Broncos DB Kareem Jackson named AFC Defensive Player of the Week

Broncos safety Kareem Jackson has been named the AFC Defensive Player of the Week by NFL.com.

Denver Broncos safety Kareem Jackson has been named the AFC Defensive Player of the Week, the NFL announced Wednesday. Jackson had a standout performance in Denver’s 38-24 win over the Houston Texans on Sunday.

Facing the team he spent the first nine years of his career with, Jackson totaled 11 tackles, one interception and three pass breakouts. He also returned a fumble 70 yards for a touchdown. He became the first defender with at least 10 tackles, a fumble returned for a score and an interception in the same game since former Chicago Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher in 2011.

On the year, Jackson has totaled 69 tackles, eight pass breakups, two interceptions and one forced fumble. His 11 tackles on Sunday tied a career high.

This marks the first time a Broncos defender has taken home a conference award since outside linebacker Von Miller won in Week 11 last season. Jackson is the 34th Denver defender to take home the award since 1984.

Bill O’Brien says Texans didn’t give up on Kareem Jackson’s fumble returned for a touchdown

Houston Texans coach Bill O’Brien says his team didn’t quit on Denver Broncos DB Kareem Jackson’s touchdown return.

One of the strangest plays from the Houston Texans 38-24 loss to the Denver Broncos Sunday was defensive back Kareem Jackson returning a fumble recovery 70 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter.

Texans coach Bill O’Brien says his team didn’t give up on the play, instead citing it was a bizarre play.

“That was weird play,” O’Brien told reporters Monday. “The ball came out, the back judge said he was down, the rest of the officials let the play go, somebody heard a whistle, the ball was scooped up by one of their guys.”

On a first-and-10 from the Broncos’ 37-yard line with 3:52 to go in the quarter, receiver Keke Coutee fumbled after an 8-yard catch when linebacker Jeremiah Attachou stripped the ball on Coutee’s way to the ground.

Attachou picked up the loose ball and attempted a return, but was held up by tight end Jordan Akins.

“Akins had him in the grasp, and then he handed the ball to Kareem and Kareem ran it back for a touchdown,” said O’Brien. “It was just a strange play.”

As proof of the Texans’ not giving up on the play, but simply caught off guard by the back judge saying Coutee was down and thinking there was a whistle, left tackle Laremy Tunsil sprinted for Jackson.

Said O’Brien: “I don’t think anybody — I mean, Laremy Tunsil, he chased the guy down the field to try to catch up with him. Did you see that? That was unbelievable. He didn’t catch him, but he was gaining. So, I don’t think we gave up on the play.

“I just think it was a strange play.”

The Texans are hopeful the strange plays will go their way for the rest of the season as they commence their season series with the Tennessee Titans in Week 15 at Nissan Stadium.

3 biggest winners from Broncos’ 38-24 win over Texans

The Broncos never looked back after jumping out to an early lead against the Texans. Here are three standout performers from the win.

It’s too bad that the Denver Broncos are playing this well with the postseason essentially out of reach. Of course, that’s one way to look at it. The other, more positive way to look at it, would be that the future includes some potentially great things.

Normally, we would talk about winners and losers for the Broncos after their game, but after this game, it’s pretty tough to find any “losers.” After all, the Broncos were up 38-3 at one point in this game against a team fresh off of a big win over the New England Patriots.

Instead, we’ll focus on the three big stars of the game, kind of like they do in the National Hockey League. There were plenty of players to choose from in this one.

First star: Drew Lock

This is the obvious place to start. Lock was phenomenal in his second career start, completing 22-of-27 passes and throwing for 309 yards and three touchdowns. To say he has Broncos Country excited would be a small understatement.

Would you believe that until Sunday, no rookie quarterback ever threw for 300 yards and three touchdowns in their first career road start? Lock made NFL history by doing just that.

Broncos DB Kareem Jackson had huge game vs. Texans, his former team

Broncos safety Kareem Jackson had a big game against the Texans, his former team.

Broncos safety Kareem Jackson entered the NFL as a first-round pick out of Alabama with the Texans in 2010 and he spent the first nine years of his career in Houston. Jackson became a free agent in March and the Texans opted not to re-sign him so he signed a three-year deal with Denver.

On Sunday, Jackson faced the Texans for the first time since they parted ways with him. The 31-year-old defensive back had one of the best games of his career, totaling 11 tackles and one interception. He also broke up three passes and returned a fumble for a touchdown.

“He had a lot of energy, made a lot of plays,” Houston quarterback Deshaun Watson said of Jackson after the game. “He was jacked up. This is his home away from home pretty much, and he was excited to come back. So he did a good job today.”

