Kansas vs Iowa State Game Preview

Why Kansas Will Win

Now the Jayhawks are back on track.

After a three game losing streak following the 62-60 win over Iowa State, they were able to roll Kentucky and Kansas State in impressive performances that made it look like they’re ready to make a run.

What’s the difference? The turnovers have slowed, the threes have been there, and the team is passing the ball around better – they’re playing like they’re a bit more focused and sharper.

On the flip side, Iowa State is coming off of two straight losses when it couldn’t do much of anything on the free throw line, turned it over 35 times in the two games, and …

Why Iowa State Will Win

Now it’s back home.

2-5 away from Ames, this is a night-and-day different team at home winning 11 out of 11.

What’s the difference? There are a whole lot more takeaways and mistakes forced, coming up with 20 or more in five of the 11 home wins and more than 15 just twice – with 19 in those two – away from the Hilton.

Kansas doesn’t have a huge turnover problem, there are enough to matter.  The Cyclones were able to battle and claw in the two point loss the first time around with just 12 takeaways. They’ll come up with more in this.

What’s Going To Happen

Can the home court advantage really mean that much here?

Yup.

Iowa State has to come up with a huge day on the defensive glass – that’s a problem for this bunch – but the defense should be able to generate just enough steals to make a difference if …

Free throws.

Iowa State is 11-0 when hitting better than 60% from the line. It’ll do that at home.

Kansas vs Iowa State Game Preview

Why Iowa State Will Win

It’s been fun, and we’ve all had a good time, but Kansas is overdue to face a run defense.

West Virginia and Houston are fine, and Duke hasn’t been bad, but the Jayhawk attack hasn’t faced anything like the Big 12’s best run defense.

Iowa State is seventh in the nation against the run allowing just 2.7 yards per carry and not getting hit with any big plays.

Kansas can do more than run the ball – QB Jalon Daniels has been brilliant so far at limiting mistakes and keeping everything moving – but it all starts by being able to grind a bit.

And then there’s the other side. The Kansas O has been wonderful. The D … not so much. You can throw on this bunch, Hunter Dekkers and the Cyclone passing game should be good for at least 250 yards and closer to 300, but …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 4

Why Kansas Will Win

Kansas is dominating offensively on third downs.

The D isn’t up to snuff yet. It’s going to give up yards, and it’s going to give up plenty of points. However, it catches a break because the offense is always moving.

It’s converting 67% of its third down chances – second in the nation behind Minnesota – and that’s partly due to the great offensive line play and the ability of Daniels to make things happen under pressure.

The defense isn’t going to get hit with too many big plays. Dekkers and Iowa State dink and dunk and don’t take too many chances, but offense turned it over a bit too much for its style with two key picks in the loss to Baylor and three turnovers in the fight with Iowa.

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

The defense. Iowa State will bring it, and it’s going to be enough to slow down this runaway Jayhawk train.

Daniels will throw for over 200 yards and the KU passing game will do enough to do what it wants offensively – to a point.

Iowa State will have the ball for over 35 minutes, the defense will hold up down the stretch, and in a tough, competitive game, the Cyclones will get out of Lawrence with a strong win.

Kansas vs Iowa State Game Preview

Why Kansas Will Win

The Jayhawks should be a whole lot more focused and sharp after getting run out of the gym in the stunning home loss to Kentucky.

And only beating Iowa State 62-61 a few weeks ago should get everyone’s attention, too.

It was a grind against the Cyclones the first time around, but Kansas was able to get to the line and it should be able to again.

It was a bit of an aberration – Iowa State fouls a whole lot – close to 19 times per game – and the Jayhawks weren’t able to do even more to force hacks.

Force more than the 15 fouls there were in the first meeting and there won’t be a problem.

NFL Mock Draft: Latest 1st round mock

Why Iowa State Will Win

The Kansas defense hasn’t been consistent enough or food enough.

It’s okay, but it’s not the rock it normally is. No, Iowa State isn’t going to come out and put 85 on the board, but it needs to play the game at its tempo and take advantage of its chances.

It was able to hit 41% from the field in the first meeting, but it couldn’t come up with enough threes at the right time.

Keep this in the 60s again, don’t get bogged down when the Jayhawks are scoring on the inside, keep the ball moving. Of course all teams end up doing well when there are lots of assists, but Iowa State is 10-0 when it comes up with 15 or more.

