How did Rutgers 2024 recruit Kaj Sanders do in his week one matchup against Red Bank Catholic?

How did Rutgers four-star recruit Kaj Sanders perform in Bergen Catholic’s week one 24-6 victory over Red Bank Catholic?

Rutgers football: After Kaj Sanders committed, where does the 2024 class stand now?

Rutgers is in a solid spot in the team rankings for recruiting from Rivals and 247Sports.

After a busy June on the recruiting front, Rutgers football continued their momentum this past weekend by securing the commitment of Kaj Sanders. A four-star from Bergen Catholic, Sanders is the highest ranked commit from New Jersey in this 2024 recruiting class for Rutgers.

And with the commitment of Sanders, the Scarlet Knights’ class looks a whole lot prettier.

Rivals has Rutgers as No. 25 in the nation with two players ranked as four stars. Those two players, Long Island wide receiver/tight end K.J. Duff and Sanders, both committed in the last two weeks to help lift the class.

According to 247Sports, Rutgers is now at No. 32 in the nation. The vaunted 2022 class, the highest ranked since Schiano returned, finished as No. 33 in the nation.

Gabriel Winowich, a four-star, is the highest ranked commit in the class per 247Sports’ evaluation.

Also with two players ranked as four star recruits (Winowich and Sanders), On3 has this Rutgers class as No. 37 in the nation.

What does this mean for Rutgers? Well, adding Sanders and Duff in consecutive weeks is no doubt recruiting momentum. It makes for nice headlines and positive press, but it also creates intrigue in this class and moving forward.

[lawrence-related id=28299]

Blue chip players want to play with other standout players. They want to win. So adding Sanders and Duff is improtant for Rutgers if they want to create a groundswell and attract other high-end recruits.

As far as the star ratings, keep in mind that head coach Greg Schiano has been adamant about this being a developmental program and that he is after the best fit, not the stars. But there is no denying that the best programs in the Big Ten attract the most stars.

So for Rutgers to land two coveted players over the past two weeks is a sign that the tide might be turning for Rutgers.

Film Review: Rutgers landed four-star defensive back Kaj Sanders

Rutgers added four-star recruit Kaj Sanders to their 2024 roster, making him the highest-rated commit for Greg Schiano in the Class of 2024.

Rutgers football added four-star prospect Kaj Sanders to their 2024 roster last weekend, making him the highest-rated commit for Greg Schiano in the Class of 2024. The New Jersey native from Bergen Catholic (Oradell, New Jersey) elected to stay home, choosing Rutgers over North Carolina, South Carolina, and Wisconsin.

The 6-foot-1 defensive back helped the Crusaders win back-to-back state titles, recording 40 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, three interceptions, and six pass deflections in his junior season. During his sophomore and junior season, Sanders was a two-way player, logging 32 rushes for 261 yards on 8.2 yards per carry and three touchdowns.

According to Rivals, Sanders is a top five player in the state and the No. 30 safety in the nation.

Film Breakdown

Below are Sanders’s athletic stats according to Hudl.com
40 Yard Dash Bench Press 185 LBS Bench Press (Reps) Squats (lbs)
4.5 Seconds 250 lbs 17 375 lbs

Watching his junior season highlights, you can see Sanders plays with elite speed and athleticism. He has excellent ball instincts and will be the perfect piece for Rutgers defensive coordinator Joe Harasymiak

Harasymiak can have Sanders play the rover position as a defensive back, with the ability to roam freely in the middle of the field. He can bait opposing quarterbacks into poor decisions while rolling down to linebacker depth to support the run defense. Harasymiak can create pressure packages on third downs, trying to have Sanders play havoc in the secondary.

[lawrence-related id=28245]

Sanders’s ability to rally to the football and quick decision-making will allow him to shoot up the depth chart when he reports to campus in 2024. His strength and physicality will be a solid addition to the Scarlet Knights’ defense.

The commitment of Sanders allows Harasymiak and Schiano to move their defensive scheme from a 4-3 to a 3-4, or 3-3-5, showing off Sanders’s coverage skills. Moving to a 3-4 or 3-3-5 would mean more 1-on-1 situations for opposing offenses, allowing Sanders to roam in Rutgers’ secondary.