Jackson’s touchdown happened in the first quarter of a 38-24 win when defensive lineman Jeremiah Attaochu recovered a fumble. Jackson knew Attaochu was about to be tackled so he asked his teammate to lateral the ball to him.

“I saw somebody grab him so I just thought he was tackled,” Jackson said. “I could kind of see everybody relaxing. It’s one of those plays they didn’t know if it was an incomplete pass or fumble.

“So one of the things we harp on we just play through the whistle. I never heard the whistle. It’s great awareness by Jerry to recover the ball, and I was just right there. He heard me. I was able to score it.”

That heads up thinking from Jackson led to a score that gave Denver momentum and helped the team build a 31-3 halftime lead. After the win, coach Vic Fangio had only positive things to say about Jackson’s performance.

“He had the interception, the fumble return for the touchdown, had a bunch of PBUs, was active in the tackling,” Fangio said. “But also had a tone-setting big hit, which got us off the field.

“It was on a third-down play, would have been a first down. So all in all, I think you could say he had a hell of a game.”

Twitter recap of Broncos’ 38-24 win over Texans

Quarterback Drew Lock had a breakout game by throwing for 309 yards and three TDs in the Denver Broncos’ win 38-24 over the Houston Texans.

Broncos rookie quarterback Drew Lock had a breakout game by throwing for 309 yards and three touchdowns in the team’s 38-24 over the Texans on Sunday. Safety Kareem Jackson also had a big game, returning a fumble 70 yards for a touchdown and recording an interception against his former team.

Here is a Twitter recap of the game:

Lock threw his first touchdown to tight end Noah Fant.

Linebacker Jeremiah Attaochu recovered a fumble and handed the ball to Jackson, who made a 70 yard run for a defensive touchdown.

Lock threw another touchdown to tight end Jeff Heuerman.

Lock threw his third touchdown pass to running back Royce Freeman.

Defensive tackle Shelby Harris was key in fortifying the Broncos’ defensive line.

The Broncos had a rushing touchdown by running back Phillip Lindsay.

Kareem Jackson says Broncos played through the whistle on Texans WR Keke Coutee’s fumble

Denver Broncos defensive back Kareem Jackson says he played through the whistle on the fumble by Houston Texans receiver Keke Coutee.

Arguably the turning point of the Houston Texans’ 38-24 loss to the Denver Broncos Sunday at NRG Stadium was defensive back Kareem Jackson’s fumble return for a touchdown.

On first-and-10 from the Denver 37 down 7-0 with 3:52 to go in the first quarter, quarterback Deshaun Watson completed an eight yards pass to receiver Keke Coutee. As he was going to the ground, linebacker Jeremiah Attachou stripped the ball, recovered it, and started taking off.

As Attachou was bottled up by Texans offensive players, Jackson stepped in to continue the fumble return.

“I saw somebody grab him so I just thought he was tackled,” Jackson told reporters. “I could kind of see everybody relaxing. It’s one of those plays they didn’t know if it was an incomplete pass or fumble. So one of the things we harp on we just play through the whistle. I never heard the whistle.”

Attachou was able to hear Jackson calling for the ball, and the 26-year-old handed the ball backward to Jackson, who scored his first defensive touchdown since 2016 when he was still with the Texans.

“It’s great awareness by Jerry to recover the ball, and I was just right there. He heard me,” said Jackson. “I was able to score it.”

The effort was part of a big retribution performance for Jackson, who was not retained by the Texans after his contract ran out in the offseason. The former 2010 first-round pick from Alabama finished with 11 tackles, a tackle for loss, an interception, and three pass breakups along with his touchdown return.

Texans QB Deshaun Watson says Broncos DB Kareem Jackson played with a lot of energy

Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson says Denver Broncos defensive back and ex-teammate Kareem Jackson played with tremendous energy in Week 14.

Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson saw a different force from his former teammate, Kareem Jackson, when he faced the Denver Broncos Sunday at NRG Stadium.

According to the Pro Bowler, the 31-year-old Jackson played with an abundance of energy as his new team came away with the 38-24 victory over the club that drafted him in Round 1 of the 2010 NFL draft.

“He had a lot of energy, made a lot of plays,” Watson told reporters. “He was jacked up. This is his home away from home pretty much and he was excited to come back. So, he did a good job today.”

The former Texan collected 11 tackles, a tackle for loss, three pass breakups, an interception, and returned a lateral on a fumble 70 yards for a touchdown. Jackson also had an uncanny instinct to know where Watson was going with the football as he stopped tight end Darren Fells for no gain on a third-and-1 reception and also came away with another interception when Watson threw his hot route.

With Jackson and his statement game against his former team in the past, the Texans will have to get over it as they have a Week 15 showdown with the Tennessee Titans at Nissan Stadium next Sunday.
