The Denver Broncos have announced their list of inactive players for Sunday’s game against the Arizona Cardinals.

Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson (concussion), wide receiver Courtland Sutton (hamstring), wide receiver Kendall Hinton (hamstring), offensive lineman Quinn Bailey, defensive lineman Elijah Garcia, cornerback Michael Ojemudia and tight end Albert Okwuegbunam will not play against the Cardinals in Week 15.

With Wilson sidelined, the Broncos are set to start Brett Rypien for the second time this season. Rypien previously started in a 16-9 loss to the New York Jets in Week 7 when Wilson was out with a hamstring injury. Jarrett Guarantano, who just joined the practice squad last week, will serve as Rypien’s backup against Arizona.

At wide receiver, Denver’s top options this week are Jerry Jeudy, Jalen Virgil, Montrell Washington, Brandon Johnson and Freddie Swain. In addition to being without Sutton and Hinton, the Broncos are also missing Tim Patrick and KJ Hamler, who are both on injured reserve.

Denver leads the all-time series against the Cardinals 9-1-1, and the Broncos are considered a 2.5-point favorite at home this week.

Broncos QB Russell Wilson in concussion protocol; RB Mike Boone likely done for season

Broncos QB Russell Wilson has entered the NFL’s concussion protocol and RB Mike Boone’s season is likely over.

Denver Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson has entered the NFL’s concussion protocol after being knocked out of the game in the fourth quarter of Sunday’s showdown with the Kansas City Chiefs.

There are five phases in the protocol that Wilson would need to pass through in order to be cleared for this week’s game against the Arizona Cardinals. If Wilson is not cleared before Sunday, Brett Rypien will start in his place.

Elsewhere on the injury front, running back Mike Boone suffered a high-ankle sprain on Sunday, and coach Nathaniel Hackett said Monday “it doesn’t look good” for Boone to be able to play again this season.

Boone totaled 198 yards from scrimmage in nine games this year. He is scheduled to become a free agent in 2023.

Broncos wide receiver Kendall Hinton (hamstring) and outside linebacker Jacob Martin (knee) also left Sunday’s game with injuries. Hackett said those injuries are still being evaluated.

We’ll know more on the injury front when Denver returns to the practice field and releases an updated injury report on Wednesday.

Studs and duds from Broncos’ 23-10 loss to Panthers

Hardly any bright spots existed for the Broncos on Sunday, who lost their third game in a row.

In Week 12, the Denver Broncos finally put together a complete game, but in the worst possible way. The Broncos lost their third straight game, a 23-10 loss to the Carolina Panthers. We take a look at the studs and duds of yet another less-than-stellar performance.

Kendall Hinton praised by Broncos coach Nathaniel Hackett

“We’re so happy to have him,” Broncos coach Nathaniel Hackett said of Kendall Hinton.

Denver Broncos fans don’t need to be reminded that Kendall Hinton is the ultimate team player — he proved that in 2020 when he stepped into a game at quarterback, an impossible situation that he was willing to take on.

Hinton is back playing wide receiver now and he’s not just a feel-good story. The receiver has been a valuable player for Denver this year and he’s demonstrated his versatility by filling in for injured starters at multiple positions.

“I don’t think anybody could understand what he did in that Tennessee game and starting there,” coach Nathaniel Hackett said Tuesday. “To go as long as he had just working [at] one position and then on very first play the game, he’s got to jump to a completely different position. I think that’s just a testament to his intelligence, how he understands the system, knows where to line up and all the different spots we can put him.

“He has been dynamic out there. He’s been able to win on one-on-one routes, he’s got a lot of shiftiness to him, and when you throw that intelligence in there — obviously, because of his experience as a quarterback — he’s been really good for us. We’re so happy to have him and have to keep him going.”

Hinton has hauled in 13 receptions for 227 yards through eight games this season (two starts). Those aren’t flashy totals, but the coaches see beyond the box score, and Hinton has left a good impression.

