Lady Vols defeat Ole Miss to open SEC play

Tennessee opens SEC play with a victory against Ole Miss.

Tennessee (6-1-1, 1-0 SEC) defeated Ole Miss (5-5, 0-1 SEC), 2-1, Thursday at Regal Soccer Stadium in the Southeastern Conference opener for both schools.

Tennessee allowed a goal for the first time in seven matches. Tennessee last conceded a goal in its season opener against Indiana on Aug. 15.

Kate Runyon totaled one goal and one assist in the match for the Lady Vols.

The Lady Vols led, 1-0, after Runyon scored an unassisted goal in the 26th minute. The Rebels tied the game in the 25th minute when Kelly Brady scored.

Tennessee’s Sammi Woods scored Tennessee’s second goal in the 60th minute. Runyon was credited with an assist.

The Lady Vols outshot Ole Miss, 13-8, and recorded 10 shots in the first half. Tennessee had eight of its scoring chances land on goal. The Rebels had three shots on goal.

Lady Vols’ goalkeeper Ally Zazzara recorded two saves in the match.

Lady Vols shut out Lipscomb soccer

Tennessee soccer records third win of the season after defeating Lipscomb on Sunday.

Tennessee (3-1) defeated Lipscomb (1-1-1) on Sunday at Regal Soccer Stadium.

Ally Brown and Kate Runyon scored goals in the Lady Vols’ shutout win. Tennessee led, 1-0, after an own goal by Lipscomb in the sixth minute.

Runyon scored in the 27th minute and Luciana Latino was credited with an assist. Brown’s goal took place in the 51st minute and was assisted by Sarah Bridenstine.

11 of Tennessee’s 21 shots were on goal, while Lipscomb recorded six shots (two on goal) in the in-state match.

Goalkeepers Ally Zazzara and Cayden Norris recorded one save each for Tennessee.

Tennessee will next play Duke on Sept. 1. Kickoff is slated for 5 p.m. EDT in Durham, North Carolina.

Indiana defeats Lady Vols in season opener

Indiana defeats Tennessee soccer in season opener.

The Lady Vols opened its 2024 soccer season on Thursday.

Indiana (1-0-0) defeated Tennessee (0-1-0), 1-0, at Yeagley Field at Bill Armstrong Stadium in Bloomington, Indiana.

Tennessee and the Hoosiers were tied, 0-0, at halftime. Indiana led the contest, 1-0, after a goal by Kennedy Neighbors in the 50th minute.

The Hoosiers outshot Tennessee, 10-7, in the match and each team recorded four scoring chances on goal.

Kate Runyon totaled two shots on goal for Tennessee, while Sammi Woods and Reese Mattern recorded one shot on goal each for the Lady Vols.

Tennessee goalkeeper Ally Zazzara recorded three saves in the match.

Tennessee will next play Sunday against Chattanooga at Regal Soccer Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. EDT.

Four Lady Vols named to SEC preseason watch list

Four Lady Vol student-athletes named to 2024 SEC preseason watch list.

Tennessee will open its 2024 soccer season on Thursday at Indiana. Kickoff between the Vols and Hoosiers is slated for 8 p.m. EDT and can be watched on Big Ten Network+.

Ahead of the Lady Vols’ opening match, four Tennessee student-athletes were named to 2024 Southeastern Conference preseason watch list: Redshirt senior forward Jaida Thomas, junior midfielder Mac Midgley, graduate student forward Sammi Woods and sophomore forward Kate Runyon.

Tennessee advanced to the NCAA Tournament second-round in 2023 under head coach Joe Kirt.

Kirt enters his third season as the Lady Vols’ head coach. He was also an assistant coach for 15 seasons at Tennessee.

Three Lady Vols earn All-SEC soccer honors

Three Lady Vols earn All-SEC soccer honors in 2023.

Three Tennessee soccer players received All-SEC honors Sunday when the league office announced the coaches’ postseason teams.

Junior midfielder Jordan Fusco received first-team honors. Graduate transfer Sizzy Lawton, who plays midfielder and forward for the Lady Vols, received second team honors, while forward Kate Runyon was named to the SEC All-Freshman Team.

Fusco, a member of the SEC All-Freshman Team in 2021, totaled six goals and four assists and led Tennessee in points (16) during the regular-season.

Lawton, a transfer from Penn, recorded six goals and two assists, while appearing in every match for the Lady Vols. She ranked third on the team with 14 points.

In her first collegiate season, Runyon, a forward, totaled six goals and two assists, appearing in 14 games and making five starts before missing time due to injury.

Lady Vols suffer second consecutive loss

Georgia (7-3-4, 3-2-2 SEC) defeated Tennessee (6-4-4, 1-3-3 SEC), 2-1, Friday at Regal Soccer Stadium.

Friday’s loss is the Lady Vols’ second consecutive after three straight ties.

Tennessee scored the contests first goal in the first 35 seconds into the match. Kate Runyon scored her fourth goal of the season and Jordan Fusco was  credited with an assist for Tennessee.

The Bulldogs tied the game, 1-1, on an unassisted goal by Hannah White in the second minute, her fourth during the 2023 campaign.

Georgia’s Summer Denigan scored an eventual game winning goal in the 74th minute.

Tennessee outshot the Bulldogs, 9-8, with four of its scoring opportunities landing on goal. Georgia had three shots on goal in the match.

Lady Vols suffer loss at LSU

Tennessee soccer suffers loss at LSU.

LSU (8-5-1, 3-3-0 SEC) defeated Tennessee (6-3-4, 1-2-3 SEC), 1-0, Sunday at LSU Soccer Stadium in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

Ava Galligan scored her second goal of the 2023 season for LSU in the 51st minute. Rammie Noel was credited with an assist.

Tennessee outshot the Tigers, 13-11. The Lady Vols had eight scoring chances land on goal and outshot LSU, 9-1, in the first half. The Tigers finished with seven shots on goal.

Kate Runyon had four shots on goal for Tennessee.

Abby Reisz started at goalkeeper for the Lady Vols and made one save. Ally Zazzara entered the match at goalkeeper after halftime and made four saves.

Kate Runyon scores goal for Lady Vols at South Carolina

Tennessee (6-2-2, 1-1-1 SEC) and South Carolina (7-1-3, 1-0-2 SEC) played to a 1-1 tie Sunday at Eugene E. Stone III Stadium in Columbia, South Carolina.

Kate Runyon scored the first goal of the contest in the 76th minute for Tennessee. The goal is her third in 2023.

South Carolina tied the match, 1-1, after Catherine Barry scored her sixth goal of the season, converting a penalty kick in the 87th minute.

The Gamecocks outshot Tennessee, 19-16. Five of the Lady Vols’ scoring chances were on goal. South Carolina had six shots land on goal.

Abby Reisz started at goalkeeper for the Lady Vols and made one save.

Ally Zazzara entered the match after halftime and recorded four saves for Tennessee.
