Dolphins OT Kendall Lamm unlikely to play in regular-season finale

Miami’s depth is being tested.

The 2022 campaign has proven to be a trying one for the Miami Dolphins’ offensive line.

After placing Austin Jackson on injured reserve for the second time this year, Miami also entered this past Sunday without Terron Armstead or Eric Fisher due to injuries.

The Dolphins opted to start Kendall Lamm, who they just signed to the active roster on Saturday, at left tackle against the New England Patriots. However, in the second quarter, Lamm left the contest and was carted to the locker room. He never returned to action.

On Monday, head coach Mike McDaniel was asked about the outlook for the tackle to go on Sunday, and his tone wasn’t very positive.

“With Kendall Lamm, it’s going to be tough for him to come and play this week,” McDaniel said. “I don’t see that happening. That ankle (injury) was – he’s a warrior that we’ve learned in a short period of time that we can count on, but I think this would be too aggressive for this week.”

After Lamm departed, Miami turned to Greg Little for the remainder of the game. Little is also dealing with a foot injury, so it’s not totally clear who’s going to take the field on Sunday against the New York Jets.

The Miami Dolphins entered their Week 17 matchup against the New England Patriots without starting left tackle Terron Armstead, who’s been dealing with a number of injuries.

Instead, veteran Kendall Lamm got the start at Gillette Stadium, but before the end of the first half, he limped off of the field and was carted to the locker room. The team announced that Lamm is questionable to return with an ankle injury.

With Lamm, Armstead and Eric Fisher out, Miami turned to Greg Little to protect Teddy Bridgewater’s blind side. This season, Little has gotten reps at the spot, and he hasn’t been great.

The Miami Dolphins have called up a few reinforcements for their Week 16 battle with the Green Bay Packers, as they’ve elevated offensive tackle Kendall Lamm and wide receiver Braylon Sanders.

This is Sanders’ third and final elevation of the season and the first for Lamm. If the Dolphins want the undrafted rookie wideout to appear in another game this year, they’ll have to sign him to the active roster.

Lamm’s elevation may spell bad news for veteran tackle Eric Fisher, who has been on the injury report with a calf injury and was listed as doubtful for action this weekend.

Sanders’ appearance is likely for River Cracraft, who’s been dealing with the same injury and missed last week’s contest as well.

Dolphins elevate two offensive lineman vs. 49ers

Miami could use the depth.

Ahead of their Week 13 matchup on Sunday afternoon with the San Francisco 49ers, the Miami Dolphins have elevated two players from the practice squad to their active roster.

Veteran offensive tackle Kendall Lamm, who was just signed this past week, was the first lineman elevated.

The former Appalachian State tackle has played 86 NFL games and has started in 28 contests.

Lamm has also played some at both right and left tackle in his career which will be helpful with Austin Jackson and Terron Armstead injured.

Undrafted rookie center James Empey, who spent his collegiate career at BYU was the other player elevated. He can provide depth and may also be used as an extra blocker at times.

Dolphins make slew of practice squad moves on Monday

An offensive tackle is among the new additions.

On Monday, just a day after defeating the Houston Texans to improve to 8-3 on the season, the Miami Dolphins announced four transactions involving practice squad players.

Wide receiver Freddie Swain was restored to the practice squad after previously dealing with an injury. Miami also released offensive lineman Grant Hermanns and wide receiver Calvin Jackson Jr. from the unit.

The Dolphins did make one addition to the practice squad, signing veteran offensive tackle Kendall Lamm.

Lamm, 30, signed with the Texans as an undrafted free agent back in 2015. He spent four seasons with the Houston, two with the Cleveland Browns, one with the Tennessee Titans and part of this season with the Detroit Lions’ practice squad.

The former Appalachian State offensive lineman has played 86 NFL games and has started in 28 contests.

Primarily a right tackle in his career, Lamm has also played some left tackle, and with Austin Jackson also dealing with an injury, there’s a chance he could be helpful at either spot.

Quick takeaways from the Lions vs. Colts preseason game

Some quick takeaways from the Detroit Lions preseason victory over the Indianapolis Colts

The Detroit Lions captured their first preseason win in Indianapolis with a competitive 27-26 victory over the Colts in the second week of preseason.

Detroit largely dominated both lines of scrimmage throughout the game, a matchup where most starters on both teams did not play. The Lions ran for 175 yards and held the Colts to just 30 yards on the ground in an emphatic display of trench domination.

This game put the spotlight on the backups, and in general it showed the overall increase in talent and depth of the Lions from this same point a year ago.

