World Wide Technology Championship 2024 odds, course history and picks to win

Let’s get a winner south of the border.

The PGA Tour is back in action this week for the World Wide Technology Championship south of the border. The Tiger Woods-designed El Cardonal at Diamante Cabo San Lucas in Los Cabos, Mexico, once again plays host after making its Tour debut in 2023.

Cameron Young — still looking for his first win — headlines the field and will be joined by defending champion Erik van Rooyen, Lucas Glover, Harris English, Keith Mitchell, Maverick McNealy and Beau Hossler, among others. Zozo Championship winner Nico Echavarria — finished T-31 at El Cardonal last year — will also tee it up Thursday.

This week’s winner will go home with $1.296 million of the $7.2 million purse, as well as 500 FedEx Cup points.

Things to keep in mind

  • Fairways and greens are extremely easy to hit at this golf course. This tournament will come down to proximity to the hole and who has the hot flat-stick.
  • van Rooyen won at 27 under last year, and the weather for the week looks good. Expect a similar winning score and target players who make a lot of birdies.
  • Three stats we’ll prioritize: Birdie percentage, proximity from the fairway and Strokes Gained: Putting.

World Wide Technology Championship picks to win

Cameron Young (20/1)

2024 Rocket Mortgage Classic

Analysis: Young has burned me more times than I’d like to remember, but this spot sets up so well for him. Not many players on Tour can make birdies in bunches as well as Young does, just look at the 59 he posted earlier this season at the Travelers. Plus, he’s the one big name in this rank-and-file field. Hopefully, he can take advantage of that and grab his first Tour win.

Update: Young has withdrawn from the event.

Keith Mitchell (30/1)

Analysis: This pick makes me a little nervous thanks to Mitchell’s case of the Sunday Scaries, but I’m rolling with him anyway. This season, Mitchell ranks T-4 in proximity from the fairway and second in birdie average, only behind world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler. And yes, he’s missed two cuts in a row. However, he played some great golf at the Sanderson Farms Championship in early October, where he finished T-3 after being the 54-hole leader.

Michael Kim (45/1)

2024 Shriners Children's Open

Analysis: Kim is known by most fans for his Twitter/X presence, but I like this spot for the 31-year-old. He’s fresh off a T-5 finish at the Shriners Children’s Open, and he tied for 23rd at El Cardonal in 2023. This season, Kim ranks 12th in proximity from the fairway and sixth in birdie average. All signs point to the Cal product having a nice week in Mexico.

Patton Kizzire (60/1)

Analysis: Kizzire is coming off a missed cut at the Shriners Children’s Open in Las Vegas, but has played some great golf during the FedEx Cup Fall, including a win at the Procore Championship and a T-11 finish at the Sanderson Farms Championship. Like Mitchell, Kizzire thrives in two of our key categories for the week. He’s T-4 in proximity from the fairway and fifth in birdie average. Last season, Kizzire finished T-15 at this event.

Here are 8 big names to miss the cut at the 2024 Shriners Children’s Open

These players are headed home early.

After a lengthy wind delay caused a late start on Friday for the second round, the cut has been made Saturday afternoon at the 2024 Shriners Children’s Open at TPC Summerlin in Las Vegas.

Tom Kim, the 2022 and 2023 winner of this event, was 1-under total when he finished his second round and he’ll head home early thanks to the 36-hole cut coming in at 3-under 139. Kim, who hasn’t played a Tour event since the FedEx St. Jude Championship during the playoffs, is not in the field for next week’s Zozo Championship in Japan.

While the third round will begin Saturday afternoon in Sin City, here’s a quick look at eight notable names who missed the cut at the Shriners Children’s Open.

Can Yu believe it? Kevin Yu gets first PGA Tour win via playoff at Sanderson Farms Championship

What a way to get your first PGA Tour win.

Kevin Yu is a PGA Tour winner.

The 26-year-old from Chinese Taipei made a birdie on the 72nd hole to tie the lead, then he stuffed his approach on the par-4 18th on the first playoff hole, converted the birdie and knocked off Beau Hossler to get his first PGA Tour victory at the 2024 Sanderson Farms Championship.

Hossler and Yu were tied at 23 under after 72 holes, but Hossler’s approach shot in the playoff forced him to hit a low hooking approach shot into the greenside bunker. He hit a brilliant sand shot to a couple feet, but Yu’s great approach himself let to a birdie and a PGA Tour victory.

This is the third straight year and fourth time in six events the Sanderson Farms has been decided by a playoff.

Watch: While co-leading the Sanderson Farms Championship, Keith Mitchell asked a fan for college football scores

Mitchell was catching up on the Bulldogs.

When you go to a school like the University of Georgia, college football becomes part of who you are.

Just ask Keith Mitchell.

