Neither chilly weather nor a suspension of play can stop Sahith Theegala, Shane Lowry and Jordan Spieth from making birdies at WM Phoenix Open

Here are five things to know from the first day at TPC Scottsdale.

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – Sahith Theegala is ranked No. 22 in the Official World Golf Ranking but he may be more proud of his chess ranking.

“I’m at my all-time Blitz rating right now. Like, I don’t want to play, because I know I’m going to drop a bunch,” he said.

Theegala’s golf ranking may surge to a new high – his best is No. 18 – if he keeps playing like he did Thursday during the first round of the WM Phoenix Open. Theegala posted 6-under 65 at TPC Scottsdale to grab a two-stroke lead over Shane Lowry and S.H. Kim among the finishers before play was suspended due to darkness at 6:10 p.m. local time (8:10 p.m. ET).

“It’s not often where kind of every part of the game actually kind of clicks during the course of the round,” Theegala said. “It felt like through the bag I did something good with every club.”

Theegala birdied six of his first 13 holes, including a pitch-in for birdie at No. 2.

“I tried to fly it pretty close to the hole and nip it,” Theegala explained. “I didn’t hit it incredibly, so it landed on the down slope and got there. So, it was a great scenario into the wind and it’s always nice to see it drop.”

Theegala made his lone bogey of the day at No. 5 right before play was suspended due to unplayable conditions.

“I was relieved when the horn blew, yes,” said Theegala, who enjoyed lunch with his parents and played some chess puzzles during the break and then made birdie at No. 6 when play resumed.

“Really happy with the start,” he said. “I played great and that’s all I can do, really.”

Sleeper picks for the 2024 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am

Get ya sleepers here!

The AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am is going to look a lot different this week. The amateurs will play the first two rounds at Pebble Beach and Spyglass Hill — Monterey Peninsula Country Club was removed from the rotation — before it’s just the pros at Pebble over the weekend.

And thanks to its elevated status to a signature event, the field is absolutely loaded with star power. World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler will be joined by Rory McIlroy, Viktor Hovland, Xander Schauffele, Patrick Cantlay, Max Homa, Collin Morikawa, Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas, just to name a few.

Despite the big names, there are a few sleepers to keep an eye on.

Pebble Beach Pro-Am: Odds, picks to win

Max Homa’s title defense, low scores and the return of Michael Block lead 2024 Farmers Insurance Open Wednesday highlights

Calm conditions made Torrey Pines ripe for the picking Wednesday, especially the North Course.

SAN DIEGO — Record rainfall caused flooding and power outages across the county in the days leading up to the 2024 Farmers Insurance Open, which made for a soggy start to the PGA Tour’s annual trip to Torrey Pines.

A whopping 107 of the 156 players in the field were even par or better on a calm Wednesday at the 36-hole muni gem along the cliffs of the Pacific Ocean (No. 39 in Golfweek’s Best public courses list). And yes, the often gettable North Course produced significantly more birdies than the tricky South Course.

Kevin Yu leads the way after a bogey-free, 8-under 64, but the 25-year-old’s birdie fest wasn’t the only notable story from the first round. From a title defense in the making to signature event bubble watch and another sponsor exemption in the mix, here’s what you need to know about Wednesday at the 2024 Farmers Insurance Open.

BLAINE, Minn. — Lee Hodges is pulling a Brian Harman.

Last week, Harman led by five shots after 54 holes in his triumph at the British Open. This week, it’s a completely different set of circumstances, but Hodges’ lead is five with 18 holes to play.

The second-year Tour pro has played flawless golf and led after every round of the 3M Open at TPC Twin Cities. Coming into the week on the outside of the FedEx Cup Playoffs bubble, Hodges needed a big week to punch his ticket in the field at the FedEx St. Jude Championship in Memphis. He’s doing just that.

Although it may be a big lead, a reminder: last year in Minnesota, Scott Piercy led by four after three rounds and was up by that many on the back nine and lost.