Rutgers football’s four-stars react to Kaj Sanders committing

Two of the four-star commits to Rutgers football react to the addition of Kaj Sanders.

On Saturday afternoon, Rutgers football received a bigtime commitment from Kaj Sanders. The four-star safety is one of New Jersey’s top players and his announcement for Rutgers is huge for the program’s rebuild.

What the addition of Sanders does is bolster a class that already was very solid. Rutgers now has four players ranked as a four-star by one of the major recruiting services (Rivals, 247Sports, ESPN and On3).

Bringing in Sanders was greeted by one of those four-star commits, Isaiah Crumpler. A wide receiver out of North Carolina, Crumpler is a four-star according to On3.

“I love seeing Kaj Sanders commit to Rutgers, especially with all the talent we got already,” Crumpler said.

“It makes it even more exciting for the upcoming season for the 2024 class for Rutgers.

“It should let all colleges know that Rutgers is coming for every team. We are going to be back where we started, Kings of the Jungle.”

In January, Rutgers received a commitment from Gabriel Winowich. The four-star running back from Michigan was the second player to commit to the class.

[lawrence-related id=28272]

He is a four-star according to 247Sports and ESPN.

He too was excited about seeing Sanders, a top five player in New Jersey, join this Rutgers class.

“Well it’s obviously a huge get and any time you’re getting a stud like Kaj it’s a huge boost. Kaj is the type of player that is going to be a difference maker on Day 1 on the field but also the locker room,” Winowich said.

“And I know how fired up I am to be able to play alongside him for years to come not to mention the rest of this 24’ group.”

In late June, Rutgers landed a verbal from four-star tight end/wide receiver K.J. Duff. The Long Island prospect is ranked the top player in New York according to Rivals.

Kaj Sanders wants to help Rutgers attract other four stars: ‘I know I can make a big difference’

Kaj Sanders said that he is hoping to attract other top players from New Jersey.

Rutgers football didn’t just land a top player on Saturday in Kaj Sanders. They also received a commitment from a player who is all-in and is fully invested in the direction of the program’s rebuild under head coach Greg Schiano.

So much so that Sanders, part of the 2024 class, wants to play the role of recruiter in Rutgers attracting other top players from the Big North.

Sanders can say that because he is one of those talented players. A four-star recruit according to Rivals as well as at On3, Sanders is a top five player in New Jersey. He plays for New Jersey’s premier prep football program in Bergen Catholic (recently ranked top 25 in the nation by MaxPreps). As such, he is the prototypical player that Rutgers would like to begin landing.

And the kind of player coming out of the uber-talented Big North that they’ve struggled to get in recent years. Rutgers hasn’t found much success in recruiting the Big North.

That could all change now and Sanders plans on leading the way for New Jersey’s other top recruits.

With a final four of North CarolinaRutgers, South Carolina and Wisconsin, Sanders certainly wasn’t short of good options or strong Power Five programs.

[lawrence-related id=28217]

And now, he says, he hopes to be a leader of this class and help keep other top New Jersey in-state.

“I definitely do because I have a great relationship with a lot of other kids in New Jersey,” Sanders told Rutgers Wire.

“I know I can make a big difference, a buzz being a Big North player and someone who was getting a lot of attention and offers.”

Rutgers has struggled with recruiting the four-star talent from the Big North, a conference that is among the deepest and most talented in the nation. Being able to get a player like Sanders signals the shift of momentum on the recruiting front for Rutgers.

This could be the type of commitment that could resonate with the top players in this recruiting class but also next year. Sanders is a name among New Jersey’s top recruits.

His belief in the program can and should open some eyes for Rutgers among New Jersey’s top players.

[lawrence-related id=28247]

And Sanders, for his part, is ready to not just lend his name but also his efforts to help bring top players from the Big North to Rutgers. He plans on making a call to one of the state’s top players to join him.

“Definitely going to be making one to Yasin Willis. That’ll definitely be my first call. Be and him used to play together. I know how he feels about Rutgers and it’d be great if he joined what we’re building here,” Sanders said.

“I’m really excited about this because I believe Rutgers is heading in the right direction and our class can be the one to take them there.”

