Seawolves will throw an experienced defense at the Ducks

Stony Brook will bring an experienced defense into Autzen Stadium and will do their best to stand toe-to-toe with the Ducks.

Giving up just three points in a football game is no joke, no matter who you play, at either the FCS or FBS level.

In Stony Brook’s last contest, the Seawolves allowed Colgate a field goal on their opening possession and that’s it. For the next 53 minutes, the Raiders were held off the scoreboard in the 24-3 Stony Brook victory.

The Seawolves put out a defense filled with seniors and graduate seniors and it’s that same group that will try to hold their own against the No. 4 Oregon Ducks.

They’re led by linebacker Reidgee Dimanche, a fifth-year senior that was named second-team preseason All-Colonial Athletic Conference by Phil Steele. In 2019, Dimanche started all 12 games, and his 87 total tackles were the second-most on the team.

Dimanche isn’t the only experienced player on the Seawolves defense. Of the 11 starters, 10 are redshirt juniors or older. Redshirt freshman linebacker Tyler King is the only underclassman starting.

According to Stony Brook defensive coordinator Rob Noel, King used the extra practice time this past spring to his full advantage.

“He was injured for most of the spring, but Tyler prepared in a way to where he was ready to stand up and take his moment,” he told the Seawolves student media before the season began. “Since he’s done that, he’s been able to run with it.”

Stony Brook will present a hybrid of the 3-4 defense, something that might take Oregon a little time to get used to. Casey Williams, a 6-foot-2 fifth-year senior, plays a position the Seawolves call “Anchor.” It’s similar to what Kayvon Thibodeaux plays for the Ducks, a combination of defensive end and linebacker.

Williams started all 12 games in 2019 and collected 44 total tackles with 17 solo stops…Recorded at least one tackle in all 12 games with six games with at least four tackles. Against Colgate last week, Williams managed just three tackles, but he had 1.5 tackles for loss and a sack.

BREAKING: Kayvon Thibodeaux, Justin Flowe both ‘OUT’ for game vs. Ohio State

BREAKING: Both Kayvon Thibodeaux and Justin Flowe will be out vs. Ohio State, dealing a huge blow to the Oregon defense.

The Ducks suffered a brutal blow ahead of the game vs. Ohio State on Saturday morning.

It has now been confirmed that both Kayvon Thibodeaux and Justin Flowe will miss the game due to injury.

Thibodeaux did not warm up with the team and rather stood in street clothes on the sideline while skill position players warmed up in front of him. Flowe was not seen at all warming up before the game.

FOX Sports reporter Bruce Feldman weighed in before the game, saying that he heard Thibodeaux was ‘doubtful to play.’

“Hearing that Oregon star edge rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux is very doubtful to play today at Ohio State,” Feldman said on Twitter. “He’s not been able to do much in practice this week on his ankle beyond rehab work.”

There have been rumors throughout the week that Flowe was dealing with a foot injury suffered in practice, but nothing confirmed. The fact that he is not playing obviously tells you what you need to know for the time being, but as far as his long-term outlook, we still don’t know.

Throughout the week, head coach Mario Cristobal provided a couple of updates, mentioning that things were progressing in the right direction. However, Cristobal said on Wednesday that Thibodeaux would be day-to-day leading up to the game.

In Week 1, Thibodeaux went down after getting rolled up on, but he eventually returned to the field after getting his ankle taped. Following halftime, however, Thibodeaux didn’t return, and instead was standing on the sideline in street clothes with a walking boot.

With Thibodeaux out of the game, the Ducks will have to rely on Jake Shipley and Treven Ma’ae at the Joker linebacker position.

The injury to Flowe has a potential to be huge for the Ducks, who lost LB Dru Mathis last week against Fresno State. A position that was already thin for Oregon just got thinner.

Report: Injury update on Oregon defensive end Kayvon Thibodeaux for game against Ohio State

The latest on Oregon defensive end Kayvon Thibodeaux’s status for Ohio State.

It looks like Oregon Ducks defensive end Kayvon Thibodeaux may not be able to go today against Ohio State. According to a Tweet from FOX Sports’ Bruce Feldman, Thibodeaux is “very doubtful” to play vs. the Buckeyes in Columbus this afternoon.

This is a very significant development of course. Thibodeaux is Oregon’s best player and a potential top-five pick in the 2022 NFL draft. His ability to get off the edge and get to the quarterback could have put some significant stress on freshman quarterback C.J. Stroud.

If he can’t go, Ohio State’s offensive line will still have to play well, but the threat of sacks and interceptions won’t be as much of a X-factor for the Ducks’ efforts to pull off the upset.

This is still going to be a good game, but you have to think that an explosive Ohio State offense will be able to operate with more precision and productivity without arguably the country’s best pass rusher out of the equation.

