MBB Recap: Shorthanded Ducks outlast Kent State

Oregon finished the non-conference season strong with an 84-70 win over Kent State.

In a game where every player’s mind could have been somewhere else, the Oregon Ducks men’s basketball team focused and defeated Kent State 84-70.

This was the last non-conference contest of the season and right before everyone went home for the holidays. Oregon finished the non-league portion of the schedule 8-3 as it will soon prepare for the grind that is the Pac-12.

Jermaine Couisnard finished with a double-double of 27 points and 10 rebounds and Jackson Shelstad added 15 points and five assists.

Although the Ducks had a goose egg for three-pointers in the second half, they were able to compensate by going to the free-throw line and making 19-of-25 from the stripe.

Kent State stayed in the game with 11 threes, but it wasn’t nearly enough.

MBB Recap: Jackson Shelstad shines in Oregon blowout

My instant reactions to Oregon’s men’s basketball win over California Baptist University.

The Oregon Ducks men’s basketball team won their third straight game on Tuesday night against the California Baptist Lancers to move to 7-2 on the season. The Lancers kept the score close in the first half and were down by four going into the break. But, the Ducks were true to their identity as a second-half team and out-scored CBU 40-24 in the second half.

This was freshman point guard Jackson Shelstad’s fifth career game, and already, he has become a star. Shelstad finished Tuesday’s game with 17 points and 8 assists, both of which are personal bests in his young career.

Below, are the rest of my instant reactions to Oregon’s seventh win of the season.

Two transfer targets spurn Auburn for Oregon

The Tigers missed out on Devan Cambridge and Kario Oquendo.

The Auburn Tigers were able to land one of their top transfer targets in Chaney Johnson on Friday but two others spurned them for the West Coast.

[autotag]Devan Cambridge[/autotag] and [autotag]Kario Oquendo[/autotag] both announced that they would be transferring to Oregon Friday on social media.

Cambridge spent 2019-22 on the Plains before transferring to Arizona State last season to play with his brother. The 6-foot-6 guard averaged 9.8 points and 5.4 rebounds per game for the Sun Devils. He then re-entered the transfer portal and was expected to take a visit to Auburn prior to his commitment.

Oquendo, a former Georgia Bulldog, averaged 12.7 points and 2.6 rebounds per game last season. He included Auburn in his top four on April 6 along with Oregon, Utah, and Nebraska.

The 6-foot-4 guard scored 52 points in three games against Auburn.

Auburn is still in the market for a 3 guard after landing Johnson and one of their top targets is former five-star [autotag]Matthew Cleveland[/autotag], who quickly emerged as one of the top players in the portal after spending two seasons at FSU. He averaged a team-high 13.8 points and 7.4 rebounds last season.

Devan Cambridge announces he has committed to Oregon

Former Arizona State guard Devan Cambridge has announced he will be transferring to Oregon to finish out his college career.

Former Arizona State Sun Devils basketball player Devan Cambridge might have to pack a coat or two.

The 6-foot-6 guard from Nashville is going from Tempe, Ariz. to Eugene as he has announced he will be transferring to Oregon to play his final college season.

Cambridge, who played with his brother Desmond at ASU, averaged 10 points a game for the Sun Devils last year. The versatile and athletic player also averaged 5.4 rebounds.

For his career, Cambridge scored seven points and four rebounds a game. He played his first three seasons at Auburn, but his best season came at Arizona State.

This news comes on the heels of learning Georgia guard Kario Oquendo is also transferring into Dana Altman’s program.

Former Georgia guard Kario Oquendo commits to Oregon Ducks

Dana Altman’s got a new Duck. Former Georgia Bulldogs’ guard Kario Oquendo is transferring to Oregon.

Dana Altman and the Oregon Ducks are once again using the transfer portal to their advantage, bringing in some talented players looking for a new home and bolstering their roster heading into the new season.

On Friday, it was announced that former Georgia Bulldogs guard Kario Oquendo committed to the Ducks after taking an official visit to Eugene last weekend.

The 6-foot-4 guard entered the portal soon after it opened in mid-March after having spent the past two seasons at Georgia, starting 59 games, after one year in the JUCO ranks where he played a season at Florida Southwestern State, the same school that new Oregon guard Jadrian Tracey came from.

Oquendo led Georgia in scoring during the 2021 season, and was the No. 2 leading scorer in 2023, averaging 12.7 PPG. He also consideredAuburn, Utah, and Nebraska.

The Ducks are in the running to land former Georgia Bulldog Kario Oquendo.

The transfer portal continues to be a busy place for Dana Altman and the Oregon Ducks. After seeing Kel’el Ware and Lök Wur announce that they would be leaving the team earlier this offseason, the Ducks are now in a position where they might land a talented player and bring him to Eugene.

Former Georgia Bulldogs Kario Oquendo has been a notable name in the portal, and he announced this week that going forward, he is going to focus on just a few schools who are recruiting him, mentioning the Ducks as one of them.

