Rutgers women’s basketball loses second straight game to Maryland

Rutgers women’s basketball struggles in loss at Maryland.

For the second time this season, Rutgers women’s basketball struggled against the Maryland Terrapins on Wednesday night. Maryland emerged with an 81-62 win in a Big Ten battle. The Scarlet Knights struggled to play a complete game in their latest conference loss.

While Rutgers played better in the second half, they were outscored 22-4 in the second quarter. That allowed Maryland to build a lead that they would not relinquish.

In this matchup, Maryland was led by Shyanne Sellers, who had another big game. The Aurora, Ohio, native scored a team-high 21 points. She also got help from Allie Kubek, who added 16 points and four rebounds to her resume.

 

Although Wednesday ended in disappointing fashion for Rutgers, there were a few bright spots. That includes Destiny Adams, who scored 15 points. She has provided a spark offensively in her first year at Rutgers, averaging 15.3 points per game. Kassondra Brown and Lisa Thompson also made an impact, scoring 11 points.

As Maryland recorded their 16th win of the season, they dominated close to the basket. The Terrapins scored 38 points in the paint and only allowed 26. They also performed well from three-point range, making 33.3 percent of their shots.

With their 29th game of the season in the books, Rutgers will shift its focus to Michigan State. They are set to take on the Spartans on February 24.

Rutgers women’s basketball records first win since December

Rutgers women’s basketball is celebrating a weekend win at Nebraska.

On Saturday, Rutgers women’s basketball had a reason to celebrate for the first time in over a month. The Scarlet Knights ended their 12-game losing streak with a 71-70 over Nebraska in front of 5,831 fans at Pinnacle Bank Arena.

In a game full of fireworks, Kassondra Brown set the tone offensively for Rutgers with 21 points. She got help from Destiny Adams, who put 11 points on the board. The talented duo were the only two Rutgers players who scored more than 10 points.

Rutgers is now 7-17 on the season.

As Rutgers stunned the Cornhuskers, they were hard to stop from beyond the arc. They shot 46.7 percent from beyond three-point range. Nebraska only shot 26.9 percent and missed 19 of their 26 attempts.

 

Although Nebraska was hoping to start February with a win, there were a few positives for them to take from this game. Alexis Markowski continued to be a scoring machine by adding 13 points to her resume. The Lincoln native has scored at least 10 points in every game this season.

For Rutgers, Saturday’s win is significant for a variety of reasons. It marked their first conference and road win of the season. They also showed they could deal with adversity and matched Nebraska basket for basket.

After a brief two-day vacation, Rutgers will be back in action on Tuesday against Maryland.

Rutgers women’s basketball drops another game

Rutgers women’s basketball continued their slide at Wisconsin.

On Saturday, Rutgers women’s basketball was unable to end their losing streak, which increased to 11 games. Rutgers took on Wisconsin and failed to get key stops in a 73-62 loss.

As Wisconsin secured their second straight win, they were led by Serah Williams. The Brooklyn native added 31 points and 12 rebounds to her resume. She was not the only Badger who made an impact, as Ronnie Porter chipped in 11 points.

There were a few bright spots for the Scarlet Knights, including Kassondra Brown and Mya Petticord. Brown led the way offensively with 13 points while dishing out four assists. Petticord continued to be a scoring machine by adding 15 points to her resume.

 

Although Rutgers took care of the ball in this matchup, they could not recover from a horrible start. The Badgers ended the first quarter up 22-3. After Rutgers made it a close game at the end of the third quarter, the Badgers offense came alive again in the final frame.

With only a few days left in January, Rutgers is now 0-9 in conference play. As a result, they are currently in the basement of the Big Ten standings. On Tuesday, they will have a shot at redemption when they take on Michigan State.

Rutgers women’s basketball: Top five players in 2023

So far this season, Rutgers has gotten contributions from everyone on the roster, but five players in particular have stood out.

With Rutgers 2023 schedule in the books, there are many positives for the Scarlet Knights to look back on. Through 15 games, Rutgers has posted a 6-9 record and been competitive regardless of the opponent. That has created optimism heading into a January full of Big Ten play.

So far this season, Rutgers has gotten contributions from everyone on the roster, but five players in particular have stood out. That list includes Destiny Adams, Kaylene Smikle, Chyna Cornwell, Mya Petticord and Kassondra Brown. That group has made the Scarlet Knights a tough matchup on a daily basis.

 

Additionally, Adams and Smikle have led the way offensively over the last few months. The talented duo are averaging over ten points a game and making a difference on the boards. Cornwell, Petticord and Brown have been reliable depth options and made the most of their playing time.

Rutgers women’s basketball falls to Northwestern

Rutgers women’s basketball loses narrowly to Northwestern.

On Saturday, Rutgers women’s basketball lost its 2023 finale to Northwestern 77-70 at Welsh Ryan Arena. After a dominating first quarter, the Scarlet Knights were unable to build on their momentum and collapsed in the fourth quarter.

In their first matchup of the season against the Wildcats, Rutgers had no answer for Calleigh Warren. The New Jersey native scored 22 points and added two rebounds to her resume. Warren also had some help in the form of Melanie Daley, who put 20 points on the board.

For Rutgers, Lisa Thompson led the way offensively with 17 points. Kassondra Brown also had a big night, scoring 17 points. It was the fifth straight game in which the Abington native scored double digits.

 

Additionally, Rutgers was unable to take care of the basketball in their third straight loss. The Scarlet Knights committed 19 turnovers, which resulted in 24 points. They also made it hard to gain momentum by committing 19 fouls.

While Saturday did not go as planned for Rutgers, they nearly recorded their seventh win of the season. However, they were unable to contain Northwestern’s offense in the fourth quarter, in which they scored 21 points and held Rutgers to eight.

After a few days off, Rutgers will return to action on Tuesday against Purdue. Their matchup with the Boilermakers will provide a perfect opportunity for Rutgers to climb in the Big Ten standings.