Oregon’s Kayvon Thibodeaux (ankle) doubtful vs. Ohio State

Oregon’s Kayvon Thibodeaux is doubtful for Saturday’s game against Ohio State due to an ankle injury

Oregon edge defender Kayvon Thibodeaux is doubtful to play in Saturday’s game against Ohio State, per Bruce Feldman of Fox Sports.

Thibodeaux suffered an ankle injury in the Ducks’ first game of the season last weekend.

Widely regarded as the top overall prospect in the 2022 NFL draft class, it looks like Thibodeaux won’t be available for the Ducks’ biggest game of the season.

BREAKING: Oregon’s Kayvon Thibodeaux ‘Doubtful’ vs. Ohio State

To the dismay of Oregon Duck fans everywhere, it appears that star defensive end Kayvon Thibodeaux will not be playing against the Ohio State Buckeyes on Saturday.

Oregon vs. Ohio State: Ducks Wire staff predictions and opinions

It’s going to take a perfect game for the Ducks to upset Ohio State, but we made our predictions, with one Ducks Wire writer saying it will happen.

The season started off with a bang for the Oregon Ducks a week ago as they defeated the Fresno State Bulldogs at home, but the win left fans wanting to see a bit more from their team.

While it was nice to watch a live football game take place in Autzen Stadium once again, the real main event comes this weekend in Columbus, Ohio. The No. 12 Ducks are traveling to take on the No. 3 Buckeyes in the FOX Big Noon Kickoff game, which will arguably the marquee game of the weekend.

Heading into the game, we’ve tried to give you everything that you need to know about where Oregon currently stands with the health of Kayvon Thibodeaux, how dominant both the offense and defense for Ohio State can be, and what we want to see from the Ducks this week around.

Now one of the only things left to do is actually make our predictions.

As will happen every week of the season, the managing editor of Ducks Wire, Zachary Neel, will convene with staff writers Don Smalley and Andy Patton to preview the game, set expectations, and ultimately make a final prediction.

Here’s what Ducks Wire thinks about the game against Ohio State:

The Rushing Attack

Question: It took a while for Oregon’s running game to get rolling against Fresno State, but we saw Minnesota have major success against Ohio State in that department last week. How much of an impact will CJ Verdell and Travis Dye have on Saturday? What do you think their stat-lines will be?

Zachary Neel: I do think that the Ducks are going to be able to find some success in this game, and it’s going to come off of the backs of both CJ Verdell and Travis Dye. They struggled to get going against Fresno, but Verdell got into a groove in the 4th quarter and helped put the game away for the Ducks. I think we can expect Oregon to come out and rely heavily on the rush early on, hoping to jump on Ohio State early and keep the ball away from the offense. In the end, I could see Verdell eclipsing 100-yards with 2 TDs, while Dye adds maybe 50-yards on the ground, with another 40-50 in receiving out of the backfield

Don Smalley: Minnesota’s Mohamed Ibrahim managed to run for 163 yards and two touchdowns, so the Buckeyes’ run defense isn’t incredible. Oregon’s offensive line is going to have to play better this week. If they assume they can just wear down the Buckeyes defensive line and wait to create holes in the fourth quarter, it’ll be way too late. The Ducks need to establish some kind of run game that tOSU respects to keep them off balance.  If the upset occurs, Verdell goes for 120 and a couple of scores, and Dye goes for 80-90 yards with a score.

Andy Patton: How Verdell and Dye perform on Saturday will be, in my mind, the biggest x-factor between a win and a loss. Ohio State was vulnerable against the run last week, but Oregon will need to establish their running game early in the contest to get the Buckeyes on their heels. That will ease the pressure to perform off Brown in the early going while controlling the time of possession for the Ducks.

If the two backs can combine for three touchdowns and 200 or so rushing yards, this could be an upset. Anything less than that and things get a lot trickier.

5 questions we hope the Ducks answer against Ohio State this weekend

Oregon faces a major test against the No. 3 Buckeyes this weekend, and after a frustrating game vs. Fresno State, we need some answers to these questions.

Do you remember a week ago when we went into the Oregon Ducks’ season opener against Fresno State extremely excited, noting that we were finally going to get some answers to a slew of questions that had popped up during the offseason?

Man, were we young and innocent back then.

While some things did become clear in the Ducks 31-24 win over the Bulldogs — yes, it looks like Justin Flowe is the real deal — we are still left wondering many of the same things. Which freshman QB has landed the backup job? Who is Anthony Brown’s emergency WR? What is the Ducks’ plan at RB behind CJ Verdell and Travis Dye?

While none of those things got answered in what turned out to be a much more competitive game than we anticipated, a whole crop of new quandaries came about. Here are five new questions that we hope Oregon will answer against No. 3 Ohio State this weekend.

Oregon head coach Mario Cristobal provides injury update on game wrecking defensive end Kayvon Thibodeaux

Here’s the injury update on Oregon star defensive end Kayvon Thibodeux. #GoBucks

We’ve been following the news coming out of Eugene, Oregon on the status of Ducks’ monster defensive end Kayvon Thibodeaux. He got rolled up on and sprained an ankle in the first half vs. Fresno State and had to leave the game, later reappearing with a walking boot.

