10 most athletic Patriots’ draft picks of the Bill Belichick era

Who cracked the top-10 most athletic Patriots draft picks? Some names on the list might surprise you.

Whether true or not, New England Patriots fans believe the team typically drafts for old school style players that fit football schemes, while opting to pass on explosive playmaking athletes.

That might have been true when having the greatest quarterback of all time, Tom Brady, leading the offense. The team opted to select more intelligent, passionate players than flashy athletes they needed to develop.

But the truth is the Patriots did in fact draft high-end athletes. Let’s face it, they’re all elite athletes if they’re in the NFL, but in terms of comparing apples to apples (or NFL Players to NFL Players), they did so at a lower clip than most.

RAS, or relative athletic score, has been widely used to quantify just how athletic a player is based on their official combine performances for their position and size. Players are given a 0-10 score, which is derived from other players at the same position throughout history.

The closer a player is to 10.00—and there have been a few—the more “freakish” the athlete. Players like Calvin Johnson, Jordan Davis, and Anthony Richardson are examples of the short list of players since 1987 to score a 10.00 on the RAS scale.

Let’s take a look at the Patriots’ 10 most athletic draft selections in the Bill Belichick era.

Jets make 2 more practice squad additions

The Jets signed WR Isaiah Zuber and CB Ken Webster to their practice squad.

With their roster ravaged by COVID-19 and injuries, the Jets continued to add reinforcements on Wednesday.

New York made two practice squad additions, signing WR Isaiah Zuber and CB Ken Webster.

Zuber entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the Patriots in 2020. The Mississippi State product played in four games for New England as a rookie, catching two passes for 29 yards. He also ran twice for 21 yards. Zuber has since spent time with the 49ers and Browns practice squads.

Webster also spent time with the Niners and Patriots. He spent the 2020 season and this past summer with San Francisco. Webster was picked by the Patriots in the seventh round of the 2019 draft. The Ole Miss talent was cut as a rookie and claimed by the Dolphins. He’s made five NFL starts and picked up 25 tackles, one defended pass and one forced fumble in 17 career games.

Seahawks tryout 2 free agent DBs, use one practice squad protection

Yesterday, the team worked out a pair of free agent defensive backs and used one of their four practice squad protections.

The Seattle Seahawks were relatively quiet to begin Week 12. Yesterday, the team worked out a pair of free agent defensive backs and used one of their four practice squad protections.

Here is a quick review of what Seattle got up to on Tuesday.

49ers release CB Ken Webster

#49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed cornerback Ken Webster was released as roster cuts continue.

The 49ers on Monday released cornerback Ken Webster as they trim their roster to the 85-player threshold required by the NFL. The deadline for the first wave of cuts is 1:00 pm Tuesday.

Webster joined the 49ers last season when injuries depleted their secondary. He played in nine games almost exclusively on special teams, but suffered a hamstring injury in Week 12 that sidelined him for the rest of the year.

He rejoined San Francisco in the offseason and had a real shot to battle for a roster spot thanks to his special teams contributions. The team used two draft picks on cornerbacks though and re-signed K’Waun Williams, Emmanuel Moseley and Jason Verrett which dramatically limited the number of available roster spots.

Webster wasn’t officially released Monday, but head coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed a report from NBC Sports Bay Area’s Matt Maiocco that Webster was let go. Defensive lineman Eddie Vanderdoes, and linebackers Donald Payne and James Burgess were also let go Monday.

Dolphins CB Ken Webster doesn’t travel with team for Week 12

Injured Dolphins CB Ken Webster will not play today, as he did not travel with the team to Cleveland.

The Miami Dolphins are just hours away from taking the field and doing battle with the Cleveland Browns in Week 12. When the Dolphins’ defense takes the field this week, the team will be severely undermanned in the secondary. Miami lost safeties Bobby McCain and Reshad Jones this past week to injured reserve, where they join Xavien Howard in waiting for the end of the season before looking to rehab.

At least one more Dolphin will be missing from the secondary as well — cornerback Ken Webster did not travel with the team to Cleveland due to an ankle injury.

With the Dolphins having to worry about wide receivers Jarvis Landry and Odell Beckham Jr. today, all hands on deck certainly would have been helpful to stave off the Browns’ air attack, led by second-year quarterback Baker Mayfield. Now, Mayfield and company should be quite aggressive through the air and it will come onto Miami’s pass rush to mask the lingering issues in the secondary for the Dolphins.

Webster isn’t the caliber of player who would have been able to put either Landry or Beckham on lockdown, but he’s a promising youngster who certainly could’ve used the reps against some of the best receivers the NFL has to offer.

Miami kicks off Week 12 against the Browns at 1PM EST today at FirstEnergy Stadium in Cleveland.
