San Antonio Spurs Keldon Johnson, special guests give away school supplies and free haircuts

There, kids could get themselves free haircuts and school supplies to help them get ready for the coming 2024-25 school year.

San Antonio Spurs small forward Keldon Johnson has been a part of the local community he plays ball professionally in for some time now. And he has never been one to be slow to give back to that community when need is evident. He was at it again recently, along with former NFL cornerback Ramon Richards, as the pair joined others to put together the third annual Back to School Backpack Drive at Countdown City Cuts this week.

There, kids could get themselves free haircuts and school supplies to help them get ready for the coming 2024-25 school year, looking sharp and ready. The folks behind the official YouTube channel for local TV station KSAT 12 put together a clip to document it all for your own viewing pleasure.

Take a look at the clip embedded below to hear what they had to say about the event while we all await the start of the Spurs’ own 2024-25 campaign.

Spurs reportedly ‘willing’ to trade Keldon Johnson this offseason

The San Antonio Spurs are reportedly “willing” to listen to Keldon Johnson trade offers this summer.

The San Antonio Spurs have a bunch of decisions to make this summer. As they look to potentially hit the trade market, a few different players could be made available. And according to Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints, the Spurs have been willing to listen to offers for Keldon Johnson. (H/t Jonah Kubicek of Inside the Spurs)

“In addition to the team being open to discussing trade ideas with both the fourth and eighth overall picks, the Spurs will be willing to hear offers involving Keldon Johnson, league sources told ClutchPoints,” Siegel wrote. “However, the Spurs still view Johnson as a key building block next to Wembanyama, and have given teams no indication that he is currently on the trade block.”

Johnson is set to make $19 million next season, making him a solid trade piece based on his salary alone.

On top of that, he could be used to lure in a star to San Antonio or, at the very least, bring in some more three-point shooting or playmaking – two of the Spurs’ biggest needs this summer.

Mock trade sees Spurs flip Keldon Johnson to Heat

In this mock trade, the San Antonio Spurs would send Keldon Johnson to the MIami Heat.

The San Antonio Spurs have a few needs they should look to address this summer. One of those needs is three-point shooting, as spacing the floor next to Victor Wembanyama will be crucial to their success. Zach Buckley of Bleacher Report wrote a mock trade that would see the Spurs send Keldon Johnson to the Miami Heat for Duncan Robinson and the 15th pick in the draft.

“Miami could have a massive move up its sleeve this summer,” Buckley wrote. “Or maybe the Heat’s latest star search will end up like so many of their near-misses in recent years. Then again, maybe the Heat just don’t feel the need for such a substantial change. They were bullied by the injury bug this season and still wound up 10 games above .500, escaped the play-in tournament and snagged a double-digit playoff road win against the league’s No. 1 seed. Give them a clean bill of health, and maybe they’re back rubbing elbows with the East’s elite next season.

“The Heat could still use more scoring, though, which is how Johnson might wind up on the radar. He plays with a nonstop motor and relentless hustle, and he’s skilled enough to have netted 22.0 points per game in 2022-23 and shot 39.8 percent from three-point range the prior season. Johnson would be an intriguing way of attacking Miami’s inconsistent scoring and perhaps a cost-effective one if the Heat’s developmental staff could buff the rougher areas of his skill set.”

Adding Robinson’s shooting and a first-round pick would be a solid haul for the Spurs, but perhaps they should look to use Johnson’s salary in a trade for the star instead.

Could the Spurs’ Keldon Johnson make sense for the Nets?

With the San Antonio Spurs having 2 picks in the top-8 of the 2024 NBA Draft, could Keldon Johnson make sense for the Brooklyn Nets?

The Brooklyn Nets are in the midst of an offseason in which they have plenty of matters to address if they want to get back to the playoffs next season. After hopefully re-signing free-agent center Nic Claxton, Brooklyn could look to trade for a player that could be of use to them in their rebuild.