Just a couple of days after that, Oregon head coach Mario Cristobal declared the future NFL draft first-rounder as “day-to-day,” with hopes that he’d be ready to go this Saturday when the Ducks travel to Columbus to take on Ohio State in a top twelve matchup.

We got another update today from Cristobal and the status has not changed. Thibodeaux is still “day-to-day” according to the Oregon head man.

“We’re open and honest with injuries,” said Cristobal … “We don’t head fake anybody. We’re trying to get him ready to play. We’ll see where he’s at closer to game time.”

We’ll continue to follow this story, but this Oregon defensive line is a completely different one without him in the lineup. If he can go, how strange would it be for the best player on the field to not be wearing an Ohio State uniform in the ‘Shoe?

Cristobal did say that Thibodeaux was “improving.” “Trying to get there. We’re not there yet,” continued Cristobal.

I don’t know if we’ll get any further word on Thibodeaux’s until he either runs out of the tunnel on Saturday or not, but if we do, we’ll be on top of it.

BREAKING: Kayvon Thibodeaux still day-to day; no decision regarding Ohio State

In his Wednesday meeting with the press, Oregon coach Mario Cristobal says his star defensive end is day-to-day

Mario Cristobal announced in his media availability on Wednesday afternoon that Oregon’s star defender Kayvon Thibodeaux is still day-to-day.

Unfortunately, it seems that progress may not be as quick as we previously hoped, with Thibodeaux’s availability for the game looking doubtful. With Thibodeaux unable to play, the Ducks will be at a major loss, especially when it comes to creating pressure on CJ Stroud and the Ohio State passing offense.

Thibodeaux missed the second half of the game against Fresno State on Saturday after having a lineman roll up on his ankle late in the first quarter. Thibodeaux initially came back into the game after getting his ankle taped, but ultimately sat the second half while wearing street clothes and a walking boot.

When meeting with the media on Monday, Cristobal said that they were taking things day-by-day, but that Thibodeaux was “improving.”

Now, it seems that things haven’t been able to progress as quickly as they would have hoped, so Oregon could go into its biggest road game ever without its best player. The Ducks certainly need him with Ohio State boasting one of the best offenses in the nation. A dominant passing attack led by quarterback CJ Stroud, sporting All-American receivers Chris Olave and Garrett Wilson, the Buckeyes have the ability to score with anyone, and potentially blow out opponents who can’t keep up.

But with or without Thibodeaux, a big part of Oregon’s potential success will rely on the defense’s ability to create pressure on Stroud and get him out of the pocket. If the Ducks want to be successful in that venture, everyone on the defense will have to bring their A-game in order to pull off the upset. Thibodeaux’s probable absence does make the chances of a shocking victory even less likely than it already was.

Oregon head coach Mario Cristobal updates the status of star defensive end Kayvon Thibodeaux

Here’s the latest on Oregon monster defensive end Kayvon Thibodeaux’s injury and whether he’ll be available for the Ohio State game.

In case you missed an interesting development over the weekend, arguably the best defensive end in the country, Oregon’s Kayvon Thibodeaux, was injured during the Ducks’ opening game against Fresno State. It happened in the first quarter as the future first-rounder was rolled up on.

He tried to come back in the game, but was later shelved for the remainder of the contest and seen on the sidelines in street clothes and wearing a walking boot. He was having his usual game-wrecking game prior to the injury, and without him, the Ducks had to persevere and tough out a seven-point win against the Bulldogs.

Now it’s turn the page time, and many are wondering if Thibodeaux will be ready when the Ducks fly into Ohio Stadium to take on a top-five ranked Buckeye squad. Generally, coming out in a walking boot does not equate to a tight turnaround of being able to play in the following week’s contest, but maybe it was just precautionary.

We do have a little bit of an update, but it’s about what we figured it would be so close to the event. When appearing before the media on Monday, Oregon head coach Mario Cristobal provided a status on Thibodeaux and kept the door open to him working his way back.

“He’s improving, so it’ll be a day-to-day thing, and by Tuesday or Wednesday I’ll give you guys an update on him,” Said Cristobal. “He got rolled up on him, you guys saw it on film. One of their linemen had driven one of our guys into the ground — he rolled into the back of his legs — caught his ankle a little bit. So, he had an ankle sprain and that’s what we’re working through.”

Obviously, we’ll keep an eye on what kind of update we get on Thibodeaux from the head coach here around Tuesday or Wednesday, but don’t expect more than a day-to-day status leading all the way into the game Saturday.

And, according to the depth chart, Oregon still has him listed as a starter, so there’s that as well.

Oregon’s chances of winning this game by getting to the quarterback and getting push into the backfield on running plays go down significantly if Thibodeaux is unavailable for the game.

More to come. Here’s to hoping the best player on Oregon’s team can go full speed, and we get to see two teams at their best duking it out Saturday afternoon.