Commanders Taylor Heinicke went from quarantine QB to starter

Taylor Heinicke’s journey in less than two years is a heckuva story. And it ties back to an undrafted wide receiver for the Denver Broncos.

Commanders fans, do you recall Kendall Hinton?

Hinton is a good percentage of the reason why you have Taylor Heinicke today in 2022.

On Nov. 22, 2020, the Broncos defeated the Miami Dolphins 20-13, raising their record to 4-6. But that was the last good news for the Broncos that week.

Suddenly, Jeff Driskel tested positive for COVID-19, and Drew Lock and Brett Rypien were also declared ineligible, having been with Driskel without wearing masks.

The Broncos were unprepared for such a disaster of suddenly losing, not one but all three of their quarterbacks on the roster. But the (NFL) show must go on. So taking snaps that day was Kendall Hinton.

Hinton was not an NFL quarterback, and he certainly didn’t have enough time to prep, to make much of a difference in his performance. He was only age 23 at the time and was an undrafted wide receiver from Wake Forest.

Yet there he was being forced to play quarterback in an NFL regular season game having no previous NFL experience at quarterback. The Broncos attempted to run the ball as much as they could gaining 100 yards on their 33 rushes.

Hinton attempted nine passes, completing one for 13 yards. He was sacked once and intercepted twice for an NFL passer rating of 0.0. It was a disaster; the Broncos of course lost badly to the Saints 31-3.

With the Minnesota Vikings staff, Scott Turner got to work some with Taylor Heinicke an undrafted quarterback out of Old Dominion. Heinicke had seen some action in the preseason, never appearing in a regular season game over two seasons (2015-16).

The Patriots signed and released Heinicke in 2017, as did the Texans, although he did attempt one pass for the Texans in 2017.

Turner and Ron Rivera signed Heinicke for the Carolina Panthers, and he started one game in 2018.

In December 2020, Turner called Heinicke, and Washington signed Heinicke to be its quarantine quarterback. He would study the offense, work out and pretty much be isolated initially.

Suddenly, Alex Smith’s leg was injured again, and Dwayne Haskins was not taking responsibility. Heinicke was brought up to the practice squad, then the roster appeared against the Panthers on Dec. 27, and got the start against the Bucs in the playoff game.

In 2022, Washington has won four of five games Heinicke has started, and he was named the team’s starter (not Carson Wentz) moving forward.

As Rivera said Monday, “It’s a heck of a story.”

Studs and duds from Broncos’ 22-16 overtime loss to Raiders

A few standouts, but a mostly underwhelming performance for the Broncos in Week 11.

The Denver Broncos found yet another way to lose a game this season, this time dropping their second straight against the Las Vegas Raiders. We examine five studs and duds from the loss.

Raiders, Broncos Thursday Week 11 injury report: Broncos without 3 of top 4 WR’s

Broncos were without 3 of top 4 WR’s in practice today.

Receivers are dropping like flies in Denver all of a sudden. The Broncos were already without Jerry Jeudy (ankle) and KJ Hamler (hamstring) in practice, and today they were also without Kendall Hinton with a shoulder injury.

That makes three of the team’s top four receivers sidelined. Just Courtland Sutton practiced. The next receiver on the roster in terms of receiving yards is Jalen Virgil who had his first and only NFL catch last week.

You know, in case you were thinking the Raiders wide receiver corps was banged up or anything. They’re only missing Hunter Renfrow and TE Darren Waller who are both on injured reserve.

One of these guys the Broncos are missing will have to return to the lineup by Friday if they are to have a shot at playing.

Others missing practice for the Broncos include FB/TE Andrew Beck (hamstring) and CB K’Waun Williams (wrist/elbow/knee).

The Raiders have a few players who were limited including LB Luke Masterson (ribs), T Kolton Miller (shoulder/abdomen), LB Denzel Perryman (hip/ribs), and CB Sam Webb (knee).
