threat at tight end they have been lacking all offseason.

Tyler Kroft caught two touchdown passes from Zach Wilson against the Packers, but he is not a prolific pass-catching tight end. Chris Herndon and Ryan Griffin were non-factors throughout the spring and summer. Trevon Wesco is going to operate as a full back in Matt LaFleur’s offense more than anything else.

Yeboah should be on his way to making New York’s 53-man with all of that taken into account, but one big preseason performance does not wipe out all of the struggles he has endured since joining the Jets.

Yeboah struggled mightily with his hands during the spring, frequently dropping passes he made a living catching during his college career. Rookie wide receivers and tight ends often take a while to catch up to the speed of the professional game during their first round of OTAs and minicamps, but their hands seldom fail them in the extreme fashion Yeboah’s did.

Training camp represented a clean slate for Yeboah. He could have arrived at One Jets Drive in July and made everyone forget about his case of the dropsies with statement performances on the practice field. Instead, he remained quiet among the underwhelming competition at his position. The beginning of the preseason did not flip the switch for Yeboah, either, as he fumbled in the fourth quarter of New York’s preseason opener, setting up a Giants touchdown to make it a one-possession game.

There is no denying Yeboah has talent. He flashed plenty of it against the Eagles. The 22-year-old is just not ready to take on the challenge of playing meaningful regular season reps right now. That might not be the case after a couple more weeks of refinement on the practice squad, but the Jets cannot afford to roll the dice on Yeboah putting the pieces together as a member of their active roster.

Tight end is a key position in LaFleur’s offense given its reliance on play action. Blocking tight ends like Kroft are important to the scheme’s success. So are tight ends who can get open and catch the ball. Until Yeboah shows LaFleur and the rest of the Jets’ coaching staff he can do that on a consistent basis, he is best served working in the shadows as a member of the practice squad.

Even after providing a glimpse of his untapped potential to cap the preseason.

The Eagles-Jets game improbably and hilariously ended in a tie after this completely ridiculous Hail Mary

Tie, Eagles, tie.

If there’s one thing the Philadelphia Eagles are going to do, it’s give you a tie game when you least expect it.

Why? Because that’s just what they do. They tied a game last season with the Bengals. They also tied a game in 2008 with the Bengals. And here they are tying a game in the preseason with the Jets.

And they did it in absolutely spectacular fashion against the Jets in the final game of their preseason schedule to finish 0-2-1. It was absolutely incredible. This could only happen to the Eagles.

Here’s how it all went down. The Eagles are up 31-23 heading into the absolute final play of the game. Jets QB James Morgan threw a Hail Mary into the endzone.

Of course, it’s not going to work, right? Right?…right?

Wrong. It’s Eagles. Touchdown, Kenny Yeboah.

But look! It’s OK! They still needed a 2-point conversion to tie the game. There was no time left in the game. Too many things would have to go right for this to happen. There’s no way…

Wrong. Wrong again.

This was really the only way things could’ve possibly ended. It’s the Eagles. It’s only right.

Jets position battles: Who has the edge after New York’s preseason finale?

The final week of the preseason provided a closer look at some of the Jets’ key position battles.

The Jets survived their preseason finale against the Eagles without a loss, but the long-lasting impact of New York’s tie against Philadelphia will go far beyond the final score.

Gang Green’s third preseason clash provided one last look at the many ongoing position battles at One Jets Drive. With numerous spots up for grabs on both sides of the ball, New York’s annual preseason matchup with the Eagles told the story of which players are currently winning those fights and which players have some ground to make up if they want to secure a place on the 53-man roster or a higher spot on the depth chart.

Here is the latest on the Jets’ position battles with roster cuts quickly approaching.

Studs and Duds from Jets’ preseason Week 3 tie vs. Eagles

Which Jets shined in New York’s tie to the Eagles? Who put up poor performances in the preseason finale?

The Jets pulled off a dramatic tie against the Eagles on Friday with a last-second touchdown and two-point conversion, finishing the preseason (technically) undefeated.

The Jets offense performed admirably throughout the contest, including that second-half comeback, but the defense left a lot to be desired. A lot of missed tackles and poor coverage left gaps throughout the defense that allowed the Eagles to put up points in bunches.

Robert Saleh and the rest of the coaching staff will use this game to evaluate New York’s players one last time ahead of final cuts. A few players stood out, though not necessarily for positive reasons.

Let’s look at New York’s Studs and Duds from the preseason finale.

Eagles vs. Jets Preseason Week 3 recap: Everything we know

What a way to end the preseason… Here’s our recap of the Jets’ tie with the Eagles:

Inclement weather delayed the Jets’ preseason finale, but exhibition play has finally come to an end.

New York tied with the Eagles, 31-31, at a soggy MetLife Stadium on Friday night. A late fumble from Jets TE Daniel Brown, that turned into a touchdown, looked like a game-sealer for Philadelphia, but James Morgan found Kenny Yeboah for a Hail Mary touchdown that led to the draw.

Both teams sat the majority of their starters. With the tie,  New York ended its preseason 2-0-1.

The Jets and the rest of the NFL will soon turn their attention to final cuts and Week 1 matchups. Before that happens, however, let’s take a quick look at what else went down in Gang Green’s game against the Eagles.

7 Jets in need of a big game against the Eagles

Position battles will rage on in the Jets’ preseason finale against the Eagles.

Preseason play is deemed mostly insignificant for players locked into roster spots. Other than taking some repetitions against competition as a tune-up, preseason games are no more than a formality before the beginning of the regular season for starters and key reserves.

The same cannot be said for players squarely on the roster bubble. In fact, the preseason is the most important time of the year for any player fighting to make a team. The Jets’ starters will play a half at the most and go through the motions in their preseason finale against the Eagles, but it becomes survival of the fittest once the reserves enter.

Here are seven Jets who are looking to make the most of their playing time against the Eagles to either get back to top form, help their standing on the depth chart, or do enough to improve their chances of avoiding the ax before cutdown day, which is just around the corner.