Mitchell, 32, went to school in Athens and is a huge Bulldog fan, as are fellow PGA Tour players Kevin Kisner, Harris English and Brian Harman.

After a 67 on Thursday and 64 on Friday, Michell was 5 under during the third round on Saturday and tied for the lead through 15 holes at the Sanderson Farms Championship in Jackson, Mississippi.

The one thing going against him, however, was the fact that Georgia was taking on Auburn during his round.

On one of The Country Club of Jackson’s tee boxes, Mitchell asked a fan if he was looking at college football scores. After the fan said yes, Mitchell immediately asked for an update on the Georgia game (plus a check-in with Alabama).

Who is the best dressed on the PGA Tour? Players were asked, and their answers varied

Any guesses on which name popped up the most?

Who is the best-dressed player on the PGA Tour?

That was the question proposed to numerous Tour players ahead of the 2024 Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill Club & Lodge in Orlando, Florida. The PGA Tour posted a video a little more than a minute long on its social media accounts Wednesday, and it led to some fun answers.

Up first was Rory McIlroy, who said he thought it was Sam Ryder. Also asked the question were Tom Kim, Max Homa, Ludvig Aberg and Xander Schauffele, among numerous others.

The name that popped up the most? Take a minute and watch the hilarious video below to find out:

Josh Allen, Keith Mitchell have strong finish at 2024 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am

How Josh Allen’s latest golf outing went:

A huge second round for Josh Allen and his partner, PGA pro Keith Mitchell, got the two into the top 10 on the leaderboard at the 2024 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

And they beat Tom Brady, too.

Allen and Brady ended up being in the same foursome (along with PGA pro Keegan Bradley) throughout the two-day event on Thursday and Friday.

When their scorecards were turned in, it was Allen on top for the first time against Brady.

In the first round, Allen and Mitchell shot a three-under par. Then on Day 2, they went on a tear. Their 11-under put the duo at 14-under for the tournament. Allen and Mitchell ended up finishing in a tie for sixth place.

The Allen-Mitchell score ended up besting Brady and Bradley by two strokes.

Allen told Golf Digest the two QBs had a wager on the head-to-head matchup that he won. However, he declined to reveal what it was.

Rory McIlroy and Jeff Rhodes took the top spot at 17-under.

See their records here.

This week, a loaded 80-man field is on the Monterey Peninsula for the PGA Tour’s second signature event of the year, the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

The Crosby Clambake will look a bit different this time around, with the celebrity amateurs playing in just the first two rounds. Monterey Peninsula Country Club has been removed from the rotation, so the field will play Pebble Beach Golf Links and Spyglass Hill over the first two days before just the pros take on Pebble over the weekend.

Thanks to its elevated status, this year’s AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am boasts its best-ever field that includes Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy, Xander Schaufelle, Patrick Cantlay, Max Homa, Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas.

Here are 10 of the best performers from the last five AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Ams.

Despite the big names, there are a few sleepers to keep an eye on.

Keith Mitchell and friends return for third Tito’s Shorties Classic at Butler Pitch & Putt

It’s a one-of-a-kind golf outing but with a new twist.

It’s a one-of-a-kind golf outing but with a new twist.

The third Tito’s Shorties Classic, which was filmed at Butler Pitch & Putt in Austin, Texas, will air on Golf Channel on Feb. 6 at 10:30 p.m. ET.

The new feature of this year’s event is the collab of PGA Tour golfers with some of the leading social media influencers in the game. The three teams are Keith Mitchell and Robby Berger, Harry Higgs and Nick Stubbe, and Joel Dahmen and Joseph Demare.

“I would say that the Butler Pitch & Putt in Austin is honestly the most fun version of golf I can think of because it really, it’s constant action, it’s quick. It only takes you about an hour to play nine holes. Your level of golf is less important,” Mitchell told Golfweek on Monday from the Monterey Peninsula, where he is getting ready to compete in what he called “the best of the best,” the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. But while Pebble is a pressure-packed PGA Tour event, the Tito’s Shorties Classic is nothing but fun.

“When you get to do the event with the Bob Does Sports crew and Tito’s it just brings an entire additional level of fun to an event that otherwise is pretty unique in the world of golf, where you have the ability to enjoy, you know, a fun, fan-filled event that’s not time-consuming.”

And the game needs this kind of experience, for all types of golfers, Mitchell said.

“That’s what I think Butler Pitch & Putt really embodies. I really hope that more of these venues, regardless of, you know, the Tito Shorties’s Classic, more of these venues could be spread across the U.S. and golf in general because it’s just a very good access point and entertainment value to any level of golfer.

“At Pebble Beach they have The Hay, which is full all the time and that’s a lot of fun. I played it yesterday [Sunday]. Pinehurst, they have The Cradle. And with Butler Pitch & Putt there are just three really good examples of how a good, approachable version of golf could work across the country.”