Willis took an official visit to Rutgers in June. He is a four-star recruit and the top-ranked player in New Jersey according to Rivals.

He’s staying home: Why did Kaj Sanders end up picking Rutgers football?

Kaj Sanders discusses why he made the move and committed to Rutgers football.

Kaj Sanders was a massive pickup for Rutgers football, the four-star safety from New Jersey announcing on Saturday.

And in landing a coveted national recruit from Bergen Catholic, one of the top high school programs in the country, Rutgers certainly opened some eyes. Sanders is an elite recruit, a talent who likely sees the field as a true freshman.

Ranked a top five player in New Jersey’s 2024 class, Sanders was recently madea four-star by Rivals. He is also a four-star at On3.

With a final four of North CarolinaRutgers, South Carolina and Wisconsin, Rutgers beat some strong Power Five programs to land Sanders. Rutgers won out, because he connected with the coaching staff and he believes in head coach [autotag]Greg Schiano.[/autotag]

“I ended up going that way because of my relationship with the coaches and that the program will turn around,” Sanders told Rutgers Wire.

“I’m convinced of coach Schiano’s history and his culture and how it’s going to be in the next few years and how things are going to grow there.”

In late June, Sanders took an official visit to Rutgers. It was a midweek visit, one that would change the direction and trajectory of his recruitment.

And, it led to his commitment this weekend.

“The official visit turned things around. It opened my eyes to the sources around Rutgers,” Sanders said.

“Like companies and people – the NIL part of it. I saw that they had a lot to offer.”

Sanders made his announcement on Saturday afternoon on the Rivals platform. He is excited about his commitment but also relieved to have the process over.

Understandably so, there seems to have been a certain level of pressure that Sanders felt throughout this process that makes Saturday’s commitment a relief.

“It was stressful. All the big-time schools and all the great coaches who have called and talked to me,” Sanders said.

“I’m glad it is done, glad to get back to being able to focus on my senior season and get back to grinding this offseason.

“I’m 100 percent committed.”

Twitter reacts to four-star Kaj Sanders committing to Rutgers football

A look at how Twitter reacted to Rutgers football snagging a commitment from Kaj Sanders.

There was plenty of celebrating on social media this Saturday afternoon among Rutgers football fans with the commitment of Kaj Sanders. A blue chip recruit, Sanders was a highly coveted recruit that Rutgers managed to pull from one of the top programs in the nation.

Sanders isn’t just an ordinary recruit for Rutgers to nab. He is the top-ranked player in what is a very strong recruiting class for the Big Ten program.

Ranked a four-star defensive back by Rivals and per On3. Sanders is a class of 2024 athlete from Bergen Catholic (Oradell, N.J.). He is a top-five player in the state.

Four-star Kaj Sanders picked Rutgers football…what does this mean for the Scarlet Knights?

Four-star Kaj Sanders could make a monster commitment to Rutgers on Saturday.

On Saturday afternoon, Kaj Sanders announced a commitment to Rutgers football. It is a decision that could help transition the program on the field and with recruiting.

A four-star defensive back from Bergen Catholic (Oradell, N.J.), Sanders is a top five player in the state. He also was recently bumped to being a four-star by Rivals; he is also a four-star per On3.

He picked on Saturday from a final four that includes North CarolinaRutgers, South Carolina and Wisconsin.

In his commitment to Rutgers, he becomes the fourth recruit to verbal to Rutgers who is ranked a four-star. In many ways, the potential of his commitment to the Scarlet Knights has the chance toresonate throughout New Jersey beyond just the typical headlines.

Playing for a national powerhouse in Bergen Catholic that is ranked in the top 25 nationally, Sanders is not an ordinary recruit. He is a coveted player and one with name recognition throughout New Jersey. As such, in picking Rutgers, he can now help usher in a new era for the program.

When head coach [autotag]Greg Schiano[/autotag] left Rutgers in 2012, ending the most successful era in program history, the pipeline that he had painstakingly created to the North Jersey parochials began to wither. It didn’t die entirely, but, Rutgers lost its momentum with the likes of Don Bosco Prep, St. Peter’s Prep and Bergen Catholic among others.