The Nets have plenty of players that they could go after this summer in their quest to either be better next season or be better heading into the near future. One of the players that Brooklyn could target if they decide to embark the trade market is San Antonio Spurs small forward Keldon Johnson.

While Nets Wire has already produced a list of five small forwards that the Nets could target in free-agency, Johnson is one of the players that fit into the category of a player that would be beneficial for Brooklyn to pursue. To be clear, there have not been any reports of the Spurs being rumored to exploring trades for Johnson, but anything can happen in the NBA.

Johnson, 24, is coming off a 2023-24 season in which he averaged 15.7 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 2.8 assists per game while shooting 45.4% from the field and 34.6% from three-point land. However, Johnson has had a role change within the past season as he went from starting every game that he played last season (63 games), he started in just 27 of the 69 games this season as San Antonio preferred to have his scoring role coming off the bench.

It should be noted that the Spurs have the fourth and eighth overall picks in the upcoming draft so it’s possible that San Antonio will be looking to add two more premier talents to their young core of Victor Wembanyama and Devin Vassell. If Johnson is the odd man out in this scenario, he could be shopped as the Spurs try to address some of their many needs in the journey to building around Wembanyama and Vassell.

Another trade proposal sees the San Antonio Spurs slow down their rebuild with Ben Simmons

What if the Spurs went the opposite direction from expectations?

A recent trade proposal from Andy Bailey of Bleacher Report fame had the San Antonio Spurs speed up their rebuild to get star Cleveland Cavaliers shooting guard Donovan Mitchell to play alongside San Antonio star forward Victor Wembanyama next season.

But what if the Spurs went the opposite direction from expectations, and got worse on purpose for next season? That’s exactly the idea Bailey had later on in the same article as his other San Antonio proposal. The deal would send Keldon Johnson for Simmons and a pair of second round picks added to the pot to sweeten the deal.

Noting that the 2025 draft class has much more lauded prospects like Cooper Flagg in it, the B/R analyst writes that despite the inevitable losses, “a future with Wembanyama and Flagg would be worth it.”

“Johnson may not be a surefire future star, but he’s at least a rotation player,” adds Bailey.

“Since the Nets can’t really tank—the … Rockets have control of their first-round picks through 2027—replacing Simmons’ minimal contributions with another rotation wing to pair with Mikal Bridges and Cameron Johnson would make sense.”

New trade proposal sees the San Antonio Spurs speed up their rebuild with Donovan Mitchell

Will this help the Cavs restock their war chest to refocus the rebuild around rising big man Evan Mobley?

A new trade proposal put together by Bleacher Report NBA analyst Andy Bailey sees the San Antonio Spurs speed up their rebuild with a trade that brings Cleveland Cavaliers shooting guard Donovan Mitchell to Texas.

The swap, which Bailey has as primarily focused on Spurs forward Keldon Johnson and a LOT of draft assets, would help the Cavs restock their war chest to refocus the rebuild around rising big man Evan Mobley and point guard Darius Garland. “Johnson, who averaged 22.0 points per game in 2022-23, would be an interesting piece to play alongside the young duo of … Garland and … Mobley, too,” writes the B/R analyst.

“This trade would likely make the Cavs worse in the short term, but it would be a far better outcome than losing Mitchell for nothing as a free agent in 2025,” he adds.

“Meanwhile, this move could put the Spurs in the hunt for a playoff spot as soon as next season,” suggests Bailey.

“Victor Wembanyama had a borderline All-NBA season as a rookie, and when he shared the floor with Devin Vassell and Tre Jones, the woeful Spurs outscored opponents by 10.2 points per 100 possessions.”

“Add Mitchell to that mix, and San Antonio would instantly have one of the NBA’s best one-two punches and a potential foundation for contention.”

Keldon Johnson seen as most likely San Antonio Spur to be on the move

Could Johnson be on his way out of the Spurs organization?