Kario Oquendo’s Transfer Portal Profile

Auburn is a finalist for Georgia transfer Kario Oquendo

The Tigers are in heavy pursuit of the veteran guard.

Auburn is once again trying to land a shooting guard from one of their top rivals.

Georgia transfer [autotag]Kario Oquendo[/autotag] included the Tigers as one of his four finalists on Thursday. He also included Utah, Oregon, and Nebraska.

The 6-foot-4 guard averaged 14 points and 3.5 rebounds per game in two seasons as a Bulldog. He spent one season at Florida SouthWestern prior to his time at Georgia.

He played against Auburn three times as a Bulldog and scored a combined 52 points, finishing in double figures in each contest.

Following the departures of [autotag]Wendell Green Jr.[/autotag] and [autotag]Chance Westry[/autotag], Auburn has heavily pursued veteran guards who can score in the transfer portal. Other targets are Denver Jones (FIU) and Damian Dunn (Temple).

Georgia basketball’s Kario Oquendo makes NBA draft decision

Georgia basketball star Kario Oquendo has entered the transfer portal and NBA draft

Georgia basketball standout Kario Oquendo has declared for the 2023 NBA draft. Oquendo is also entering his name into the NCAA transfer portal. Oquendo is still able withdraw from the draft and return to college.

Oquendo was the team’s leading scorer in 2021-2022 (15.2 points per game). He entered the transfer portal last offseason, but ultimately elected to return to Athens.

Kario Oquendo averaged 12.7 points and 2.6 rebounds per game in 2022-2023. Oquendo connected on just 26.7% of his three-point attempts.

The junior guard transferred to Georgia from Florida SouthWestern where he was named first-team All-Southern Conference in 2020. One of Kario Oquendo’s former Florida SouthWestern teammates, Terry Roberts, followed him to Georgia. Roberts also elected to enter the NBA draft.

Oquendo’s decision to return to Athens helped Georgia have a better season in 2022-2023. Georgia improved from six wins to 16 wins in the first season under head coach Mike White.

The 6-foot-4, 220-pound guard has played in 60 games over the last two seasons for Georgia basketball.

Oquendo announced his plans for the NBA draft and his intention to enter the transfer portal via Twitter:

UGA basketball falls to 4-7 in SEC play with loss to Ole Miss

Georgia basketball has lost six of its last seven games after a 3-1 SEC start

The Georgia Bulldogs lost 78-74 to the Ole Miss Rebels at home on Feb. 7. Georgia is now 4-7 in SEC conference play and 14-10 overall. Ole Miss moves to 2-9 in SEC play and 10-14 overall.

Head coach Mike White and the Bulldogs have dropped six of their last seven games after opening SEC play 3-1. Overall, Georgia basketball has been much more competitive this season, but it is clear that the Bulldogs need to improve if they want to be a future contender in the SEC.

Georgia limited turnovers (10) against Ole Miss. The Bulldogs did not shot three-pointers well and struggled from the free throw line to an extent.

Former Georgia guard Tye Fagan suited up for Ole Miss. Amazingly, Fagan,  who last played at Georgia during the 2020-2021 season, did not face any of his former teammates. That shows the amount of roster turnover the Dawgs have had recently.

Georgia basketball hosts Kentucky on Saturday, Feb. 11 at noon. Here’s a look at some key stats and photos from Georgia’s defeat to Ole Miss:

UGA basketball’s Kario Oquendo withdraws from transfer portal

Georgia basketball star Kario Oquendo, the team’s leading scorer last season, has withdrawn his name from the transfer portal

Georgia basketball star Kario Oquendo, the team’s leading scorer in 2021-2022 (15.2 ppg), has withdrawn his name from the transfer portal. Oquendo’s pending return is huge for first-year head coach Mike White, who is trying to fill out the Bulldogs’ roster.

The sophomore guard transferred to Georgia from Florida SouthWestern where he was named first-team All-Southern Conference in 2020. Oquendo shot 40.3% on three pointers during the 2020-2021 season with Florida SouthWestern, so he could outperform his 27.2% three-point shooting in 2021-2022.

Oquendo played well under Tom Crean, but that didn’t translate into wins as Georgia finished last in the SEC and the Bulldogs finished 6-26. His return gives the Dawgs something to build with. Oquendo started 31 games for Georgia last year.

Georgia’s roster will look very different in 2022-2023, but a few pieces appear to be in place. Jailyn Ingram is looking to have an extra season of eligibility from the NCAA after suffering a season-ending injury early last season.  Forward Jabri Abdur-Rahim, who averaged 18.9 minutes per game, and forward Braelin Bridges, who started all 32 games last season, are both returning.

Mike White has already added Longwood transfer Justin Hill and is looking to add more talent.

Numerous Georgia Bulldogs remain in the transfer portal: Josh Taylor, Tyrone Baker, Jaxon Etter, Jonathan Ned, Tyron McMillan, Christian Wright, Cam McDowell, Noah Baumann and Dalen Ridgnal.