Kendall Lamm: What the Lions are getting in their new OT

Scouting report on new Lions OT Kendall Lamm from our Jeff Risdon, who covered Lamm in both Houston and Cleveland

The Detroit Lions signed veteran offensive tackle Kendall Lamm on Monday. Lamm joins the Lions after undrafted rookie Zein Obeid retired and left a hole on the offensive line depth chart.

It’s a smart signing by GM Brad Holmes. Lamm, 30, has been around several NFL teams and has starting experience. I covered Lamm for two of his former teams, the Houston Texans (2016-2018 seasons) and Cleveland Browns (2019-2020). Here’s my take on the follically gifted Appalachian State product.

Lamm has 28 career starts in his seven-year career. Almost half (13) came in the 2018 season for the Texans, where he was the primary starting right tackle from Week 4 onward, including a wild card playoff loss to the Colts.

Most right tackles tend to be more power-oriented players (think Penei Sewell) but Lamm has proven to be something of a pass-blocking specialist. That was especially true in his season as a starter in Houston. He’s just not a player who generates much movement in the run game and isn’t an aggressive slobber-knocker type of tackle. He was a poor schematic fit in Tennessee in 2021 for the style of run game the Titans like to roll with Derrick Henry.

Lamm is at his best in pass protection with the pass rusher aligned off the line (3-4 OLB). He’s got a decent first step and quick enough feet to slide and reset well against wide speed. Lamm can jab quickly with his punch and does a good job riding outside rushes around the top of the pocket, a trait that worked well with mobile Deshaun Watson at QB in Houston and also with Baker Mayfield in Cleveland.

Power rushers who can quickly get into his chest are a problem for Lamm, and that’s something unlikely to change now that he’s 30 and bounced around three teams. He does have some athleticism, something he showed in catching a touchdown pass in Cleveland in 2020:

The Lions have some depth issues behind Sewell and left tackle Taylor Decker. Matt Nelson is still a work in progress as the swing tackle, and none of the crew of Dan Skipper, Darrin Paulo or Obinna Eze has stepped up enough this offseason to assuage any concerns. Lamm can absolutely win the No. 4 OT job and could push Nelson for the swing OT position, especially if he can handle the range in the run game.

Lions training camp notebook: The heat is on for Day 11

News and notes from Day 11 of Detroit Lions training camp on Jeff Okudah, Tracy Walker, Jamaal Williams and more

Monday marked the 11th session of Detroit Lions training camp. It was a sweaty day in Allen Park for the unusual afternoon practice, with a 90-degree day with high humidity following a heavy morning rain.

We didn’t get a lot of offense vs. defense in practice, with the players not in full pads. The practice emphasis was on special teams drills, and that dominated the action until a brief downpour ended the practice early out of precautionary measures.

Here’s what I saw, heard and observed in Allen Park on Monday:

Lions sign veteran OT Kendall Lamm

Lamm is a 7-year vet who spent 2021 with the Titans

The Detroit Lions have added more competition to the backup offensive tackle battle. The team has signed veteran Kendall Lamm after a workout on Monday.

Lamm, 30, played the 2021 season with the Tennessee Titans. He has 86 games of experience across three teams in seven NFL seasons, including one season (2018) as the primary starting right tackle for the Houston Texans.

Lamm joins Matt Nelson, Dan Skipper, Darrin Paulo and UDFA rookie Obinna Eze in the battle for the swing tackle spot behind starters Taylor Decker and Penei Sewell. The offensive line depth at tackle has been an ongoing issue, as noted recently in the recap of the first 10 days of camp.

The Lions had room for Lamm on the 90-man roster after undrafted rookie offensive lineman Zein Obeid retired.

Report: Jets working out former Titans OT Kendall Lamm

Former Titans OT Kendall Lamm is reportedly getting a look from the Jets.

Former Tennessee Titans offensive tackle Kendall Lamm is reportedly set to visit the New York Jets for a workout.

According to Aaron Wilson of Pro Football Network, the Jets are taking a closer look at the free-agent swing tackle after both Mekhi Becton and George Fant began training camp on the PUP list.

Lamm spent the 2021 campaign with Tennessee as a backup after signing a two-year, $6.8 million contract during the offseason but didn’t play well when called upon. In 87 snaps, Lamm allowed two sacks and posted an overall Pro Football Focus grade of 46.9.

Tennessee released Lamm earlier this offseason, saving the team a little over three million in cap space. This is the first we’ve heard of anything involving Lamm since then.

Prior to his stint with the Titans, Lamm spent the first four seasons of his career with the Houston Texans, and then signed on with the Cleveland Browns for another two.
