Rutgers women’s basketball looks to get back on track against Minnesota

Rutgers women’s basketball is looking to get back on track this week.

After a promising start to February, Rutgers women’s basketball will be looking to get back in the win column on Tuesday against Minnesota. The Scarlet Knights have lost two straight and have not scored more than 59 points in that span.

As Rutgers tries to get back on track, they will have their hands full with a talented Golden Gophers team. So far this season, Mara Braun has led the way offensively for Minnesota, averaging 16.3 points per game. Mallory Meyer has also made her presence felt, averaging 8.2 rebounds per game.

For Rutgers to pull off an upset, they will need big games from their talented duo of Destiny Adams and Chyna Cornwell. So far this month, Adams has scored at least 10 points in every game, including 16 against Michigan on Saturday. Cornwell has set the tone on the boards, averaging 7.6 rebounds per game.

In their latest loss, Rutgers dug themselves into an early hole. They only scored 16 points in the first half against Michigan and were dominated in the paint. That made it hard for the Scarlet Knights to mount a comeback. A similar start against Minnesota would be fatal.

While Rutgers will be the underdogs in this matchup, they will have the home-court advantage. That could be an advantage against a Minnesota team that has struggled In conference play.

Caitlin Clark once again showed why she is an elite player in performance at Rutgers

Rutgers women’s basketball lost to Iowa and Caitlin Clark on Friday night.

In the Iowa Hawkeyes’ 103-69 win over Rutgers on Friday night, Caitlin Clark continued to show why she is one of the best players in women’s college basketball.

The Des Moines native scored 29 points and added 10 rebounds to her resume. Due to her play, the Hawkeyes were able to build a big lead that Rutgers could not overcome. In the first half, the Hawkeyes outscored Rutgers 55-30. Clark also got some help from Kate Martin, who scored 17 points.

While Rutgers could not stop Iowa’s offense, there were still a few bright spots. For the third straight game, Mya Petticord scored at least 12 points. Chyna Cornwell also made an impact with 12 points of her own. On a night when Rutgers was without their leading scorer, Kaylene Smikle, others stepped up.

Although the Hawkeyes were favored coming into this game, they took advantage of Rutgers mistakes. Iowa scored 18 points off turnovers and recorded 58 points in the paint. Their ability to dominate the boards made it hard for Rutgers to mount a comeback.

After Friday’s loss, the Scarlet Knights are 0-4 in conference play this season, the worst record in the Big Ten. They will look to get back on track against Ohio State next Wednesday.

Chyna Cornwell led the way offensively for Rutgers with a team-high 16 points. She got some help in the form of Kaylene Smikle, who scored 13, and Destiny Adams, who added 14 points to her resume. While the Rutgers trio was hard to stop, they also took advantage of Lafayette’s mistakes.

The Leopards turned the ball over 19 times and committed 16 fouls. For the second straight game, Rutgers’s defense proved problematic and forced at least 15 turnovers. That has made it hard for opponents to gain any momentum.

Rutgers built an early lead in this one, outscoring Lafayette 33-17 in the first half. The Leopards struggled to get points on the board, which allowed Rutgers to build a lead they would relinquish.

After securing their second straight win, Rutgers focus will shift to their matchup against La Salle in two weeks. La Salle has had an up-and-down season so far and will be a good challenge for the Scarlet Knights.

While Rutgers will get a two-week break to rest up, they have played much better basketball lately after losing three straight games.

Rutgers women’s basketball forward Chyna Cornwell makes Big Ten’s top rebounders list

Meghan McKeown ranks Chyna Cornwell as one of the top returning rebounds in the Big Ten.

There is some buzz around Chyna Cornwell this offseason and the next step she can take as part of the Rutgers women’s basketball team. The buzz is certainly real for the Rutgers senior forward around the Big Ten.

Cornwell took a big step last season under head coach Coquese Washington, averaging 9.5 points per game as a junior (her previous season saw Cornwell average 2.2 points per game). Playing an expanded role, Cornwell also averaged an impressive 8.6 rebounds per game.

She is a core piece of what should be a solid starting five for Washington, who is set for her second season with the program.

Big Ten basketball analyst Meghan McKeown, a former Northwestern guard, believes that Cornwell is one of the top returning rebounders in the Big Ten.

“She’s one of the hardest players on the floor to box out,” McKeown said.

McKeown thinks that Rutgers has had a good offseason, adding several key pieces in the transfer portal. McKeown is bullish on the direction of Rutgers under Washington and the rebuilding of the program.