The problem, though, is …

What’s Going To Happen

Kansas is 17-1 when the other team doesn’t get come up with more than 16 assists.

Kentucky came up with 19. Iowa State won’t do that.

The Cyclones should be able to keep this from being a runaway disaster, but it won’t have enough offense in the last ten minutes to overcome the Jayhawk free throws.

Kansas (14-7) vs Iowa State (2-13) Game Preview

Why Kansas Will Win

Iowa State is having problems.

It has yet to win a Big 12 game, and while it’s been close once in a while, there hasn’t been any luck.

The offense just isn’t good enough – it hasn’t hit 40% from the field in five of the last six games – and there’s no rebounding whatsoever.

And that includes the meeting two days ago in Lawrence.

Kansas won 97-64 when the Cyclones couldn’t make much of anything from outside and was outrebounded 41-27. This might not be the dominant Jayhawk team of previous seasons, but it’s still amazing on the boards and makes a lot of threes because it shoots a ton of them. So …

Why Iowa State Will Win

What does Iowa State do well?

It has to be able to slow things down as much as possible, and it has to try getting to the basket and force fouls. It’s great on the free throw line, but the defense just can’t stop anything from the field on a regular basis.

It came close to getting by West Virginia a few weeks ago, and why? It hit its shots – 44% is massive for this team – because it moved the ball around as well as it had all season long.

What’s Going To Happen

It might not be 97-64 bad, but it’ll be another dominant performance by the Jayhawks after they get past a rough first ten minutes. The Cyclones will start missing their shots, KU will get the rebounds, and then it’ll get ugly again.

Kansas (0-5) vs Iowa State (3-2) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college football, go to BetMGM

Why Kansas Will Win

It’s all about improving and finding parts to build around, and freshman quarterback Jalon Daniels appears to be someone who can be one key guy going forward.

He wasn’t phenomenal against Kansas State – he has yet to throw a touchdown pass this season – but he ran for two scores.

Kansas isn’t doing a whole lot of things right, but its not getting penalized, it’s generating a little bit of pressure behind the line, and the pass defense hasn’t been totally miserable. However …

Why Iowa State Will Win

The Jayhawk offense simply can’t score. The offensive line isn’t doing enough to give everyone time to work, there aren’t any long drives to take control of games, and as promising as Daniels is, there’s nothing big happening down the field yet.

Iowa State has been rocky, but the offensive line has been outstanding in pass protection and the O isn’t making enough big mistakes to give the Jayhawks easy chances.

KU has yet to come up with more than 370 yards of total offense and failed to get to 200 in two of the previous three games. A few early Cyclone scores end this.

What’s Going To Happen

Five wins in a row and nine in the last ten years. Iowa State doesn’t historically own a whole lot of series, but there haven’t been any problem against Kansas. It’s not going to change now.

It’ll take a total Cyclone meltdown for this to be anything but an easy double-digit win. Coming off a loss to Oklahoma State, Iowa State will be focused.

Kansas (22-3) vs. Iowa State (11-14) Game Preview

If want in on this week’s games, sign up with BetMGM

Why Iowa State Will Win

It’s been a rough year – and the first time around wasn’t pretty at home in a 79-53 loss to the Jayhawks – but this is still a dangerous team at forcing takeaways and coming up with blocks for stops.

Can the Cyclones hold down the KU outside game? They’re not great at stopping teams from three, but that’s not a problem against a Jayhawk offense that doesn’t do much to bomb away.

The D has to come up with easy points off the mistakes, and Kansas has to be a bit off, but …

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

Why Kansas Will Win

Kansas isn’t that bad from the outside, and Iowa State really can’t stop anyone from hitting threes.

Iowa State is great at moving the ball around, but Kansas is too good at closing out on the three, it’s better on the inside, and it’s not going to allow enough second chance points to matter.

How did the Jayhawks win the first time around? They hit everything from three – connecting on more than 50% from the outside – stuffed the Iowa State shooters, and got out to a massive lead and cruised from there.

What’s Going To Happen

Kansas is on a roll, playing stronger and sharper as the ten-game winning streak has gone on. Iowa State will be better in the first half than it was in the first game, but it won’t be nearly enough as the offense goes cold in the second half.
