Celtics Lab 157: Making sense of royal NBA fans and World Cup play with Josh Coyne

In our first of our series of ‘Peer Review’ special episodes, we get into some Celtics-adjacent phenomena in the world of sport.

For many fans of the Boston Celtics, common British sports phenomena like having the Prince and Princess of Wales in attendance of your favorite team’s game or the political component of supporting one’s (association) football team can be somewhat mystifying. It was a very British-inflected week for Celtics fans with the royal family in attendance for Boston’s first tilt against the Miami Heat and the ongoing World Cup a point of interest for Boston fans and players both.

To that end, the hosts of the CLNS Media “Celtics Lab” podcast thought it our duty to bring on Celtics Lab O.G. and resident British soccer fan and complicated-relationship-with-British-royals-haver Josh Coyne to make sense of it all for the first in a special episode series we’re calling Peer Review.

Host Justin Quinn and Coyne get into some of their (and the Celtics’) mixed emotions on having the royals in attendance last Wednesday, get up to speed on the good and the bad of the World Cup, and wrap things with an all-time Boston soccer squad.

Celtics, NBA Twitter react to Boston’s 134-121 win in front of Prince, Princess of Wales

Perhaps in his own bid to be declared king (of the NBA), Jayson Tatum led the charge against a determined if banged-up Heat squad.

It isn’t very often when you have actualy royalty (as opposed to the King James variety) on the sidelines of an NBA game, but even with the Prince and Princess of Wales in attendance of the Boston Celtics’ 134-121 home win over the Miami Heat on Wednesday night at TD Garden, star Celtics forward Jayson Tatum managed to steal the show.

Perhaps in his own bid to be declared king (of the NBA), the St. Louis native led the charge against a determined if banged-up Heat squad on his way to a 49-point, 11-rebound performance for the ages that gave everyone in the arena (Windsor family included) something to remember.

Let’s take a look at how Celtics and NBA Twitter reacted.

Jayson Tatum scores 49 as Boston beats Miami 134-121

Jayson Tatum put on a show for the visiting Prince and Princess of Wales, scoring 49 points as the Celtics beat the Heat 134-121.

Jayson Tatum erupted for 49 points as he and the Boston Celtics defeated the Miami Heat 134-121 at home Wednesday night, extending the club’s win streak to five games. This was Bostons third consecutive game scoring 130 or more points, the first time doing so since 1968.

Seven Heat players scored in double-figures – Miami certainly made things difficult for Boston. The Celtics, however, finished the game shooting 55.4% from the field as a team. As good as Miami was on offense, Boston was just a bit better. A monster performance from Tatum simply sealed the deal.

With the Prince and Princess of Wales sitting courtside, the Celtics pulled out another big win for their esteemed guests. Here’s what you may have missed from the Celtics’ big win over the Heat.

The royal pair were accompanied by Governor-elect Maura Healey, Boston Mayor Michelle Wu and others as they sat courtside to watch the game.

The Boston Celtics had some unexpected guests of honor in their home tilt against the Miami Heat on Wednesday night, with royalty of the non-figurative sort making a atop at TD Garden to take in a game from the hottest team in the NBA right now.

That would be the Prince and Princess of Wales, William and Kate, in town to promote the Earthshot Prize, awarded to five winners each year for their contributions to environmentalism and launched by William with renowned environmentalist David Attenborough. The royal pair were accompanied by Governor-elect Maura Healey, Boston Mayor Michelle Wu, and others as they sat courtside to watch the game.

Let’s take a look at the photos of the Celtics’ guests of honor for the evening.
