Karine Silva makes quick turnaround at UFC 292, meets Maryna Moroz

Rising UFC women’s flyweight Karine Silva has booked her next assignment within a week of her last fight.

Rising UFC women’s flyweight [autotag]Karine Silva[/autotag] has booked her next assignment.

Silva (16-4 MMA, 2-0 UFC) meets [autotag]Maryna Moroz[/autotag] (11-4 MMA, 6-4 UFC) at UFC 292 on Aug. 19 from TD Garden in Boston. A person with knowledge of the situation confirmed the booking to MMA Junkie on Friday after an initial report by MMA Fighting.

Brazil’s Silva is coming off a knee-popping submission of Ketlen Souza in this past Saturday’s UFC on ESPN 45 event at the UFC Apex. The Dana White’s Contender Series alum has finished all 16 of her professional wins.

Moroz saw her three-fight winning streak snapped by former title challenger Jennifer Maia this past November at UFC Fight Night 215. Prior to that, the 31-year-old scored wins over Sabina Mazo, Mayra Bueno Silva, and a Performance of the Night submission of Mariya Agapova.

With the addition, the current UFC 292 lineup includes:

  • Aljamain Sterling vs. Sean O’Malley – for bantamweight title
  • Zhang Weili vs. Amanda Lemos – for women’s strawweight title
  • Brad Tavares vs. Chris Weidman
  • Mario Bautista vs. Cody Garbrandt
  • Gerald Meerschaert vs. Andre Petroski
  • Gregory Rodrigues vs. Denis Tiuliulin
  • Maryna Moroz vs. Karine Silva

Karine Silva in no rush to get fast tracked but wants opponent that gets her closer to UFC title goal

Karine Silva wants to make sure she takes the necessary steps before reaching UFC title contention.

LAS VEGAS – [autotag]Karine Silva[/autotag] wants to make sure she takes the necessary steps before reaching title contention.

Boasting a 100 percent finish rate, Silva (16-4 MMA, 2-0 UFC) continued her tear through the flyweight division when she scored a knee-popping submission of Ketlen Souza in this past Saturday’s UFC on ESPN 45 event at the UFC Apex.

Silva has aspirations of becoming UFC champion but doesn’t have a name in mind for her next fight. The Brazilian just wants an opponent that moves her forward in the rankings.

“Obviously I don’t see a line coming up to fight me,” Silva told MMA Junkie and other reporters through an interpreter. “I want to fight as soon as possible. As I said before, this was a step that I took. The direction of what I want to achieve is to be a champion.

“Meaning the opponent, whoever it is, the opponent that’s put in front of me, I want somebody that gets me closer to that goal. So, whoever the UFC wants to put in front of me, that’s fine. I’m ready to fight in August. If you’re ready, I’m ready. Again, whoever lines up, I’ll do it.”

With her exciting fight-finishing style, it wouldn’t be a surprise if Silva was pushed by the UFC despite only having two fights in the octagon. Silva would accept a big step up in competition but won’t ask for it.

“If they put a top-15 in front of me, I’ll face her, yes,” Silva said. “But I don’t want to get ahead of myself because, as I said, I want to ensure that every step of the way here is actually pretty on the ground and very strong. You need to keep yourself at bay and in order to do that, you need to take things one step at a time.”

UFC on ESPN 45 video: Karine Silva pops Ketlen Souza’s knee with first-round submission

Karine Silva pulled off a slick first-round submission that spoiled the debut of Ketlen Souza on the main card of UFC on ESPN 45.

[autotag]Karine Silva[/autotag] spoiled the UFC debut of [autotag]Ketlen Souza[/autotag] in perhaps more ways than one.

The women’s flyweight matchup served as the second bout on the main card of UFC on ESPN 45 at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. The fight aired live on ESPN and streamed on ESPN+, and it was one that Silva ensured ended early in a violent fashion.

After dragging Souza to the mat with a takedown, Silva initially threatened a guillotine submission from the top. Souza regained full guard, but after posturing up and landing a couple of punches, Silva dropped down for a kneebar. She immediately cranked on the hold, resulting in Souza’s knee popping. Souza was clearly in pain and quickly tapped out.

Check out video of the finish below (via Twitter):

With the win, Silva continued her finishing ways while extending her current winning streak to seven. The stretch has been an impressive one filled with early stoppages, including six first-round finishes, and one second-round victory.

Souza’s debut couldn’t have gone much worse. She earned her shot in the UFC after racking up a five-fight win streak, which included two wins under the Invicta banner.

Souza was helped out of the cage with her team, as she was unable to put her full weight on her injured leg.
