Kam Chancellor to raise the 12th Man Flag in Week 1

Kam Chancellor to raise the 12th Man Flag in Week 1

One of the best pre-game traditions in the NFL is the raising of the iconic 12th Man Flag in the south end zone at Lumen Field. For every Seattle Seahawks home game, a Seattle legend gets the honors. Often times it’s a prominent celebrity or beloved player – former or active on another team. For Week 1, it’s about as special as it gets for who gets the honors.

The Seahawks are taking on the Broncos, their opponent from the only Super Bowl title in franchise history. So it is only natural the one to raise the 12 Flag would be none other than Bam Bam himself, Kam Chancellor.

In Super Bowl XLVIII, the famed Legion of Boom outright humiliated Peyton Manning and his dynamic Denver offense. The 43-8 margin of victory remains one of the most lopsided Super Bowls in history. Although linebacker Malcolm Smith took home MVP honors, there are those who still feel to this day safety Kam Chancellor had as strong of a case to be MVP himself, or at least share the award with Smith.

Chancellor set the tone right from the get-go, smashing wide receiver Demaryius Thomas to prevent the first down from being converted. It was the moment it became clear to the world the Broncos were woefully unprepared for Seattle’s physicality. Chancellor later intercepted Manning on third down, which eventually led to the first Seahawks points of the night.

When it was all said and done, Chancellor finished the Super Bowl with 10 total tackles – tied with Smith and Bobby Wagner to lead the team.

Chancellor will always be one of the most beloved Seahawks to ever take the field. You can expect a deafening roar from the 12’s in attendance when Chancellor appears this afternoon.

Panthers great Cam Newton recalls his intense pre-game staredowns

Panthers great Cam Newton spoke about the meaning behind his iconic picture in Seattle.

Carolina Panthers great Cam Newton is responsible for one of the hardest images in the history of football. You may be familiar . . .

Harry How/Getty Images

That photo was snapped on January 10, 2015, when the Panthers visited the Seattle Seahawks for a Divisional Round playoff matchup. And Newton, in a recent episode of 4th & 1 with Cam Newton, explained that the staredown didn’t just happen in Seattle—it was actually a pre-game ritual for every road game . . .

(Warning: Explicit language)

Unfortunately for Carolina, one python bit much harder than the other on that particular night.

After completing an improbable run to their second consecutive NFC South title and a Wild Card round triumph over the Arizona Cardinals, the Panthers tried their hand at knocking off the mighty Seahawks. But the “Legion of Boom” boomed.

Newton was picked off twice, once by First-team All-Pro cornerback Richard Sherman and once by Second-team All-Pro safety Kam Chancellor—who returned his for a 90-yard touchdown. Seattle took the win, 31-17, and ended up representing the NFC in Super Bowl XLIX.

5 biggest plays from Super Bowl XLVIII

5 biggest plays from Super Bowl XLVIII

Friday marked the 10th anniversary of the Seattle Seahawks’ triumph in Super Bowl XLVIII – the first championship in team history. Although this anniversary feels a bit different knowing it is the first one without Pete Carroll as the head coach, it is still more than worth remembering the glory.

As we kick off the week leading up to the next Super Bowl ending in an VIII, why not go back and look at the best plays from the last one?

There is no doubt these are burned into the collective memory of the 12th Man. It was hard to narrow it down to only five, as practically the entire game is one big highlight reel for the Legion of Boom.

But for a more trimmed down highlight reel, let us watch the top 5 plays from the greatest moment in Seahawks history.

Kam Chancellor approves of the way Quandre Diggs is playing

Bam Bam would know, as he played the position as physically as anybody has since Sean Taylor.

Seahawks free safety Quandre Diggs is one of the best in the league at his position. Coming into the 2023 season, Doug Farrar at Touchdown Wire had him ranked second at his position, trailing only Steelers star Minkah Fitzpatrick. However, some analysts are not fans of what Diggs has done this far this year. In fact, Pro Football Focus has Diggs graded out as the second-worst safety in the league right now – sandwiched between teammates Julian Love and Coby Bryant.

Clearly PFF is penalizing all three of them for something the team is doing schematically, but that’s a story for another day. One guy who does approve of the way Diggs is playing – and whose opinion we value a whole lot more than PFF’s – is Seahawks legendary strong safety Kam Chancellor. He shared a highlight from Diggs on Twitter yesterday, saying Diggs is playing the game the way it’s supposed to be played.

Bam Bam would know, as he played the position as physically as anybody has since Sean Taylor. While there were a few lean years between the time of Chancellor and Earl Thomas and this current group, the Seahawks have enjoyed a rare run at this position. In fact, with the exception of the tail-end of Ed Reed’s career, no team has enjoyed better play at safety during the Pete Carroll era than Seattle.