It has taken time to get back in with these programs. But landing a four-star player from one of these elite schools would certainly land Rutgers back in the game for some of  New Jersey’s top talent.

[lawrence-related id=28217]

Sanders, one of the state’s top players, is a star for one of these Big North programs. This commitment on Saturday afternoon signals a shifting of the winds for Rutgers on the recruiting front moving forward. It is important for Rutgers to land recruits from these programs if they want to be competitive in the Big Ten.

Not only does the addition of Sanders help solidify a very solid class of 2024 for Rutgers, but Sanders could be the pied piper for next year’s class. His name has clout and his belief in Rutgers would be seismic.

This is not hyperbole, not by any stretch. The class of 2025 is a deep and talented one in New Jersey. Having Sanders leading this current class will certainly get the attention of underclassmen throughout the region. It could…and should… be a big moment for Rutgers to say the least.

[lawrence-related id=28212]

This decision must be viewed as one made by Sanders in his best interest. Sanders could and should make a decision based purely on his own comfort level with the program that feels most like home, the one that resonates the most with him and where he can develop on the field as well as off of it.

He has said that is Rutgers. But the impact goes far beyond his skillset and his potential impact on the field. Sanders is now a leader of not just this class, but in many ways is now a leader of the Rutgers program.

This is a commitment that certainly carries weight. The stars would not necessarily be aligning for the Scarlet Knights, but in Sanders making his pledge, it shows a belief from a blue chip, national recruit in this rebuilding program at Rutgers and in Schiano in particular.

Buckle up.

2024 four-star safety with Wisconsin in final four commits to a Big Ten rival

Another top target commits elsewhere:

It has been a day of some of Wisconsin’s high-profile targets in the class of 2024 committing elsewhere. The first was defensive lineman Benedict Umeh, a top-100 recruit that committed to Stanford earlier this afternoon.

The second occurred moments ago, as four-star safety Kaj Sanders announced his commitment to Rutgers.

Related: Wisconsin’s class of 2024 continues to rise after its latest commitment

Wisconsin was a finalist for Sanders alongside the Scarlet Knights, North Carolina and South Carolina. The Oradell, New Jersey native had several 247Sports crystal ball predictions from the last week naming Rutgers as the clear favorite.

Sanders is ranked by 247Sports as the No. 388 player in the class of 2024, the No. 35 safety and the No. 6 recruit from his home state of New Jersey.

Wisconsin’s class of 2024 currently ranks No. 21 nationally after landing four-star running back Darrion Dupree earlier this week. Luke Fickell and company will now turn focus to the remaining targets on the board as the cycle continues.

Breaking: Rutgers football lands four-star recruit Kaj Sanders

Four-star Kaj Sanders commits to Rutgers football.

Kaj Sanders committed to Rutgers football on Saturday afternoon. In doing so, he joins K.J. Duff as two commitments from four-star players in the past week.

The Rutgers football recruiting class now stands at 21 commitments with four players ranked as four-stars.

A four-star recruit according to On3 and Rivals, Sanders is one of New Jersey’s top players in the 2024 recruiting. He is a safety at powerhouse program Bergen Catholic (Oradell, N.J.) and is a consensus top-10 player in the state.

His commitment announcement was carried live by Rivals. He picked from a final four of North CarolinaRutgers, South Carolina and Wisconsin.

“They’ve been recruiting me since I was a freshman, sophomore. They’ve been on me,” Sanders said during his announcement. “I had to put them in.”

The commitment is huge for Rutgers in that it gives the Scarlet Knights a top-tier player from New Jersey’s premier prep football program. Bergen Catholic is ranked No. 24 in the nation by MaxPreps.

It also shows a significant flex of muscle by Rutgers to pull in a player from the Big North Non-Public, which is largely considered the top conference in the state.

[lawrence-related id=28221,28217]

Sanders took an official visit to Rutgers in late June. This week, he said that during that visit, the Scarlet Knights made a move in his recruitment.

Apparently, it was a move all the way to the top.

“Things went really well on my visit. They made a big move in my recruitment,” Sanders told Rutgers Wire this week.

“They made that move because of all the love they’ve been showing me on my official.”