The San Antonio Spurs are a franchise in transition, with the team’s front office working to find the best prospective players to put around star Spurs forward Victor Wembanyama moving forward. So there will be a lot of faces currently on the roster who will find themselves in a new uniform come October, if not sooner. But which San Antonio player is most likely to be on the move?

If you ask Bleacher Report’s Greg Swartz, it is Keldon Johnson. Per Swartz, Johnson “no longer looks like a core piece for San Antonio moving forward,” despite the fact that he is “the team’s second-highest paid player behind Devin Vassell in 2024-25.”

Noting the Spurs’ need for a floor general, the B/R analyst suggests using Johnson in a potential trade to such an end, “especially if it leads to a reunion with Dejounte Murray.”

“San Antonio shouldn’t be afraid to speed up the rebuild and try to win now around Victor Wembaynama, even if it means moving Johnson for more veteran help,” suggests Swartz.

And given he is a young and productive member of San Antonio’s roster, we expect Johnson to have real value in any potential deal he might be included in, making the B/R analyst’s assessment ring true in our appraisal.

Keldon Johnson’s 2023-24 end-of-season Spurs media availability

Watch San Antonio Spurs forward Keldon Johnson’s end-of-season media availability.

Heading into the season, most of the focus was on star rookie Victor Wembanyama. However, the San Antonio Spurs have a bunch of other talented players on their roster, one of whom is Keldon Johnson. However, with Wembanyama in place, Johnson’s role took a massive hit in terms of responsibility.

In addition, Johnson’s overall place on the team jumped around a bunch. He started some games at the beginning of the season, but he ended up coming off the bench a lot by the end of the season. As the Spurs move forward with Wembanyama at the center of their plans, Johnson’s future with the team is a bit up in the air.

Regardless, after his 2023-24 season, Johnson completed his end-of-year media availability, as posted by the Spurs on their YouTube channel.

In 69 appearances for the Spurs in the 2023-24 season, Johnson averaged 15.7 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 2.8 assists while shooting 45.4% from the field and 34.6% from behind the three-point line.

Keldon Johnson trade labeled as ‘obvious’ next move for Spurs

A Keldon Johnson trade could make a ton of sense for the San Antonio Spurs this offseason.

The San Antonio Spurs need to focus on improving their roster around Victor Wembanyama this summer. That needs to be their one and only goal. Whether it be through free agency, the draft, or the trade market, they just need to get better. When looking at which Spurs should stay or go, Air Alamo’s Jahlil Williams noted that a Keldon Johnson trade is the “obvious” answer.

“If the Spurs’ desire to win games this year was not clear before, it was made obvious when they concluded the season by winning six out of their last 10 games,” Williams wrote. “That tells fans the expectation was much higher. After just barely winning enough games to avoid a franchise-worst record, changes need to be made and Keldon is an obvious trade piece that must be utilized.”

Johnson has already experienced a drop-off in minutes and production with the emergence of Wembanyama. Trading him could help the Spurs bring in win-now talent that fits their roster better.

Add in the fact that he has a very trade-friendly contract, and a Johnson trade makes a ton of sense if the Spurs find one they like.

Keldon Johnson says Spurs are ‘striving in the right direction’

Keldon Johnson is very excited about the future of the San Antonio Spurs.

When the San Antonio Spurs began this season, there were high expectations for rookie Victor Wembanyama. The 7-foor-4 Frenchman was heralded as one of the best prospects in decades, and throughout the year, he lived up to those sky-high expectations. Wembanyama has been amazing this season, and with him, the Spurs have steadily improved.

Though they finished toward the bottom of the Western Conference, they picked up the pace toward the end of the season. They won seven of their last 11 games, most of which were without some of their core players, as San Antonio shut some people down for the season.

“Even when we don’t win, we’re still getting better,” Johnson said. “I feel like we are striving in the right direction. I feel like we are right there and it is only a matter of time.”

With Wembanyama, Johnson, Devin Vassell, Jeremy Sochan, and others, the Spurs are set up for a great next few years of basketball, at the very least.