Seahawks great Kam Chancellor among 129 Hall of Fame nominees for 2023

The Pro Football Hall of Fame has announced 129 modern-era nominees for the class of 2023.

The Pro Football Hall of Fame has announced 129 modern-era nominees for the class of 2023. That list will be cut down to 25 in November and the final list of 15 will be revealed in January.

Seahawks greats Shaun Alexander and Kam Chancellor are among the names. Here’s the full list by position.

Richard Sherman and Kam Chancellor both condemned Seahawks’ trick play call

The decision was universally condemned, including by a couple of Seahawks legends.

There are few things more frustrating in sports than poor coaching decisions getting in the way of a win. Despite the lopsided final score, the Seattle Seahawks had their chances to make Sunday’s 20-point loss to the San Francisco 49ers a competitive game.

One of the most frustrating wasted opportunities came in the second quarter when Seattle had their most promising offensive drive going. After a pass from quarterback Geno Smith put them at San Francisco’s eight yard line, the Seahawks could have made it a one possession game with a touchdown. Rather than trust Smith to make another play, for some reason offensive coordinator Shane Waldron took the ball out of his hands and called on No. 4 running back DeeJay Dallas to pass. The inexplicable trick play ended in an interception.

That decision has been universally condemned, including by a couple of Seahawks legends: Richard Sherman and Kam Chancellor.

Waldron has had a few strong games here and there but at best he’s been inconsistent when it comes to decision-making. Few teams have enough talent to overcome poor playcalling, and these Seahawks are definitely not one of them.

Seahawks have had 2 of the top 10 draft classes since 2006, says PFF

The Seattle Seahawks nearly built a dynasty in the early years of the Pete Carroll and John Schneider era.

The Seattle Seahawks nearly built a dynasty in the early years of the Pete Carroll and John Schneider era. A lot of factors went into the greatness of the peak Legion of Boom teams. The most important one was the organization’s ability to navigate the NFL draft far better than their 31 competitors.

Seattle’s first draft under Carroll and Schneider built the foundation for those teams. The 2010 class netted Earl Thomas, Russell Okung, Golden Tate and Kam Chancellor. Two years later the team struck gold again, getting Russell Wilson, Bobby Wagner and Bruce Irvin. According to Pro Football Focus, those two classes are among the top 10 overall since 2006.

New Orleans’ 2017 class is undeniably special, but in our opinion Seattle’s 2012 group should be No. 1.

Sadly, all the players from these two great classes are gone. Schneider and Carroll will have to make lightning strike twice in order to build another championship contender.

Quandre Diggs explains how new Seahawks defense will help him and Jamal Adams

The Seahawks have been blessed with two sensational starting safety combos during the Pete Carroll era.

The Seahawks have been blessed with two sensational starting safety combos during the Pete Carroll era. It’ll be a long time before any team matches the might of prime Earl Thomas and Kam Chancellor, but today’s iteration of Quandre Diggs and Jamal Adams is no pushover. Having those two patrol the back end of a fresh and different defensive scheme is one of many reasons for fans to feel hopeful about this unit in 2022.

Here’s Diggs describing how the new defense will help both him and Adams, per Brady Henderson at ESPN.

“I think it’s going to help both of us… I think guys can’t automatically tag [Adams] and say he’s in the box and he’s blitzing and slide his way. I’ve always learned from the different quarterbacks that I play with. They always watch the backside safety. And now with the backside safety just showing something different or kind of sitting there … you don’t know what we are in. You don’t know what checks we have. So I think that’s going to be dope.”

Adams also gave his stamp of approval, saying both he and Diggs are really excited to be a part of the change.

Diggs and Adams are both recovering from major injuries suffered late last season. Diggs broke his fibula and sprained his ankle in the final quarter of the last game of the year, while Adams missed the final month with yet another shoulder injury. Both are expected to be back to 100% by training camp.

Kam Chancellor interested in buying Seahawks: ‘Let’s make some history’

However, it seems that a certain former Seahawk wishes to be involved in the process.

Speculation over the future of the Seattle Seahawks has been rife in recent weeks and not just in regards to the product on the field.

With reports floating around that the team could be sold, a few potential buyers could be in the market. However, it seems that a certain former Seahawk wishes to be involved in the process.

Kam Chancellor is one of the most beloved players in franchise history and one of the greatest strong safeties to ever lace them up. However, the idea of him currently being the sole owner of an NFL team is a pipe dream because he is not a billionaire, even though he has no financial concerns and will not for a long time, having made tens of millions as a player with the Seahawks.

It would be intriguing to see Chancellor involved in team operations in some capacity and it is pleasing to see that he cares about the organization’s long-term stability and is willing to put himself in a position to achieve it.

The future of team ownership is up in the air for now and things could be settled very soon, so we will just have to wait and see.
