WATCH: Keith Smith discusses his long NFL journey with Jim Rome

Falcons fullback Keith Smith talk with Jim Rome about his long NFL journey, which includes getting cut by the Cowboys seven times in a single season.

The Atlanta Falcons will not have a preseason to get the kinks out in 2020 as the NFLPA announced its official cancellation on Tuesday evening.

While fans may not care about the preseason, it’s how players make NFL rosters without being highly-touted prospects. Count Falcons fullback Keith Smith among those who wouldn’t be where he is today without the league’s exhibition period.

Smith joined the Jim Rome Show on Tuesday to explain what it takes to make it when the odds are stacked against you. Watch him talk with Rome about his long journey into the league, which includes getting cut by the Cowboys seven times in a single season.

Atlanta Falcons FB Keith Smith can’t wait to start blocking for Todd Gurley

Atlanta Falcons FB Keith Smith is excited to start blocking for UGA football great Todd Gurley this back in Georgia.

The Atlanta Falcons made a lot of people happy when they brought former UGA running back Todd Gurley back to Georgia this offseason.

The former NFL Offensive Player of the Year, Gurley is hoping for a fresh start in Atlanta following an incredible run in Los Angeles that was eventually halted by his hurt knee.

If Gurley is able to turn back the clock and play like he did just two seasons ago, the sky is the limit for the Falcons offense.

Playing for L.A., the Rams did not utilize a fullback in their offense, so how Gurley performs with a lead blocker in front of him in Atlanta will be interesting to see this season.

Falcons fullback Keith Smith, however, cannot wait to begin moving bodies out of Gurley’s way this year.

“I’m just excited for what he’s going to bring, because I know he’s got a ton of game left in him,” Smith told Ian Rapoport on his podcast “Rapsheet + Friends.”

“He’s smooth, man. If you watch Todd, he’s got great vision and he hits the hole and he goes. I just love that about him. I don’t think he had a fullback in Los Angeles, so it’s going to be dope to open up holes for him and see that part of his game open up for him.

“He’s not an easy guy to tackle, and you always love guys like that. You love blocking for a guy like that, because you know he’s going to make the first guy miss. Just knowing the type of player that he is, he’s going to help our team a lot and I’m excited about that, man.”

Report: Disney in ‘serious talks’ w/ NBA as location to restart season

The Athletic reports Disney’s Orlando-area park complex is in ‘serious talks’ to be the single-site location to finish the NBA’s suspended 2019-20 season.

If this ends up working out, Yahoo Sports’ Keith Smith ought to get some kind of hardware from NBA Commissioner Adam Silver.

Smith was, of course, the first to suggest resuming the currently-suspended 2019-20 NBA season at Orlando, Florida’s Walt Disney World Resort due to the numerous advantages it has over competing locations in terms of comfort, safety and ease of adaptation.

It is now being reported that location is “the clear frontrunner” to become a single-site location to finish out the remainder of the pandemic-suspended season reports The Athletic’s Shams Charania and Sam Amick.

While any timetable for such a return is still nebulous at best, but “players fully training in mid-June and playing by mid-July has been the most popular and possible scenario,” according to the two authors.

Multiple-city scenarios were also on the table, and Houston as another single-site option were evidently also under consideration, but as of now, the primary remaining obstacles for a Disney finish are “final details regarding testing and hotel use.”

Disney’s employee union will also need to be on board with whatever plans are made as being safe enough for its members to work with, and the local conditions concerning COVID-19 will also need to be permitting.

So far, while Florida has been among the harder-hit parts of the U.S. in the pandemic, the Orlando area has been much safer than the state as a whole.

Falcons to give FB Keith Smith a three-year extension

The Atlanta Falcons will reportedly be signing fullback Keith Smith to a three-year extension.

The Atlanta Falcons will reportedly be signing fullback Keith Smith to a three-year extension:

Smith, a six-year NFL veteran that signed in Atlanta last season, was part of head coach Dan Quinn’s plan to become a more physical, run-heavy offense. The team fell well short of that goal, however, rushing for just 85.1 yards per game in 2019.

At 27-years-old, the Falcons still believe Smith brings something different than what the team already has in Ito Smith and Devonta Freeman.
